My Wife met her Cousin there today for lunch. The young man who served them was the sort who pesters you up front to order and they told him twice that they weren’t ready. The next time he asked, they had made their choices and ordered. Near the end of their meal, he came by with the perfunctory, «Did you save room for dessert?». Neither was in the mood so they told him no. As they talked, he came by and asked them if that was all. Then he brought the tab. They were still talking when he came by and suggested that they depart because it was going to be busy and they needed the table space. They settled the bill and remained talking. My Wife, who has been a waitress in her life, watched the entrance and saw NO new customers entering so she figured they were okay to remain and talk. A bit later, the server returned and said he checked with management and they told him they had a, «NOLOITERINGPOLICY». Honest. This is what he told them and that they must leave. No new diners had entered while all this was happening. My Wife refuses to complain about things like this so I’m reviewing the experience for her. Eating at the Yum Yum would be Dum-Dum.

When Bert and his wife owned this restaurant it was a great place to go. We went on weekly basis for years. Since it was sold to current young inexperienced owners-it has gone down hill. The place is not kept clean and torn ragged material on chairs. The food has gone to lower quality. The service is always slow. We used to come here for their great homemade chili and now it tastes like it is a week old and has been stirred so many times the hamburger is like sand. Also loved Bert’s homemade apple pie.-past year– everytime we come for the pie– they never have it. Then last time we came last week– we ordered the apple pie and got a bait and switch. It was a few microwaved apples inside a half cut tart pastry. Tasted horrible. We will no longer be going here.-the good old yum yum days are no longer!!!

Note: I give 3 stars for«average good». It does not mean«poor». I hadn’t been here in a couple of years, came with a friend intending to get an ice cream treat while doing errands in Brighton. My companion wanted lunch, so we sat down. There were some new items on the menu since my last visit; also they now serve Kemp’s ice cream, a creamier brand than the Hershey’s I remember from past visits. My only complaint is that tubs of several flavors were empty, which looked bad and limited the choices. Happy surprise! I wasn’t expecting too much, but things have improved since the last time I visited. My black bean burger was delicious and had texture, because the patty was homemade from cooked & seasoned black beans. Both patty and sauce were tasty, and — hurrah! — the bun had enough structure to hold the burger and sauce without disintegrating.(More burger places should use good buns like this.) French fries were cut from actual potato, and freshly made. My companion’s chicken wrap sandwich was very good. We each selected scoops of plain ice cream for dessert and really enjoyed the great flavors. Service was friendly and polite. We will return.

Great desserts but that is all I would get. I think the food is disgusting. Old produce and over priced. I got a salad and it looked premade and a few days old, yuck. Kids love it here because of the train going by in the ceiling. I’ll repeat, only get dessert :)

This review is only for the ice cream. This hole in the wall, cute ice cream place has big scoops! Great ice cream flavors that we got to go. There’s a decent selection with other desserts like floats and shakes that we want to try next time!

WEWILLNOTRETURN!!! We arrived with my 10 year old daughter for ice cream on Saturday night slightly before the YumYum Tree closed. We asked the nice gentleman behind the counter if they were open and he replied«for a few more minutes». He gave us our ice cream and told us we were fine to sit at a table as they were not going to kick us out anytime soon because they had to clean the restaurant. We sat at a booth for less than three minutes when a women came out from the back and said«excuse me but you’re going to have to leave because we are closed. We were nice enough to serve you at close as we allowed you to squeak in but we are closed.» She repeated the request for us to leave twice. My boyfriend had ice ream in a throw away container that was leaking all over the table and floor as he grabbed it to take it outside. I was shocked at such rude behavior and unfriendly service with this woman. Both the rudeness of that woman and the waitress who was working the floor who wouldn’t speak to us when we said hi was appalling. My boyfriend is not from Brighton, he’s from Ann Arbor and said«well, I think they’re unhappy and the place looks like it’s on its last leg and I bet they’ll close up for good within 3 – 6 months. Did you see how filthy that place is. Everyone appeared miserable and I’m sure they know something we don’t». Nice first impression! WEWILLNOTRETURN!!!

This place has become an easy go-to for breakfast for me. I have only been for breakfast, although there is a large ice cream counter on your left when you enter. I can’t comment for anything but their breakfast food and service. Most of the time, the service is decent. There definitely are slow days, and some days are fast. It all seems to center on whether or not the owner is there. Most days are fine, however. Yes, there are times when it’s abysmally slow, but it also seems to be during the times when they’re fairly busy. Perhaps the staff needs better training on managing heavy times? The food is great, though. It’s definitely very homey and nothing that’s fancy at all. They focus on the traditional breakfast fare, and being a fan of potatoes and eggs — that’s what I almost always get. The hashbrowns are frozen, but are cooked well and aren’t the same caliber of frozen hashbrowns from crappy coney islands — they’re better. The veggies are fresh and always have their nice crispness. The eggs are generally cooked well, and I love the touch of being able to get an english muffin with your order instead of toast. The prices are cheaper because the portions are a bit smaller than a coney island. I prefer this because no one ever needs to eat that much, and the food is a tick higher than a coney. So it makes up for it. The coffee is decent and you get your option of the flavored creamers, too. Another little plus. The train is kitschy and is obviously for the kids — the same with the music. The same movie track from disney movies of yore(nothing in the last 10 years) plays on persistent repeat. I’d pay them for better(or no) music. Thankfully, it’s quiet enough to ignore. This is obviously a family spot with the music and train, but I enjoy that it’s quiet and unfrequented enough that I can enjoy a book over breakfast without issue, too. I plan on returning often for some good eats at decent prices. Just don’t be in a hurry.

