«Quaint local Southern food restaurant» This is a place I drove by MANY times before realizing it’s a full-on restaurant. It’s quite small and easy to pass with its unobtrusive sign. However, I stopped inside with two friends for a weekday lunch and saw there was quite a crowd of locals(who very much appeared to be regulars). The mean age of customers was probably in the 60s. Same thing happened when I came a second time with my two kids for a weekend breakfast. Looks like they serve breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, they have lots of meaty options but also biscuits, eggs, toast, hashbrowns, pancakes, waffles, etc. The lunch options appear to rotate, but they apparently regularly have the«hamburger steak and gravy». Lunch specials were $ 8 including tax, and come with a main dish, 2 sides, bread(hush puppies or a little roll like we used to get in school cafeterias), and iced tea. The main dish choices today were the hamburger steak or chicken & dumplings. Sides included turnip greens, green beans, cabbage, okra & tomatoes, peaches, potato salad, etc. Positives: + Mostly VERY friendly service(but see one unfortunate exception below). + Price fair– $ 8 for lunch including tax is OK. Breakfast was also reasonable– all three of us ate a bit for under $ 11. + Some dishes were very tasty. I liked the hamburger steak(though one of my dining partners did not). The hush puppies were great– hot, fresh, and hand-made. I also liked the turnip greens and okra. For breakfast, the biscuit was EXCELLENT– clearly fresh, fluffy, and delicious. Grits were also good. + Service was VERY fast, coming out on styrofoam plates within a few minutes of ordering. Minuses: — No credit cards accepted. — Although the hostess was very friendly, we felt a little«out-of-place» here, as both visible non-regulars and being under age 50. — Some dishes were not great. The green beans were clearly canned. The cabbage was pretty bland. I didn’t like the chicken & biscuits– tasted too much like slightly thicker chicken soup to me. — One of my dining partners was offended by a staff member when we came for lunch. She asked for the iced tea, and the staff member asked if she was pregnant??? The staff member then justified it noting that some pregnant people avoid the iced tea. But my friend a) is not pregnant, and b) does not look remotely pregnant or «big». Clearly no offense was intended, but my friend was mortified. Synopsis: This is a tough one to review. Clearly, a lot of locals like it. I liked my food both times. But some of the dishes were less-than-outstanding, and newcomers do clearly«stand out» in a slightly uncomfortable way, so hard to give a glowing review. I don’t think it’s a place people should rush to go try, but if you live nearby or pass by it, it’s worth a stop. Most amusing tidbit: The sign saying«No blowing nose inside– Go to restroom»(uploaded).
