Great sushi only thing I disliked was the service. She forgot out appetizers but it’s cool bc it was really good sushi

Had a craving for seafood and decided to stop in her. The menu is very exciting although slightly pricy for my taste. I got the Japanese style soft shell crab, the tofu udon in broth and the King Dragon sushi roll to go. So good. The place is a bit dark though.

Stopped in for lunch twice. Both times they were out of Uni and Toro. After deciding on a few items(Miso, seaweed salad, hamachi jalapeño and spicy tuna roll) I specifically asked to not have them all come at once. What do you think happened? My table gets carpet bombed with sushi. They take the roll back, put it on the counter, come back and have the balls to tell me it was a fresh one when I could see it sitting up there the entire time. Nice service. Ask me a 20th time how everything is when you clearly know you cannot even take a simple order.

So I was initially planning on writing a 4 – 5 star review since I’ve had takeout from here a few times while at work and have generally been very satisfied. The sushi today was no exception, generous portions of great tasting sushi. good selection of items. But then I found a baby caterpillar in my salad. I am less grossed out by a dead bug than the fact that they don’t wash their lettuce very well. My coworker then told me she had a dead ladybug in hers the last time she ordered from here as well. I am just hoping they have higher standards of cleanliness for their sushi. I may or may not continue going here. They are otherwise very nice with pretty quick service but that was a pretty darn big caterpillar in my salad…

Sat at sushi bar and saw sushi chef mauling the sushi with his hands. No gloves. Walked out. Service before we left was awful. Good riddance.

Went for the second time last night and it was a horrible experience. My first visit was a couple years ago and the service was extremely slow, but it was very busy that day. This time, the restaurant was nearly empty so I figure we service will be better, but it was actually worse. Got seated immediately and server took our orders within minutes of sitting down and we got our soup shortly after. That was around 7:10pm and I had direct view of the 3 guys making sushi, churning out to-go orders one after another. At 8pm, we’re still waiting for our sushi and I finally asked the server. She said they’re going to do it «right now» — 50MINUTESAFTERHAVINGOURSOUP! They haven’t started working on our order and probably wouldn’t have started had I not asked!!! Server says they have a lot of to-go orders, which take precedence over the patrons in the restaurant. The table next to us who arrived before us cancelled their order in frustration. Basically, they work on the to-go orders immediately as those orders come in and only after the to-go orders stop coming in do they work on the orders for the diners. After I complained, I noticed they started working on the diner’s orders so people who came after us got their orders shortly after we got ours. There were 3 guys making sushi. Why can’t one guy devote to fulfilling the patrons’ orders and the other 2 on to-go orders? It is absurd! Sushi itself wasn’t good either and overpriced for what you get. Needless to say, I am not ever coming back, nor will I ever order take out(though take-out will be faster)! Management needs to shape up.

if you like the sound of metal chairs scraping against tile like nails on a chalkboard everytime people get up to leave, then go here! it used to be good a few years ago, but the freshness of the fish is not what it used to be. portions are pretty good, service is good, but Im disappointed the quality of the fish is not that good.

This place has great sushi and a very friendly and attentive staff. Good ambiance, big menu and ample seating. It is also BYOB. The only reason why I cant give it 5 stars is because its just too dang expensive. My go-to sushi spot is Kim’s(nearby West Orange) where I would rather shell out extra cash there for what I believe to be one of if not the best sushi spots(I said it). But overall Samurai is a good establishment, just expect to bring some extra cash along.

Samarai Sushi is my go-to lunch spot when I am super hungry. They give you so much food and it’s good! I always get the shrimp and vegetable tempora bento box which comes with miso soup, salad, rice, a California roll, and shumai. When I take out, it comes in two bags!

