Since they have changed hands I’ve been disappointed. Their menu is limited if you are a picky eater. I’m not crazy about veggies and tried to get a small salad instead of the vegetable and was denied. I don’t think it would have been too much to ask for when prices are that high.($ 80 for two with alcohol) The filet mignon was good and the wait staff was okay. I just don’t see why it would have been so hard for them to give me a pile of lettuce instead of broccoli which is way more costly for them. I probably won’t go back and it was our anniversary restaurant tradition.

We went to The Homestead for Christmas Eve dinner. The food was great but the service was horrific. They may have been short staffed but regardless, we didn’t get to order for about an hour and then we didn’t get our food for another hour. When it came, it was the wrong table’s orders and we had to wait longer. We rarely saw our waitress and one in our party found a hair in his side sauce. Recommend the food and atmosphere but only if you know the service will be improved.

Eh. It wasn’t that special/great. The bread and butter was good. I ordered the salmon and it came with rice and a vegetable. I chose broccoli as my veggie. It was just plain broccoli, no seasoning or anything. The rice was unevenly cooked; some rice was hard, some was fine. The salmon wax just okay. I also had a few bites of my aunts shrimp scampi. it was very tasty. She ordered asparagus as her veggie. At first they forgot to bring it out with her meal. When they did bring it out, one of the pieces was brown. I’d also like to add that I was with a large group(9 people). They only brought out 6 entrees first. we had to wait another 5 – 7 minutes for the other entrees to be brought out. I don’t feel it should have taken that long, all entrees should have been brought out around the same time,

Cool spot, my parents live about 20 minutes away from Huntsville and I came here with them to celebrate my moms birthday. My parents both had steaks and I had the beef pasta. We had a shrimp appetizer which was tasty but not that much food. The restaurant has a really cool ambiance, it’s just like the historic homes and steamboat house down the way. The food was good but I wasn’t blown away, especially since it was rather pricey. Also, there were a lot of empty tables when we came… Overall, if you’re passing through or have a special occasion this is a spot to check out. I’m not sure if the food was rave enough to pay that much again, especially for Huntsville.

We’ve been here about 5 times and I got the salmon every time because it is so good! Despite the rustic homestead setting, it truly is fine dining — something we didn’t expect in Huntsville. In fact, it took us a year to even realize it was here.

Loved the ambiance of this place! The food was also delicious– enjoyed the trout more than the duck. The duck was a little too gamey tasting that I would like but perhaps that’s just duck. The portion of the trout was great! The Bree cheese salad was awesome and perfect to split! It had a great light dressing. The cheesecake was a delicious finisher! This was my first time here but it definitely won’t be my last!

The food and service were good. However, we had the same problem others had that reserved thru Unilocal. When we arrived a very ‘flip’ hostess Told us we had used Unilocal to make our reservation, so if we wanted to eat, we had to sit outside in the patio, Nothing in my reservation indicated that, plus the restaurant had called me the day before to confirm my reservation. It was cold and rainy, who would want to eat outside? I stood my ground and told them in so many words That this was not my problem but theirs. They sat 3 of us in a small table for 2 in a corner in the very back room. After I had mentioned I would make sure others knew not to book thru Unilocal, the manager came, apologized and comp’d dessert. We tried not to let this spoil our brunch, but it was not the experience we had expected.

So disappointed. We were turned away on Easter Sunday because we were told that WE had reserved an outside table and it was raining. No, we did not reserve a specific table and would never reserve one outside because of our autistic children. We went online to double check and there was no reference to outside seating. We called back to let them know and received no sympathy whatsoever. We will not be back because of how we were treated in person and on the phone. This is sad because we have enjoyed this restaurant for many years.

