Taco shop in the recently revamped Sammy’s at the Rice Memorial Center. If you want, Sammy’s also has pizza and regular servery food carted over from one of the serveries, but the tacos are what you want to come here for. The style is somewhere in between Tex Mex and authentic, as you only get a soft flour/corn hybrid tortilla + meat and then the option to put cilantro, onions, pico de gallo, and lettuce at the salsa bar. The tortillas here are incredibly good and really taste like they combine the best characteristics of flour and corn tortillas together. It leans more towards a flour tortilla, but really I’d say it’s better than any flour tortilla I’ve ever had, even at the best legit taco places I’ve been to. However, most of the meats(pork, chicken, beef) aren’t as good as other taco shops(even Torchy’s). What you really want to get here are the fish tacos, which for whatever reason just happen to be the best fish tacos in town. Places like Berryhill don’t even come close to comparing. I don’t think they have fish tacos everyday though, but usually there’s some fried/tempura’d seafood taco with cabbage and sriracha mayo, which should still be quite good. And lastly, the sides of rice and beans(charro and black) are also quite good. All better than what you get in Rice serveries at least. The charro/pinto beans are my favorite and up there with some of the better charro beans I’ve had. If you’re inside Rice, come here or authentic taco shops nearby like Tierra Caliente and 100% Taquito over Torchy’s and Chipotle. If you’re outside Rice, it might be worth driving in to try what may be the best fish tacos in town!
