I’m sure it was a fluke, but I ate an Unagi sushi roll last night at Maroo and ended up with food poisoning. I have eaten there before and had no problem.

I have been coming here for going on 5 years now, and though I’ve happily tried other places(to at least give them a fair shake) Maroo is hand’s down my favorite place to go for sushi. My whole family can eat here, and not break the bank. The service is ALWAYS amazing. The owner is super sweet, and always very accommodating. Best of all, the food is phenomenal! I’ve tried almost every roll they have, and a couple other things on the menu(though I will admit, we’ve never tried the Korean inspired dishes) I’ve never had a bad item. Fish is always fresh, as well as the veggies. if you’re not sure what to get, and you can handle spicy items, I recommend: Firecracker Roll Spicy Tataki Debo Roll Dreamer Roll(not spicy) Joe’s Dream Roll and though it’s not sushi, it’s still good The Cannonball

Maroos is one of our favorite restaurants. The sushi is always fresh, the service is friendly and fast and the prices reasonable. Love the firecracker roll. It gets busy so make a reservation.

We wanted to try something new so Unilocaled Maroo. So pleased! Sushi is all we had and it was so fresh and… well…refreshing! We had the Playboy, the Sumo, and the Crunch rolls. Perfect combination! Well done!

I like the food here but there is something that always gets the hubby’s tummy churning. Maybe the kimchi? Loved my bi bim bap. Mother in law enjoyed her seafood gogi.

We eat at Maroo’s quite frequently. It is the best sushi place in town in my opinion. It is a clean family friendly environment without dirty/sexually suggestive names for the roles like they have at another popular Japanese restaurant in Fresno. The food is wonderful, although I do admit I have always ordered the Shashimi and the sushi rolls, and I haven’t tried the other items on the menu. The menu is huge. I love the large selections of items to choose from. The service has always been excellent. I am surprised by some of the negative reviews that I have read. I imagine that they got there on a really busy night. I personally have never had a bad experience there. I have been going there for a few years ever since my daughter and son-in-law introduced me to sushi. If you are going there for the first time I highly recommend the crispy onion sashimi and the baked spicy yellowtail roll. I get those every time and then order a few other things that we haven’t tried yet. You won’t be disappointed.

Authentic and Maroo is like water and oil, it just doesn’t mix. They are a fusion Japanese-Korean restaurant that caters to the western american palate and I like to review them just as that. Because I do think this restaurant is not bad for what it is, but if I was to put authentic into the equation this place would probably get a one star. In a nutshell, for those of you hardcore Japanese and Korean food enthusiast that knows the cuisine well, this place might be a grotesquely huge disappointment, but for those of you who has no idea what the real food should taste like, and probably eats Sriracha with your Japanese/Korean food, you’re gonna be ok. The sashimi here, from what I sampled isn’t like out of this world amazing but it is fresh and pretty decent for a Japanese-Korean fusion. However their frozen seafood-mussels, shrimp, scallops and clams utilized in their soup is directly from frozen and does not taste fresh, and this comes from someone who loves and knows his seafood. So try to stick to the sashimi and avoid the sundubu. I ought to say their lunch prices is really cheap, for under $ 10, their lunch specials is generously portioned and had quality. I order the sushi lunch special for $ 9.95 and it came in a huge divider plate with rice, a sushi roll(crab and cucumber roll), 4 pieces of nigiri sushi(salmon and tuna) and a side salad. Their $ 13.95 sundubu seafood was grotesquely disgusting and here is why: it had nasty tasting seafood that was not fresh. The very moment the bowl was presented the smell was just fishy, and that is a clear sign of old frozen seafood not fit to be served. Fresh seafood shouldn’t smell. I did enjoy the large chunks of the meat, but I would have preferred the seafood to be fresh. I regret eating it since, my tummy feels funny now, I just didn’t like wasting my food. The soup was also poorly flavored, almost bland for something Korean. It had no umami taste, and it lacks flavor, like serious good deep flavors that Korean food is known for. Sundubu is a korean comfort food that is not easily messed up, but when food is catered to westerners, I guess Maroo just didn’t care. Overall I maybe would be back for their lunch specials, but I would stay away from the korean meals for now. I do like to note that their interior is nice and clean and service wise they are awesome.

We came for korean food and everyone in the group ended up ordering the vegetarian dol sot bi bim bap(rice dish that comes in a heated stone bowl), which was very good. The spicy sauce had a good kick to it, and I was glad they served it on the side so we could adjust our own spice levels. However, I was surprised that not only did you have to pay extra for kimchi, but that the meal didn’t come with any side dishes(banchan). I guess that’s the difference between a korean restaurant and a korean-fusion restaurant? Also, it was a decent amount of food for me, but I can imagine anyone with a large appetite would leave not full. The service was fine. Our waiter wasn’t 100% familiar with how the food was prepared, but he made sure that the toddler with us got kid-friendly utensils and dishes.

I had really high hopes for this place, and ended up really disappointed. I came in expecting a good amount of Korean food on the menu, and ended up getting Japanese because the Korean selection was small. The soft shell crab was really good. Nice and crispy, and was set on top of crispy shredded potatoes. Shawnas roll was alright. My biggest issue was that the salmon didn’t taste fresh. It tasted like it’s been sitting there for over two days. Though I didn’t like the Korean menu, I ended up trying the Korean Pancake. Very disappointed. It was really big, and really thick. I usually like mine thin and crispy. It was also doughy on the inside, and was pretty bland. The vegetables were fresh, so since it wasn’t fully cooked on the inside, the vegetables remained crisp and fresh. Ended things off with the banana tempura, which is 30%off on Wednesdays. It was good, but I mean how could you mess up banana tempura?
