Local diner with great food, great people and a hot cup of joe! Went with a friend who lives in the area and has been talking about it for a while now. We did the lakes early to stem the tide of the damage she knew we were going to do. I got a breakfast sandwich on texas toast– they have a big version on the menu but will do a small one if asked– and they were super nice about it. The fruit cup really did it for me… $ 2.95 for a really nice medley of strawberry, pineapple, blueberry and kiwi. Coffee was simple– just coffee. Very good. My friend got a pancake, which she graciously let me try– Did not need any syrup! That is high praise when it comes to pancakery! The décor is interesting and pop-y. We sat at the Starwars table because… c’mon, star wars. Last bit– we met one of the owners who was working Saturday morning and she could not have been nicer. Bottom line– this is a wonderful local business to support. big squishy hearts for them.

This is a nice new café in mid-city. I liked the location and the fact that I’m always up for a new breakfast spot in Baton Rouge. However, there were a few drawbacks. Overall it was just ok, I would possibly go back because of the convenience. Let’s start with the setup and service. It was a little confusing when I first walked in. There’s a huge menu hanging but it could lead to a real neck ache. There were employees all over; yet, I had to seek one out to find out if we order from the counter or if a server would come to our table. She informed us to go to the counter. She was very short with her answered and we never got a hello or good morning. That’s disheartening for a nice neighborhood spot. The menu is simple. You order and sit. They will bring you your food but you’re responsible for your utensils and everything else. I’m ok with that, but it should be explained to newcomers. The food was overall ok. There was a sweet undertone to everything. My husband and I both had pancakes which were very sweet. Too sweet to finish. They were also dense. I also had grits, eggs, and bacon. Those were all good. The grits were creamy which I love, but sweet as well. They had river road coffee which was good. Overall just an ok experience. It was quiet and represented BR culture well. I’d go back because of that.

Made a shrimp and grits lover out of me. So very happy to have a breakfast venue in mid-city. Great food, nice owners; only thing missing – mimosas.

Not fancy coffee, but the brew was good. I live around the corner, so I’ll be back. I wish they would expand the menu a bit, perhaps adding more types of milk. Non-dairy options are essential these days. The staff was sweet and the service was fast.

We love Simple Joe! We have lived in Mid-City for over 6 years and are so excited to see new, locally-owned businesses popping up in the area. The food is delicious without being overdone. The pancakes are always fluffy and you can add blueberries, strawberries, or chocolate chips to them! They also have the BEST grits! I have never been a fan of grits, but Joe’s grits are so creamy that even I crave them! The only critique I have is that it usually seems that one side of pancake is burnt, but other than that… HUGEFAN! Not bad enough to stop us from supporting this small business! Keep up the good work and support local!

This is a fairly new restaurant in my neighborhood. I’ve heard good things, so my son and I decided to check it out. The atmosphere was warm, clean, and well lit. I had a traditional breakfast — eggs, sausage, toast, and grits. It was very good. My son had a smoked sausage omelet that he loved. They offer breakfast and lunch specials everyday. The prices are reasonable. We are very excited about Simple Joes. You should check it out.

I hate to use superlatives but Simple Joe has what I consider the«BEST» breakfast combination, which is two eggs, bacon and one pancake. Not too much, but enough to stick with you. By the way, pancakes are easy to mess up. Either the grill is too hot or not hot enough and the cakes don’t get cooked evenly all the way through. Simple Joe’s pancakes are done right. Louie’s could take some lessons from these folks. We also had the bagels and lox as well. This dish was good but I think I will order it next time on a plain bagel, plain cream cheese and a little onion. I think you would be able savor the subtle flavors of the dish on my next visit. The last thing I have to say is that the service was just right. Efficient without rush. That is a lot harder than it sounds. Simple Joe is in the top 5 of Baton Rouge breakfast spot. I’ll be back.

I was in Baton Rouge early this morning to take a state civil service test. As I was leaving the testing site, I pulled up Unilocal, and of the breakfast options that popped up, this came up as being new and upcoming(or something to that affect), and I decided to take a chance. I am glad I did. I can’t remember what time mid-morning I showed up, but there was only one other customer. The employees were discussing what was needed for ingredients, and they were in a flurry working and cleaning, taking phone-in orders. I had my braces adjusted yesterday, so I was hungry but my mouth hurt. I asked if I could have the loaded biscuit(eggs, cheese, meat of your choice on a biscuit) separated, as I wanted it, but didn’t trust my mouth to open, and the waitress happily obliged. Everything was just great. I liked how busy the employees kept working and cleaning. I was facing the counter to eat(while I was at a table) and the fudge kept yelling my name, so I had to get a piece to go, and I am so glad I did. The tables in the dining area are all individually decorated, and everything was absolutely neat and clean and very open. If I am ever in the area, I look forward to this little hole in the wall that was full of goodness.

