Just went for lunch. Spring rolls were excellent. Pork with rice for an entrée was also well cooked and a good portion.

Just went to Phở 29(formally Viet Grill). Very good, everything inside has been completely redone, everything is new. New owner as well. He is the cook, waiter, dish washer, bus boy, and is very friendly. Had a bowl of Phở and it was full of meat and was twice as big as expected. We also had fried noodles and wontons. Both very good, and he has tons of home made sauces to dip. I asked about BYOB and he said he didn’t know yet, but he was working on finding out the rules. It’s also very cheap and you get large portions.

This place is a gem! I’m confused by the other reviews that are complaining about the cleanliness. This is truly a hole in the wall run and owned by the man serving you. How many asian restaurants are known for their cleanliness? BTW the place isn’t dirty. It might need an updating in terms of the décor, but I have never felt it was dirty when going here. All that matters when you go to a restaurant like this is whether or not the food is good and prices are fair. This place is dirt cheap and the food is good. My Wife and have been here maybe 6 times and have taken friends on 3 occasions. Every time the food was good. I highly recommend if you want vietnamese that is authentic, inexpensive and good.

Located in quaint downtown Canton, this little gem of a restaurant promises fresh and delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Although the décor may leave something to be desired, it was easy for me to overlook when I took my first bite into my bowl filled with spring rolls over vermicelli… now that’s the real deal… that’s what I’m talking about!

My husband and I are huge fans of Vietnamese cuisine. When we moved to Massachusetts, we were saddened to not be able to find a Vietnamese restaurant like the authentic ones we loved in St. Paul, Minnesota. Then we were directed to Viet Grill. We weren’t thrilled. The cleanliness is always the deal breaker though, and we won’t be returning. This is why: It’s a small dining area with little or no ventilation, so it was stuffy and stale. The tables seemed clean enough, but I had to wipe rice off my chair before sitting down. The worst was the bathroom. The owner escorted me through the maze that served as their kitchen to a tiny back restroom that looked and smelled like it had never been cleaned. Ever. It was one of those times that I wondered if even washing my hands would infect me further. I was so traumatized by the time I returned to our table that if our food hadn’t already arrived, I would have grabbed my husband’s arm and bolted. Now for the food. The menu is slim and didn’t seem to really have much variety. The egg rolls weren’t great — a little too much like«over-used oil» Chinese food — but the spring rolls were decent and seemed to be fresh. The Phở was good, but smaller than the portions we’d had at other restaurants. We didn’t stick around longer than we had to. A tip: Use the bathroom BEFORE you dine here. It wouldn’t hurt to throw a few alcohol wipes in your pocket or purse either!

While the service was a bit slow, the food was excellent. My three friends had Phở, while I had the Vietnamese patties. Everyone was happy with their food. I think this is a bit of a find, a nice little hole-in-the-wall. It was about $ 45 for four of us, without alcohol, which is pretty decent for a good dinner. It’s cash-only, so bring some!

First impressions are everything. After being a foodie city-dweller and then taking things a bit slower, one begins to separate the hype from the real deal. Viet Grill is the real deal; things are prepared freshly, so you should expect to wait a bit for your food. I agree that the Chick/Shrimp wonton soup could have been better(at least in terms of soup base flavor), but I always enjoy the fresh spring rolls. Oh, and you might want to go ahead a get the ‘crispy hen,’ which is not really that crispy or greasy/fried.(Yes, as one Unilocaler wrote, I too, have some wrappers at home, but having to go out an buy the ingredients can sometimes put this ‘now-burbie-dweller’ out on a wild-goose chase. Sometimes the convenience element matters!) For me, that means enjoying some phở and some great fresh rolls with peanut sauce. The Viet Grill is just the ticket!

I was craving vermicelli(bun) today and was trying to find some close to work. I decided to check out VietGrill and I’m glad I did. I had soft spring rolls(not the fried kind) to start, which were good. They had pork, shrimp, and lettuce and came with a pretty good peanut sauce. The bun(with fried spring rolls) was very good, and the portion size was perfect. The food didn’t come out super fast, but the wait wasn’t too bad either. I’ll have to talk David L. into giving VietGrill a second chance. The owner was super nice. I can see why everyone loves him.

