Hair by Design

I read good reviews about Jian and came for my touch up. He charged me 220 $ while he charges 250 for the full hair. He mistreated me and manhandled me when I tried to explain to him that he was cheating me. I wrote the check and went outside with lot of anger and he came out running to say that he will give me for 200. He returned 20 $ by check. He knows he has cheated since he was talking in hush voice inside the salon, while his next customer was waiting.
I expected to have a good experience so that I keep a constant hair stylist for myself but looks like Jian was a big cheat.
He is good with his work I will not deny. But he has definitely cheated me and manhandled me for which I am very upset.

Jian is great! I’d searched everywhere since moving to the DC area to find someone who did Japanese Hair Straightening for a reasonable price. At $ 200 you can’t beat his price. He does a great job, didn’t damage or break any of my hair unlike previous people I’ve tried. I’ve been back twice for touch ups. I highly recommend him to anyone!

I live in DC and have been coming here for 5 years. Michelle the owner is very sweet and takes the time to understand what her customers are looking for. I am always willing to make the drive out of loyalty to a business professional who is genuine and gives a great cut and color for a very reasonable price.

I have been getting my hair cut and colored here for about two years, and my Mom has been going to Michelle at Hair by Design for roughly 4 years or longer.
The Salon itself has an older feel to it, and some of the clientele can be more mature, but Michelle’s expertise is the reason to come here.
She can do most anything and is especially skilled at high lighting, cut, and color. My Mom constantly gets compliments on her hair, which is fully highlighted.
I’m always happy with the way she cuts and colors, and if not then she always fixes it for me.
She does a great job with eyebrow waxing as well and it doesn’t cost but $ 10 dollars.
Jian does Japanese hair straightening or «magic straight» and I have seen him tame the most curly or unruly hair. I have never gotten it done since I have naturally straight hair, but I know that he does a great job as his clients always leave happy. He doesn’t like to cause damage to hair during the process, and is very careful.
Michelle also does a great job with Men/​Boys haircuts. She regularly cuts my younger brother’s hair.

The prices are also very reasonable!

Since the birth of my third son my hair went from wavy to frizz supreme. For years I tried every special shampoo, conditioner, oil, spray, irons, everything! Nothing worked for longer than a few hours, and god forbid it be humid outside or raining! I looked like Frizzball the Yetti Queen! Anyway, while looking for yet another «fix» I learned about Japanese Straightening and Hair by Design seemed to be the best place around here to try it out. I didn’t expect much, but after years of trying everything, why not try this too?
I went in for a cut first so my stylist would have a chance to evaluate my hair as it’s much thicker than normal and pretty long. I originally wanted to get Jaun as I had heard great things but ended up with Michelle who turned out to be perfect! I asked her to give me a cut that would go well with straight hair and then gave her free reign. She made me nervous by cutting off more than I expected, but she was right about how awesome it looks straight! Still long but nice and layered in the front. We made the appointment for Japanese straightening for the following week.
On the day of my appointment I cleared my schedule as we knew my hair would take more work than normal. It’s long, heavy, thick and takes forever to dry. Seriously, we spent more than 4 hours just drying it. This was the longest poor Michelle has ever had to spend on a clients hair, but she didn’t complain and was careful and methodical throughout the whole process to make sure I got the best results possible.
Two months later and I still can’t believe the difference, my hair is AWESOME! I let it air dry in a fraction of the time it used to take, or I can blow dry it without it becoming a huge bird’s nest. It dries straight with just a bit of wave which I can iron out if I like for special occasions. I haven’t had a frizzy day sense, even when caught in rain storms on the soccer field, still straight and shiny and basically awesome! When you don’t hate your hair, it’s almost life changing! I just had my first haircut with Tina today, based on my girlfriend’s recommendation.
She was very nice and quick, and gave me one of the best cuts I’ve ever had. Quite cheap too — I’ll definitely be back!