LOVE the desserts. There’s so many options, all of them amazing. It’s a real homey kind of place, not too big, with the same few servers so there’s always a friendly face. The food selection is good, nothing to die for but delicious nonetheless. Panini’s are good, and so is their pot pie.

Meh, cold soup and dry grilled cheese sandwiches obviously made with sub par processed cheese. So much for the more«gourmet» cheeses like fontina, brie and gouda. I’ve had better. Still, it’s a local«landmark» of sorts, so everyone goes there. I’ve only eaten here several times because I worked in Livingston County, so it was a relatively optimal lunch spot for me based almost entirely on its location. It’s inexpensive and the staff is friendly, if not a little slow. They’ve been known for years as the«place with the choo choo train,» so there’s that bit of nostalgia that remains with the place after all these years. I guess it’s why people have been flocking here for years and it’s what kept people coming back. It certainly isn’t the food– or the oft-slow service. While the servers are nice, they’re often a little distracted and don’t appear terribly concerned that you might be late getting back to the office or wherever it is that you need to be. Beware: when you dine at the Yum Yum Tree, you just might be on their time, not yours! The food is pretty basic in terms of offerings and rather bland with lots of pre-packed ingredients, probably to suit the average person’s palette. The«made from scratch» soups are okay, but they don’t taste homemade and the sandwiches are pretty standard fare– i. e decent, albeit occasionally served on dried out bread. Ouch! One bright spot is their stand-out ice cream– now that is good! Now that’s something to come back for time and again.

We thought the breakfast was pretty decent. Way better than all of the typical chain and coney islands that many like to frequent. Friendly and quick service.

Not like they used to be. The ice cream is really good but the food not so much. The best part about being there is the train that Goes around on a track above you

This place is a study in laziness and apathy. We’ve visited this place about a half dozen times in the last several months. Each time has featured one or more significant disappointments. In no particular order: –Cleanliness: Silverware isn’t washed very well. Menus are old, cruddy, and gross. Makes you want to not touch anything, much less eat. –Service: Is reliably slow. 35 minutes to sit down, order, and receive a simple dessert is too long, even for good food– which this isn’t. –Food: Generic. Everything might as well have come from a trip to GFS. –Reliability: Ridiculous. After you’ve waited for too long to be sat in your not entirely clean booth, your unhappy sever will be along to tell you what they’re out of. Strap in– it’s a long list. Did you want something involving brownies? Forget it. They’ve been 86’d for months but nobody will update the menu or, you know, procure more brownies. It’s clear that the owners/managers of this place are happy to leave it in the hands of miserable teenagers and genuinely don’t care about providing decent food or service. As a result, I won’t care to return and give them another nickel.

I went here for breakfast over the weekend and thought it was just ok. I tried a breakfast burrito. The description sounded good but the burrito had surprisingly little taste. I think some type of chipotle/southwestern sauce or a side of salsa may have helped. The dessert menu looked incredible. I would definitely return to try one of the desserts. The décor is cute. My nieces liked the train that runs around the top of the restaurant.

Never cared for places where desserts are promoted as being huge, big enough to serve a village. So I was cautious about the food. Had the fish and chips which was fine. Was very hungry after a 5 mile hike in Brighton Rec Area. Another of our party had the salad which came in a dish the size of my salad mixing bowl! Really? I don’t want to go to restaurants to have enough food for another two meals. Was stuffed and there was no way I could attempt tackling a dessert, nor could any of our party. Perhaps we should have considered ice cream with 7 spoons. I wouldn’t go out of my way for this place.

I am quite torn on the Yum Yum Tree and we used to go so often that my wife and I would fight over the Foursquare Mayorship. The Good: The food is always good. I love the French Dip, the Pot Pie, BBQ Chicken Quesadilla(the burgers aren’t that great). The deserts are phenomenal. My favorites are the Mount Brighton, the Cinnamon Crisp and the Oreo Brownie Sundae The Bad: Everyone with kids no that once you enter a restaurant you have one hour to eat before it all starts going bad. With the amount families the Yum Yum Tree gets you think they would pick up on this, but they are clueless. When it is busy I understand there are other customers to take care of, but we have been in there with only a few tables and it will take 1 ½ hours to get through a meal. The turnover of their servers is alarming. It’s sad that we are currently taking a break from what was our favorite spot in Brighton. I hope they get back to being what they were: a family friendly restaurant with good food, great deserts with good, quick service.

I came here thinking it was just an ice cream parlor and was so disappointed I had eaten lunch already. My friend and I split the cinnamon crisp, which was ginormous! We couldn’t even finish it because of how big it was. It was slightly overwhelming when we first sat down and looked at their dessert menu because there’s so much to choose from. I’ll definitely be coming back here for lunch and of course, the dessert!

Amazing desserts(of course, to share, as they are huge!) but their food is awful. We have given them a few chances between breakfast and lunch and it’s just beyond bad every time. This is a classic case of «stick to what you are good at» and they are GREAT at building ice cream based desserts…