I had the chicken marsala with asparagus and potatoes. It was very good, but not outstanding. The atmosphere was great. Service was good

There aren’t many fancy places to choose from when wanting to dine out if you live in Huntsville. Unless you want to drive to Conroe or the Woodlands, you’re pretty much out of luck. Unless you come to Homestead. Now, I’ve been here once because I was part of the Honors College at SHSU and we came here before cultural outings. I wish I actually had come here more! Hopefully I can convince some of you it’s good enough and you don’t need to waste your gas driving somewhere else for a special occasion: stay in Huntsville! Salad was yummy. Entrée(some had beef, some had chicken) was delightful. Chocolate cheesecake was fabulous. Service is great and the place itself is very unique and cute! If you live in the area, I would highly recommend Homestead.

Amazing food, amazing service, and to make the experience a five star experience, we dined in a building that was first built in 1830. Some family and friends and I came to Huntsville from Beaumont, and stumbled upon this place by accident after a bad experience elsewhere. When we walked up to the building, I could tell from the beginning it was unique. It looks like you’re walking into someone’s old home, and right away you are professionally greeted by the hostess, there are nice dining tables and glasses, and the overall appeal is very welcoming. The historic building gives the place an amazing environment, the service was too notch, and the food was second to none.

We ate here the other evening because of the reviews left by others and was so surprised! Leisurely ate our meal, service was fabulous, wine selection was very nice and dessert was awesome! Will definitely eat here again! Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!

OK– Is it possible to give a four star review for a place that you gave a one star review previously… and you HAVEN’T actually eaten there? This a revised review based on the answer to that question being ‘yes.‘ While the review written originally stands based on that night’s experience, I am writing this and changing the star rating because I received the service lacking the first visit through a message from the management. They have new front of house management. They apologized, explained the situation and invited us back. We will try this place again when the occasion becomes available(i.e. something special because it’s fancy and spendy), and will update. What about the food? We trust the Unilocal process and there seems to be no question about the food itself. When we update next we will confirm that through our personal experience. In the meantime, if you are considering a meal here and are worried about the service, don’t be. Take from someone who has eaten there. yet!

This is my favorite place to eat. Period. The mozzarella stuffed steak with portabello mushrooms has no equal. An amazingly romantic date spot as well as a great place for parties.

Food was great but the service was not. Maybe it was because it was Mother’s Day, but it took an hour and a half for one round of drinks, a basket of bread, and our meal. And we had to ask for everything at least twice, some of which never made it to our table.

Good food in a nice place, surprising for a college town. We stopped here on the way through town and used trusty Unilocal to find a dinner location. I felt bad once I walked in and realized it was a white table cloth type and $$$ type of place, and I was in t-shirt and tennis shoes, but they didn’t seem to mind. Our service was good. The bread that was served before the meal was hot and absolutely delicious. The scallops special was very good and I’d get it again. My husband had the pork and he enjoyed it. The restaurant is not cheap. 2 entrees and 2 sodas = $ 75. The food deserves 4 stars, no question. I almost gave this place 3 stars, because the old rustic charm was a little too old and too rustic for me. There is no parking, so good luck navigating the dark streets. The walkway in front of the building needs better lighting or a path to the side street. The bathroom are not air conditioned — never a good thing in Texas in August. It all felt a little too cabin in the woods and not rustic retreat. Good food is the most important thing, and they do that well.

I really don’t know what there is to add with praise for this place. So, I’ll just list: –Hostess was courteous and quick. –The waiter(Michael), well there is just not enough room for the good things I have to say about him. He had a great table manner, was quick, on the ball, and not just nice, funny and pleasant to be served by. –The food was immpecable. Literally. I highly recommend the Shrimp Toast. Also, the crab cakes were among the best appetizer I have ever tasted. I had a Filet(medium rare) with mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfect, and I have never had mashed potatoes that tasted so good, in my life. –The ambiance of eating across the street from the Sam Houston Memorial museum is only added to by the dim lighting and atmosphere that The Homestead creates. I would like to say that this is one of the rare gems you find in a smaller town. In my opinion it ranks up there with some of the best restaurants I have eaten at in Austin. If this chef ever decides to «bring it» to the doorsteps of the capital there should be a lot of worried restaraunt owners. I would also like to say that the measure of a good restaurant these days is how many people you notice looking at their cell phones. I didn’t see one person that was not engaged in conversation, drink, or food.
