I have been here twice and will be back. I have had the pulled pork and the beef. Both were tender and flavorful. Great variety of sauces to choose from. Prices are low for the quantity and quality you get. About $ 2 per plate cheaper than Gates for better quality. Best Fries in KC! Eat them with the spicy BBQ sauce. YUM!

We had the burnt end(beef brisket) which was among the best BBQ I’ve ever had, although nearly all of my BBQ experience is in the south east. The sauce here was not too sweet and had a slight aromatic kick from what I think might be clove.

Stopped into Benny’s on a whim, having driven by it a couple times while out east. They claim a history going back to the early 1960s, but I’d never heard of them; turns out the last original restaurant closed when I was a kid. What I’m assuming is the original Benny’s family resurrected the brand a couple years ago. I’ve only had the turkey and brisket. Of the two, the brisket wins hands down. The turkey is of the weird, slimy, lunchmeat variety occasionally found in BBQ joints. I have no idea how turkey gets to that consistency, but I’ve seen it elsewhere. It is not inedible, but I’m not a huge fan(I did eat it all regardless). The brisket, however, was above average if a touch dry here and there. Sauce to the rescue, and fortunately, the sauces are pretty good. The regular is a bit too sweet for me, but that sweetness is somewhat muted in the hot, which I preferred. All told, Benny’s isn’t likely to dethrone the BBQ kings of KC any time soon, but they put out pretty decent product as far as I can tell. A-OK seems about right.

Excellent — best ribs for the money I’ve had in a long time. They are friendly, quick and accomodating. I’ve tried all the meats on the menu except sausage(I hate all sausage, can’t help it) and all I’ve had are great. You get a meal and more for later and their competition down the street may have a bigger name but they don’t have bigger taste– After I went to Benny’s I swore off Gates for life!

My 83 year old mother said they had the best onion-rings she has ever eaten. Now that is a compliment from my mom. I though everything was 5 star including the great prices and big servings. Excellent baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, ribs and sauces. My parents split a huge slab of ribs and two big sides for under 10 bucks each and they took home 6 ribs. I had the wagon-wheel combo for under 8 bucks with a big side of potato salad and bottomless soda. Tereena(sp?) — the lady at the counter was incredibly nice and even though this is a no-tip setup at this restaurant we still left her a tip because her service was unusually great.

What is it about these places taking the name Burnt Ends so seriously?!? They are NOT supposed to be all the little charcoal bits of inedible meat that you can’t throw on a sandwich or otherwise sell!!! But that is what I got here. Skip these unless you want to landscape around your tree with them. The ribs were some of the skinniest, thinnest ribs I’ve ever seen! These must have come off a supermodel pig or something. They were also half burned and tough. The only good thing I can say about this place is their sauce was tasty. The quantity of food is good but when the quality ain’t there… I won’t be returning.

I hate writing this update. I went there, yesterday, knowing it would be good, and expecting a great meal. I ordered the Bull Basket for me, and also, for my son. My 89 year old step dad asked for burnt ends, so I got him those.(Bull Basket is what I raved on in my second updated review). When I got it home, and served it, the chips tasted like they had sat for a couple of hours, or were warmed up, then placed in my take out box. My meat was full of fat, which is disgusting. My son’s was the same. My step dad’s burnt ends were so tough, I couldn’t cut them, much less him. The barbecue sauce is no longer accessible inside the restaurant, without asking for it. They told me it went bad sitting near the drink dispenser, so they put it behind the counter. I asked for sweet and spicey. I guess I got it. My step dad asked for original. They both tasted the same. You know, a few weeks ago, there were customers, but this time, I was the only customer, and none behind me. It was Saturday night, at 6:00. I know I won’t be back. I can find better food for 6.95.

Kansas City BBQ continues to be GREAT. Good quality meat, and a delicious sauce with a choice of original, sweet, or spicy vinegar based sauces that make your mouth water just to smell, Benny’s Bar-B-Q continued my wonderful barbeque experience in Kansas City. As a food lover, being in Kansas City for a week means I will be trying at least 2 or 3 of the city’s BBQ restaurants. And so, after a few different upscale BBQ places were recommended to me by a local on my flight to KC, I asked him about good BBQ at «hole-in-the-walls», and he recommended Rosedale(See Review). After trying that on my first night, I was on a roll, and had to try others. Second on my list was Benny’s. It was 1 – 2 miles from my Hotel, across from KC Royals’ Kaufmann Stadium. «Benny’s Bar-B-Q was established in 1961 by Grandpa Bennie. By 1966 Grandpa Bennie owned five restaurants, including Benny’s Bar-B-Q, which closed in 1986.» Reopened in May 2009, the new Benny’s Bar-B-Q is in what appears to be an old McDonald’s building, that has been re-decorated and advertises itself as «a great place for family dining in a casual atmosphere.» The atmosphere was very casual as it should be for BBQ. They have dine-in, carryout, drive thru, catering and an outdoor patio. You have a choice of sandwiches, dinners, and other barbecue — with meats including chicken, beef, or pork. I had to try the«burnt ends», so I ordered a dinner plate with half burnt ends and half beef. 5 minutes later, I received my order, and it was HUGE. Together with a side of fries, and a bowl of beans. The strips of beef were tender, smoky, and juicy, with a wonderful hickory/vinegar spicy sauce on top. The burnt ends — square chopped bite sized cubes of BBQ meat, almost burnt on the outside, while tender and juicy on the inside. A great treat — and apparently a favorite all over town. I eat a lot, but even this was too much food. Then again, I may have had a bit too much coffee at my conference before dinner. My meal, with only a cup for water cost $ 10. It was a bit like Rosedale, and it was GOOD. The restaurant was very clean, but I guess, since it’s new, it didn’t have quite that«hole in the wall» charm that Rosedale had. But the food was very comparable, making any food lover drool. They too had their priorities straight — on the food and not the décor. So with Rosedale and Benny’s under the belt, i guess I’ll have to try out Fiorella’s Jack Stack, and perhaps Arthur Bryant’s as well this week. We’ll see if I make it, and how they stack up. I enjoyed the food. They didn’t seem to get a whole lot of traffic while I was there. Don’t know whether that’s good or not, but I enjoyed the food, and would recommend it to anyone looking for local barbeque. I offered $ 5 to the person who waited on me at the counter if she could identify the artist of the song playing over their speaker system — The Beatles’ «Hello, Goodbye», but she said she«wasn’t a fan of American music». I didn’t know the Beatles was an American band. That was my only disappointment at Benny’s. Enjoy the food.
