When we first got to Sushi 101, the front door was open and the exterior glass walls have oversized pictures of sushi on them. Not very elegant, but that’s okay. .. it was a week night, not a night out on the town. It’s the regular strip shopping center restaurant with linoleum floors, vinyl booths and tables. Upon entering, we noticed that it was pretty warm with a slight smell of hot grease, which explained why the front door was open(it was nice and cool outside). The chef was in the dining room and gave us a seat, then went to get the waitress who brought our drinks. She was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant has just recently opened and it looked like everyone was still learning how to communicate with each other in their new positions. We had the seaweed salad(very fresh and cold, good flavor), the Yummi Yummi(good presentation, flavor, and quantity), and my daughter had the California Roll(she said it was very good and fresh). They sell a lot of other things, wings and hibachi, and they cater. If you want the quality sushi experience on a date or long evening out, you may want to go somewhere a little bit more formal and polished. For lunch, if you want to grab a bite on your way home, or get some good sushi to go, I’d give it a chance.

I dined here last night because I had a coupon for this place.(Note: I was informed that this is the last week that they are accepting coupons). My fiancé and I came there around 7 pm and the place was locked. Weird. I guess they lock the doors when there aren’t any customers. We knocked on the door a few times and were about to leave when a lady came to the door and let us in. We started off with the shrimp trio for our appetizer and it was pretty good. The shrimp tempura was nice and crispy, the spicy popcorn shrimp was tasty and the grilled shrimp was flavorful. The portion size was a little small for the price though. For our entrees we had the steak and chicken hibachi and the spicy beef udon. The hibachi was ok but it was too salty for my liking. The spicy beef udon was tasty but a little TOO spicy for me! My fiancé loved it. It didn’t really taste like any other udon I’ve had before. We came to find out after talking to our server that their version of udon soup was more of a korean soup with udon noodles. We also had the spicy tuna roll and the rainbow roll. I asked for a spicy scallop roll(since they are my favorite) but our server told me that no one ever orders scallops so they didn’t have any. Um, ok. The rolls were nicely rolled and the fish tasted fresh but I’ve had better.

Did you know? Sushi 101 offers nigiri lunch specials for $ 10. That’s an amazing deal. This place is right outside my house so I thought I’d give it a shot. The owners are definitely korean, but that kinda is expected for the K-town area. The fish is definitely fresh. They didn’t have any hamachi/yellowtail in the sushi box, but you get what you pay for. I would definitely say the grade of the fish is A-OK. It’s not like the most amazing, buttery, melt-in-your melt goodness type of fish. However, its no publix quality either. My box came with an octopus salad and a potato salad, which are pretty nice pluses as pan chan(sides). They were good, but not good enough for me to crave it. Overall, because of its location, I would definitely come back… only bc its safe and convenient.
