A great local place for ice cream. The selection is a bit limited(12 flavours) but the quality is great.

What a disappointment. We came for the halo halo shaved ice and what they gave us was a little tiny scoop of ube(purple ice cream) and a majority of flavorless shaved ice. For some reason they also added avocado… Weird… Never had that on any other halo halo shaved ice I’ve had. We also had the Korean shaved ice with green tea. Again, a TINY scoop of green tea ice cream, barely any condensed milk and like 3 pieces of tiny mochi. So stingy…

Convenient spot with lots of interesting shave ice options. We ended up going with a couple of their specialty items. The halo halo is a Filipino dessert specialty that is shave ice with purple potato ice cream(ube) with different jellies and fruits. Really good if you’re a fan of taro. We also got the Taiwanese shave ice, which was okay, but still super refreshing on a hot day. It came with bananas and strawberries. Everything was reasonably priced and the service was quick and friendly.

Nice treat to cool down. Shaved ice was delicate and the juices were typical. Convenient location and quick service. A good location for walking the farmers market while enjoying your treat.

Made a special trip for this place and the teenage girl behind the counter couldn’t be bothered to help us or the family that got there after us. We stood there for about 10 min staring at her while she texted and restocked items. Ended up buying from the macademia nut vendor and then just left. What a bummer!

Where else can you have purple sweet potato ice cream? If you like ice cream and your in Hilo, you have to come to here.

Came here at least 3 times while vacationing in Hilo. Best part about this ice cream stand that it’s homemade ice cream. I highly recommend the green tea ice cream.

Best shaved ice on the Big Island. Always our first stop when we get to Hilo. Love getting a shave ice with da works. Staff is always friendly.

Shaved ice was very good from here and reasonably priced. They were helpful in understanding that I needed to make sure the syrups were dairy free that they were using. The lady working was super nice and helpful. Will come back if I visit Hilo again.

Don’t get a boba drink from here. They don’t know how to make it. They microwave the bobas(egads that’s so wrong!), and the flavor seem to come from the same spigots used for shaved ice(holy cow what are they thinking?! Not much, obviously). Don’t get the Taiwanese shave ice, either. Not sure why it’s called that, because it does not resemble Taiwanese shave ice. Serious fouls going on here. Go anywhere else. One star for courtesy.

The shave ice that I had was awesome, lilikoi and melona :-). The service was great and nice. It’s a small place but it was clean. A nice place to just grab something refreshing.

Perfect snack when its hot downtown. They have ice cream, ice shave, and smoothie selections. The prices are good and service is also good. I had a kona mud pie in a waffle cone… no complaints here! Next visit, halo halo.

Their Halo-Halo with ube ice-cream, avocado, taro, mango, mochi bits, tapioca pearls, condensed milk, coconut milk, and tropical-flavored shaved ice was mind-blowing! The maraschino cherry on top was unnecessary, but didn’t detract from the powerful combination of flavors in this refreshing dessert. My only regret was not ordering the SUPER Halo-Halo!

Aside from their shave ice, they got Halo-Halo, a mixture of fruits, shaved ice, evaporated milk, and your choice of ice cream. What makes theirs unique, is the use of avocado. When in season, they’ll mix in fresh mango. Halo-Halo will definitely cool you off on a hot day.

This one of a few counters in a food court next to the Hilo Farmer’s Market. The shaved ice is the good, fluffy soft kind(no crunching here). The portions are definitely big. My husband and I shared a small shaved ice and a scoop of ice cream and didn’t finish all the shaved ice. It seemed to be the standard syrup flavorings. The vanilla was a bit too sugary for me, but strawberry was right on(none of that nasty fake strawberry flavor). Chocolate macadamia nut ice cream was yummy. Really creamy. They had a handful of local flavors.

While in Hilo, we’d passed Wilson’s By The Bay(which has so many high ratings here at Unilocal) about 5x in several days at various times of day, but it was never open and indeed had no posted hours. Craving a sweet fix, we went down the block to Hilo Bay Sugar Shack and got our shave ice on! YUMM! A small was plenty for two to split. We chose a mix of flavors: pineapple, guava, melon and the all-important condensed cream. It was a bit hard to eat the ice packed down into a ball with the tiny flat wooden spoons(there was evidence of a previous blowout on the sidewalk near where we sat down outside –) but it was totally worth the difficulty! Next time you need a sugar high in downtown Hilo, head to Hilo Bay Sugar Shack and savor the shave ice!
