Been shopping at Thriftway for 12 years but it just isn’t the same. I miss the prior staff and today was really taken aback when the girl ringing up my sandwiches was so snotty. I asked why the sandwiches were priced differently when they were the same. She said because only one had avocado. I said that I had ordered both with avo and she said she only had enough for one. I turned around and there was a whole bin full of avocados! You know it wouldn’t have bothered me except she acted like I was a problem. Her tone was defensive and argumentative when I was just trying to understand what had happened. She acted like I was a pain in her ass for asking questions. I’ll drive a little further for my deli sandwich next time where I know I will be treated as a valued local. The sandwich was lousy too! Sorry, it sucks for me too!

Thriftway sold less than a year ago to a person who owns a small market in Mt. Shasta. The town was excited, but not really unhappy with the old Owner and his selection and fresh vegetables and little sales on stuff we use. Immediately the new owner lowered wages, let a lot of the key people go and brought in a lot of rather rude people NOT from Dunsmuir to run the store. He raised the Gondola height to over what I can reach(I’m 5’9″) and created chasm’s where there used to be aisles. Of real concern however, is that in a two week period we found the following on his shelves: * Basil:(1 pkg left) that was brown and wilted * Orange Juice: Three cartons all SWOLEN and ready to explode from Botulism on the shelf. and worst of all: * Meat: rotten meat on the display counter! Not just discolored; – Black-Green meat being sold in the clear wrap packages, and not just one cut or animal either. The prices are through the roof, there’s never any sales on anything but IGA products which are pretty much the dead end of low grade food products. There is almost NO organic, new brands that no one uses or likes. and the vegetable selection is obviously what he cannot sell in the OTHER store being brought down to this one. In short: The store is now, instead of a daily stop, a disaster-relief trip when we can’t get to Mt. Shasta or just need one tiny thing… we rarely go there and that seems to be the feelings around town by everyone I talk to.

Great meat prices — there’s always a sale on a decent cut of beef. But… try Thriftway’s own cured bacon — behind the meat counter. This is great: thick-cut slices, wonderful flavor and the same price or less than the packaged stuff.

a great local market, with reasonable prices and a more than adequate selection, weekly sales, and a great fresh meat selection with a small butcher shop …

Oh how I love, love, love small towns. You can always tell the quality of a small town based on their independent grocer and neighborhood bar. Thriftway definitely didn’t hold back. First the store is stocked with all of your essentials. If you need it, they have it. We had to make several trips to this store on our week long stay in Dunsmuir and each time we found what we needed and more. Bristol Farms it is not, but I would take Thriftway over the high price tag of «gourmet» food any day. Second the people are terrific. This is a community grocery store, everyone knows everyone’s business and share it across the check out lines. First names are used freely and there is a familiarity that you do not see outside of close knit communities. I even got a cooking lesson from the young check out girl on how to prepare ramen noodles so they taste just like chow mein. How great is that. Third 20% of all sales go towards saving the Dunsmuir Library. Shopping with a cause. Oh Thriftway I will be back on my next stop over in your lovely town of Dunsmuir.

This is the only grocery store in Dunsmuir. Alpine Gourmet is closed. The owner did away with the plastic grocery bags and if you bring your own in they’ll give you a credit. It seems like they are working hard on keeping there produce section nice and are bringing in more organics. I also noticed they have more veggie frozen products.