I’m trying to like this place because the little old man was so cute, but it’s just not doing it for me… I can’t do it. My Chicken/Shrimp Wonton soup was ok — Terribly small portion for the price and the only flavor came when I added hoisin and hot sauce and a splash of lime. The noodles were tasty — I’ll give them that. Even the wontons were good, but again, no flavor whatsoever. I couldn’t even taste chicken or shrimp. Paul’s chicken wings looked nice and crispy so maybe the Phở isn’t the way to go — Which is blasphemy in my food since I only go to Vietnamese places FOR the Phở. Located in Canton Center — There is no reason to come here unless you live in the suburbs!

The Vietnamese food here deserves about 3 stars, but I am bumping my review to 4 stars just because I love the little old man who owns this hole in the wall restaurant. He was so friendly and kind! Our group of 6 was just getting settled when he came over to greet us and pulled up an extra chair so that our friend would not have to place her purse on the floor(she didn’t care, but he insisted it would be better). How cute is that?! Anyway, I should probably elaborate on the food… The boy and I shared a plate of Vietnamese spring rolls(just OK and a tad bland). We also had bowls of chicken phở and beef phở, which were tasty. The cuts of meat were quite lean and the ingredients were all very fresh – including the plate of bean sprouts, lime, cilantro and basil. The broths were clear and distinctly meat flavored – not the best I’ve ever had, but good enough considering we were dining in Canton :) The boy wished that his portion could have been bigger, but the bowl of soup was just about right for me… Although service was a little on the slow side, I cut them slack because it seems that there is just one person working the kitchen besides the old man, and he was simultaneously making drinks, taking orders and serving food. It was definitely homestyle dining, and I can’t imagine there are that many authentic Asian restaurants in Canton… Note: The prices are cheap, but it’s cash only.

This place is fantasitic. Sure the food takes a bit of time, but that’s because they are cooking it fresh. I love Vietnamese food and have tried most of the restaurants in Boston. Nothing outside of Boston is even close to being as good. And forget about Phở So in Randolph. It isn’t anywhere near as good as the branch in Dorchester and even that one stinks compared to Viet Grill. I love it. I don’t have to drive 20 miles to get good Vietnamese food anymore :)

You either like it or you don’t. I don’t. If you go on a cold and windy night, be warned, you will be blown off your chair when someone walks in. I returned 2 broken water glasses and I had to wonder what I didn’t see. Portions were not American size and the taste didn’t rock me either. Not worth the recommendation unfortunately.

I dined at VietGrill on a Saturday night. It was very busy there. I have mixed feelings about this place. My son and I went. We shared an order of spring roll. The spring roll was very tasty, not at all bland like one reviewer wrote. I ordered the beef phở. It was good, but I was expecting eye round for the beef, and it wasn’t as good of a cut of meat. It was more tough. The taste of the soup was excellent, however. It was not the largest bowl I have ever seen, but it was plenty for me. My son ordered a dish that was awesome. It was wontons in a sauce with vegetable, chicken, shrimp and pork. It was enormous and so cheap. He loved his dish, and I enjoyed it too. One small complaint, the shrimp were very small. First negative– the place is small and the ventilation is awful. I read another person’s review that stated that they walked out smelling like oil. I think I may have smelled a bit oily when I walked out, too. I could see the smoke from the food cooking wafting through the dining area. Finally the owner opened the back door to air out the place. Second big negative– the service is EXTREMELY slow. I really thought it was just because it was very busy, but according to other reviews, the slow service is common. The owner was very nice, however. I think next time,(and yes, I will give this place another go) I will do take out, or go on a weeknight, instead of the Saturday night that I went on. There were a lot of things that looked interesting to me on the menu and I can’t wait to try. No credit cards, so be prepared. This place is a little hole in the wall, but it did not appear unclean to me at all.

