Mtro Central Salon

I was so unhappy with my haircut and experience at Mtro Central Salon. My experience was NOT in line with the other reviews and so I want to share my story so people are aware.
I asked for a cut and bangs from Elisa. She is a nice person and probably a decent stylist all things considered. But she didn’t hear or listen to what I wanted. Granted, the picture I showed her of my former self was not great quality. However, she also did not check-​in with me throughout as she went to work. I gave her a lot of freedom to cut off as much dead hair as she wanted as well as give me layers — I really didn’t care what she did there. What I was super particular about was re-​cutting my bangs into the style I wanted.
She ended up cutting my bangs like you would cut a child’s bowl cut. She went across my forehead as my hair was still wet and cut them above my eyebrow. Yikes. They looked like a giant crescent moon from left to right — I’d never seen this tactic taken by former stylists, of which I have had plenty. Obviously, when they dried, they were going to be much shorter than this. I asked for (and had a picture) of myself with bangs that were much longer, covering my eyebrows and into my eyes a bit. I also wanted them «piecy”/“chunky» looking and she made them like a 5^th graders — super thick and all one length. It was traumatic. I must stress, I communicated this to her in detail before she began but seemed to go in one ear out the other.
Once it was blown dry and straightened, of course the inevitable happened: I hate them. The owner or a male stylist (not sure which) came by and reassured me they looked great. Everyone was saying how nice and dramatic it looked and even though I didn’t feel right and I wasn’t happy, I said ok thanks and paid and left. When I went back to my office, I was self-​conscious and sad, and after 30 minutes of trying to fix them (how could I? They were ruined and too short), I decided that I had to go back and ask for help. I marched back to the salon.
The same owner/​male stylist sat with me and tried to help me. He was nice. There was nothing he could do unfortunately. I was incredibly upset and crying and did not really want him to cut anymore, and he was understandably weary too, since I was so upset and did not want to see scissors come close. I had an event that night and guests all weekend and sadly no bangs unveiling like was planned. I was hoping he could have styled them differently or something. He did straighten the rest of my hair, fixing it from the swooshy blowdry that I got from Elisa when I was first there, which I did NOT ask for. I wanted Elisa to make it straight which I told her, but that again wasn’t understood. So I was thankful he did that.
He offered that I could come back and he would fix the shape and style once they grew out, free of charge. Aren’t most bang trims free anyway? That’s always been my experience at higher end salons. That was kind of him. What I can’t believe though is that I wasn’t offered a refund.
I believe it is not fair what happened to me and I deserve to get my money back given that I was not at all satisfied with the haircut I got, and it was not what I asked for. I would still would like to be offered a refund. If this happened, I would be more inclined to go back there for the bangs trim offer. But now, I just feel so wronged by this place– how can I trust going back to them? I should not have to pay for services that were imposed upon me, and not what was requested at all. I thought this place was high end but I’m not sure anymore.

I’ve been working next door to this place for a while now and finally stopped in for a haircut. I could not be happier with my experience here at Mtro Central. Pedro and Elisa consulted with me in advance about a few styles I was considering and when my appointment time came Elisa did a wonderful job cutting and styling my hair. She made me feel involved in the process by asking how I felt about the length etc as she went along as opposed to me just sitting there hoping I would like the finished product. I left the salon with a haircut exactly like what I expected and I love it!

Elisa my hair stylist and at Mtro Central Salon in Exchange place, JC. I have been going to her for a good year now and she does amazing color, highlights, and cuts! Definitely check her out, you won’t be disappointed. Elisa always checks with you when before she does anything, she takes her time to ensure perfection!

So happy with my haircut here! Elisa my stylist was great and since I have very long hair she asked twice before making any cuts (most places are quick to cut off way too much without checking with the customer first). The place was clean and th e rest of the staff was super friendly. Will definitely be coming back soon.

Don’t go here. They made me wait for almost 20 minutes before telling me they can’t take me. If you’re a guy, check out V’s Barbershop instead.

I came here to ask for a quote on a very simple trimming of my ends. I have very long hair, and I wanted to trim about an inch off without any washing, styling or drastic changes. It would have taken about 10 minutes. I asked the man who sits in the front what the rate would be for a this procedure since it’s not listed in his services. He said it would still be the same as any other haircut that includes more services. I mentioned all of the aforementioned, and he told me to take a bucket over my head and just cut it myself. Super rude and condescending response to a simple inquiry. I would have paid the full price, but I was completely turned off by how disrespectful and rude the man was to me.

Carmelo is a genius! My hair color has never looked better. He has special techniques for highlights that blend and make the color look so natural. No streaky lines like you see on other heads. He is a true professional, Jersey City is lucky to have this salon and the talented stylists right here in our neighborhood. I love coming here and appreciate Carmelo and Pedro working so hard to please their customers.