Sometimes you eat out because you want food without a) cooking or b) cleanup. Could I make french toast, or pancakes, or an egg sandwich and french press my coffee with staples in my kitchen for«a fraction of the cost»? Yes(thankfully). The owner(s) of Simple Joe know that they need to charge more to turn a profit; from my own experience, word of mouth, and the reviews on Unilocal so far, it seems they’ve justified that by delivering tasty food. Service was great; we were greeted right as we came in and whoever greeted us made us feel welcome right away. Our table was bussed a bit prematurely, especially since there was no rush or need to turn tables over. Definitely should encourage staff to be mindful of the situation before unnecessarily pulling plates off tables. Still, won’t rate lower for attentive staff doing their job. The uncomplicated menu, as another reviewer noted, is a breath of fresh air, and its execution, as far as I can tell, is spot on. As the place(hopefully) continues to succeed, I would welcome some additions, but you build on a solid foundation, and this is definitely a solid foundation. Simple Joe wins for doing the one thing that far too many of the city’s restaurants fail to do: provide quality, reasonably-priced food, and do it in a timely fashion. Now, if they just opened up again at midnight for that Radio Bar crowd…

I’m always excited to see(and happy to support) a new restaurant on Government Street, where so many places have announced intentions to open over the past year yet so few have materialized(where art thou, Twine, Chicory Coffee, and Gouter?). Simple Joe is located in the same plaza as Radio Bar, so it’s convenient for those who are dropping off kids at B.R. High or heading downtown to work, as well as for surrounding neighborhoods. Another thing about Simple Joe — it is indeed simple. No blueberry-thyme crepes or Chilean seabass omelets here; just the essentials like pancakes, biscuits, eggs, smoked and cured pork products, grits, etc. A non-chain restaurant where you can order food and reasonably know what to expect? What a concept! I ordered a biscuit with sausage, egg, and cheese. They made it. I ate it. It tasted good. All transactions in life should be this… what’s the word? The people are friendly. The place is bright, clean, and quiet. The coffee is outrageous. Oh wait, yes, the coffee. Again, this coffee is simple(SIMPLEJOE, GETIT? HAHAHAHAHAHA). Good, but simple, and provided by Baton Rouge’s River Road Coffees(who I have long thought of as the Tin Roof Brewing of coffee — they are great at making money being utterly unadventurous). Simple Joe sees fit to charge $ 4.00 for a 16oz. cup of it. No, it’s not an on-demand pourover. Yes, it’s brewed coffee poured from a thermal carafe. No, you don’t know how long it’s been there. Yes, it’s impolite to ask. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing explicitly wrong with the coffee(it tastes just fine), but it seems ludicrous to me for the namesake of the business to be so insultingly priced and simultaneously so ordinary. One thing or the other needs to improve for this to enter the rotation of regular spots. So, to summarize, please support this local business, but at this point, seriously consider BYOTFOCYMAHFAFOTP(bring your own Thermos full of coffee you made at home for a fraction of the price).

Support your local caffeine distributor! Simple Joe is brand new and still working out some kinks but they’re well on their way to becoming a staple of Ogden Park and Mid City. Try the Sumatra blend(I think that’s what it’s called). River Road Coffee is roasting it just for them and it’s deeeeee-lish. I’m not a big coffee drinker but I thoroughly enjoy this cup of java. Joe is also serving up breakfast items to order and also has some pre-made(made in-house, of course) bites for the customer on the run. So. What are you waiting for? Come on in, take a seat and indulge in some fine coffee and a tasty bite. I live next door(no, not @ Radio Bar although some may beg to differ), so give me a shout and I’ll come share a cup with ya.

Simple Joe is exactly as advertised… simple. But it’s simplicity is its charm. This place will quickly become a neighborhood hotspot. The atmosphere is hip, filled with unique tables that are all themed. The prices are reasonable and the portion sizes are perfect. You will clean your plate, but will not feel like a pig after. The only thing I’d like would be free refills on the coffee, so make sure to get a large.
