I got a regular philly, nothing super special about it, chips and a drink. It costs close to $ 12 which seems over priced to me. The sandwich was good, service was friendly and efficient but unless I have a coupon I will avoid going there.

So I tried this place today because I had seen it was near to my house for a while. The sign said they specialize it Philly Cheesesteaks so I was looking forward to it. I can’t say there was anything bad about the establishment or the service but the sandwich I got was just not good. The Newcastle Philly was just not what I expected. Thousand island dressing on a Philly? It tasted like a terrible Big Mac. Not only that but a 7 in sandwich and drink was 12 bucks! That’s too expensive for a gross sandwich. Maybe they have better sandwiches and maybe the Regular Philly is good but I couldn’t tell with mine smothered in 1000 island. With the wealth of sandwich places in C’Ville I think I’ll be spending money elsewhere.

Recently remodeled interior adds to the atmosphere of a good sub shop. This place makes a quality sub using good ingredients. Staff is friendly and polite, way better than the jersey mike’s it replaced. Even if it’s a bit pricey I’ll still choose this place hands down because it’s locally owned and run by a veteran. Recommend the cheese steak or Italian sub, both are excellent.

Newcastle Subs is a locally owned sandwich shop North of Charlottesville just off of Hwy 29. The menu is the usual sandwich fare like you would find in a Quizno’s, Subway or Jersey Mikes stores featuring Boar’s Head deli meats and cheeses. On this visit I ordered the half Italian on wheat bread for $ 8.49 made into a combo plus tax came to $ 12.00. Way too expensive for a deli sandwich which was average tasting at best. I was disappointed when I moved back to town and saw the Jersey Mike’s was gone. Still wanting a sub, I stopped in. I was the only customer there, and that probably has to do with the fact that these guys just opened up within the last month. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time looking over the menu, but the experience is much like you’d get at Jersey Mike’s. Made to order subs with freshly sliced cheese and meats and an array of veggie toppings. Frankly, I think what will hold this place back the most is the price. I bought a half(~7 inches?) club sub for $ 7.99, not including tax. Granted they packed the meats on pretty thick(more than you’d get at a Jersey Mike’s), but it should be at least $ 1.50 cheaper than that. Adding chips and a drink easily could have pushed me over $ 10. I was still hungry when I was done, and for the price I paid, I really shouldn’t have been. That said, I hope this place survives because the quality of the subs tastes much better than some of the chain sub shops, and this place is local. I’m sure I’ll be back, just not as often as I’d like to be thanks to my wallet.