I am very scared of doing anything to my hair. After seeing the reviews I decided to give this place a try. It was just before Thanksgiving get-​together and I received lot of compliments Honestly, just got a wash and trim, nothing fancy. The hairstylist was talking to me constantly through the process explaining what he was using and why. What I liked the most was that he did not try to sell me anything and was also patiently answering all my queries.
Planning to go there again soon and hope to get the same service.

As evident from loads of positive reviews here, this place is really awesome. The staff are warm and friendly. Pedro is one hell of a cool guy. I’ve got my hair cut from this sonofableach two times now and he’s given me two rocking haircuts. I always leave this place smiling ear to ear. Would recommend this place to anyone. Have recommended a couple of my friends and there have only been positive reviews so far. I hope I don’t have to go to a different salon EVER (knock on wood)

LOVE this salon! They are absolutely wonderful and provided GREAT customer service. Everyone that sees my hair loves it and comments that it looks fantastic! Camillo took the time to understand what I wanted and he delivered! The prices are reasonable for the area and duration of the visit corresponded to the dire need of my hair. They are like family and want to make sure every customer leaves happy and satisfied!
I would recommend this salon to everyone!

After reading the other reviews, I was so excited to get my hair done at Mtro. I really, really wanted to like this place. I was shocked that my experience was so vastly different than the rest of the Unilocalers on here.
My appointment was at 10am, and the receptionist called just as I was walking in to tell me their stylist had cancelled. She told me someone else would be right in to cover for her. Almost an hour later, the other stylist showed up. I didn’t think it would take that long because I was only getting partial highlights… Over three hours later I left (a total of 4 hours in the salon) late for work, with hair that I had liked better when I walked in. Oh, and $ 190 less in my pocket (excluding tip — for a partial, no haircut).
As nice as the people are, I would avoid this salon. Your hair and your pocketbook will thank you.

Just moved here from Princeton. Have gone to the same place for 13 years. I have NEVER had a better color for my hair! Expensive but worth every penny! Cant believe how good my hair looks. Amazing!

Felt cheated… I went with high expectation to this salon. Called to make appointment 3 times, left numbers and voice mail. I was finally able to talk to Pedro who gave me the exact information regarding Chi keratin treatment. While doing the treatment, Pedro explained the pros and cons of treatement. All thru the process, I kept emphasizing my point… I WANT STRAIGHT SMOOTH HAIR … SOMETHING THAT LASTS ABOUT 3 MONTHS OR SO… I was happy when he finished… walked with a big smile on my face. 3 days later, washed my hair with a Sulphate free Chi shampoo and condtioner only to find my hair back to where it was. There are no more straight and I can’t even make out if anything was even done to my hair. I feel totally cheated, waste of $ 230… buying a groupon deal for $ 99 would have showed better results. I want my money back… As a student it pinches if see your hard earned money going down the drain. WIll never ever go back.

Highly recommend! I haven’t been happy with the color of my hair in quite awhile, and Camilo took the time to consult with me. The color is amazing. If you are looking to go blonde, you must give Mtro a try. All staff are professional and delightful. The location is convenient. I cannot think of anything negative about this salon. I will be back!

Best service I’ve had in a while! On Sunday night I decided I wanted to go from dyed brunette back to blond, not the easiest task. On Monday evening I called Mtro Central Salon to see if they’d take me on last minute. They’d agreed to have me come in and see what we could do. Pedro and Camillo stayed at the salon with me till 11:00pm to make sure I was a happy customer. They certainly did not have to take me on at the last minute, and they didn’t have to be so unbelievably sweet about it. Fantastic service is hard to come by — I will definitely go back to Mtro Central Salon.

I’ve been here twice and I like the haircuts Pedro gave me both times.

This is a great salon. Got my hair cut from Melissa and I must say. She is one of the very few stylists I have come across who actually listens to her customers. I have special hair. and very temperamental at that. a bad haircut can ruin it further. I told all my woes to Melissa and she listened patiently and gave me a cut just as i asked her to. i love my cut. she is a gem. and the salon prices are very reasonable compared to other places in JC.

Great location and great haircut at a better price than most places in Jersey City. All that really needs to be said.

since most people don’t read past the first line or two, let me briefly say, this Salon is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! the service is second to none, and i have never had a bad experience in the 3 years i have been going there! (including the one time i strayed elsewhere, received a bad haircut, and had to have Pedro fix a different salons shoddy work. the chuckles were even held to a minimum, which i appreciated)
Now for the slightly longer review.
Pedro is a both a wonderful hair stylist and person. He runs his salon like few i have ever seen. The staff is professional, helpful, and always willing to work with my busy schedule to fit me in where they can.
My current office unfortunately moved out of the area across the river but i am so enamored with this place that i have to figure out a way to make it over to Jersey City during business hours to get the service that i always receive… which i have yet to find elsewhere.
bottom line, the hair cuts are reasonably priced, the service is excellent, and the conversation during the process is the icing on the cake.
i HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