— Service: the owner is very friendly for that i give this restaurant 2 stars. The service is very slow as the restaurant is run by a couple without any waiter/waitress. — Food: The food can not represent Vietnamese cuisine. I have tried Spring roll, Pork chops, Pancake and fried veggies. All were very oily. — Cleanness: No fresh air in the room. When you get out of the restaurant, all you can smell from your hair and your cloth is oil and food.

I went here with high expectations after hearing great things from a few coworkers and I have to say, I was very disappointed. Normally, I don’t mind the hole-in-the-wall type restaurant(some of my favorite restaurants are not much more than a kitchen and a counter!) but Viet Grill was a bit on the dirty side. I had to ask for a clean glass and clean silverware twice! We were also the only ones in the restaurant and the food took well over 30 minutes to prepare(we were in for a quick lunch!). I usually don’t mind if the food is good but the pork chops that I had were way overmarinated with too much sweetness that was almost difficult to eat(not to mention a very small portion of rice compared to the size of the pork chops!) One of my coworkers had the largest Phở they had(which traditionally is enough for two people) but he was still hungry after being served soup in what may be described as a large cereal bowl. I hate to say it, but I will not be back again.

The little guy that owns this place is the cutest guy ever. There first time I ever went in I forgot my wallet and I was going to go to the ATM but he was like«OOOOooh… don’t worry about it! You pay next time!» And I did. I gladly went back and paid for both times(even though he forgot I reminded him). He’s offered to carry things for me and open doors for me. Never has there been better more thoughtful service anywhere ever. The space itself is tiny but he’s got it covered with well cared for plants. And the seating is nothing special but it does the trick. I know a story. Apparently, this guy owned a Vietnamese restaurant in Waltham and then retired and moved back to Vietnam, but he missed running a restaurant in MA so he came back and opened this little place in Canton. And the food. Everything I’ve had has been just plain delicious, and he’ll happily suggest new things for you to try if you ask. Plus, he brought Vietnamese to a part of the South Shore that had none, and, for that, he’s a saint. This place deserves every star I gave it. (Note: Cash only.)

Hot Phở on a cold day… Based on only one visit so far I rate this place as excellent. We had beef phở, chicken phở the traditional Vietnamese sandwich and the cold spring rolls. Everything was excellent. It’s kinda small but most great places in Canton have started out that way. They only take cash which is aggravating but theres an ATM just up the street past the post office. Last weekend it was bursting at the seams as I drove by so obviously its catching on.

Wondered about this place so we ventured in. What a huge disappointment! The menu was small and limited, but that’s not a problem if the food is good. Sorry, but the food was not good. Ordered the fried spring rolls. Horrible! The filling was soggy and flavorless. The only good thing was they were crispy on the outside and not greasy. Why didn’t we order the fresh ones you ask? Because we make our own at home and had it twice for dinner that week already. The pork chop on rice was nasty. The rice was leftover rice moistened with water. That’s how people tried to make leftover rice edible in the old country. The pork chop had a stale taste. It seemed to have been marinated for too long. Also had the shrimp/pork patties on rice noodles. The patties were decent, but the rice noodles were soggy. There were only two customers on a Friday night and the service was slow. It was also hot and uncomfortable inside. The only thing good was the service was at least friendly. If you’re craving Viet and you’re in the Canton area, skip this place and travel into Randolph or Dorchester instead.

Want to go to a small yet authentic Vietnamese restaurant? Well look no further than the VietGrill. They have a small menu but what is on there is sooo good and the owner was really nice. They even have a high chair for a little one and they were super friendly to ours. We were amazed at the prices — hubby and I both walked out full for just over $ 20 and that was with extra iced Vietnamese coffees to go. Place has 8or9 tables so it is on the small side but it is so worth going, we will be going back again soon! It is right in downtown Canton where a lot of the other restaurants are.

Run by the proprietor of my all-time favorite Vietnamese restaurant(the late, lamented Vietfoods on Main St, Waltham). The owner is super-friendly and the food is delicious and inexpensive, too. Highly recommended!