This place offers a wide variety of sushi, tempura and terriyaki and everything always tastes good! Portions are large and flavorful and the presentation is beautiful! I myself had the chicken terriyaki, clear soup, and salad combo. They offer brown rice as well which I appreciated! Tip: This place is BYOB, so go to the liquor store next door in the Shop Rite plaza for some wine or whatever tickles you fancy before heading to the restaurant. The staff are very friendly. Although there English is limited, they are very sweet and attentive. Three different people were tending to our table of four and the place wasn’t crowded, but there were plenty of guests. My only problem was when it came to the bill. We went out for girls night, so the bill came to $ 100 and we figured we’d split it four ways. We put four credit cards on top of the bill and she came back and accidentally had only charged three of the cards $ 33.33 each. We are good friends, so it wasn’t that serious, although it was a little inconvenient. She was apologetic and the remainder of the experience was great. This was my second time and they are accommodating for small and large groups. Another tip: parking can be easily missed, but there is a fairly decent sized lot along the side of the building in between the shop rite plaza and the restaurant.

Samurai is the best sushi restaurant in the area. We have been going for years and continue to enjoy the fresh fish, creative rolls and large portions. The hospitality is wonderful as well. I won’t go anywhere else for sushi. Highly recommend. Samurai roll, shogun roll and Osaka box are my favorites.

Second visit today, which is a world of difference from our first visit in April. In summary, we are disappointed. All just very mediocre service and mediocre cooking(ie veggies undercooked, steak overcooked, chicken was tough, rice was stale) not to mention the tiny portions given. Those who ordered shrimp were given 2 pieces for their order. Salmon was extremely thin and slim. Steak order was 6 pieces. Only the chicken was decent size but it was tough and flavorless. Brown rice was extra and on verge of going bad. Fried rice was no longer included in the lunch special. Only plain rice and pan fried noodles were included. Even the quality of soup was different from our previous visit. It seemed watered down. They had the right idea in the beginning, luring customers in with great cooking and generous portions but that is definitely not the case any more.

It’s close and sushi is fresh. And we’ve never had to wait for a table. Service is friendly and quick. Prices are similar to most sushi places in the area. Parking is never a problem.

I think the prices here are a little high. Kind of in line with Manhattan/Brooklyn prices so it’s kinda surprising since it’s located in Livingston. But, at the same time, I think it’s totally worth it. I think the rolls are the way to go.

Not bad sushi. I’ve been here twice and have never waited for a table. Had the Christmas roll and the catapillar roll. Both very good. Only thing wrong is they charge for each glass of iced tea. Kids box is pretty good. Lots of food.

The sushi is fresh and there is a big selection. I haven’t eaten the non-sushi menu choices so I can’t really comment about them. Everything I have tried is good. Service is efficient but not particularly friendly. I wiil return.

First off, none of us had the sushi, but instead a variety of their lunch specials. The tempura is quite good. The Yaki Udon and their boxes not so much. Overall, I suppose an average experience. I knock them down from three to two stars as they price everything as if the restaurant is in TriBeCa instead of Livingston. Perhaps, and even quite likely, this is much better for sushi. Don’t get your hopes up on the rest of the menu.

Unfortunately, this restaurant doesn’t do the volume it used to, and it shows. They tend to be out of certain fish more often. They are still putting out quality sushi. A few rolls are exceptional, like the splendid roll, and the occasional special roll. Not doing anything wrong, but not much outstanding either.

I would give it 3.5 stars for the fact that it’s above average for Chinese Sushi and relatively fresh, but nonetheless it’s not authentic, and your typical run-of-the-mill spot. I do have a tendency to order teriyaki anything when I walk into a restaurant with colleagues and realize that it’s probably not an authentic establishment by looking at the menu, and will say that their teriyaki bento at lunch is a pretty worthwhile meal in terms of the portion given.

It’s ight. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is better to eat sashimi in non-Japanese sushi joints as here. This is because most non-Japanese sushi chefs do not know how to cook and roll good sushi-rice. There is an art to making and forming good sushi-rice. The sushi-rice here was too hard, packed too tight and lacked vinegar. Their fish quality and quantity, however, was pretty good. Stick with sashimi and you’ll be fine. This place isn’t Korean either, so there was no chogochujang for the sashimi, which was too bad. I like to alternate dipping and eating shashimi in chogochujang and wasabi/shoyu sauces. But you are stuck only with the latter here. Not bad. Not great.
