Komoda Store and Bakery is so friendly… Their awesome soft delicious cream puffs was so delicious & scrumptious! This is the bomb digity! Their cream puffs were the original than the Liliha Bakery coco cream puffs. If you remember how Komoda prepared way back in the 90’s, their cream puffs are still the same taste… I totally recommend it to anyone…

This bakery. Better than HMB in my opinion. Parking sucks. But be patient. You will find one if you just wait.

The most yummylicious butter bread roll ever eaten in my life. Yes, though they are coming at 8 $ per 12 pieces, not cheap, butyour tastebuds will tell you they are worth every penny! By coincidence passed by this bakery, that looks more like a large storage or farm barn. And you see people queueing(they do not do this for no reason), hence I peeked in and was immediately overwhelmed by this cloud of fresh baked bread flavour. I decided to go for the pure butter bread rolls, but they have sticky donut sticks, coconut twists and all other yummy breakfast stuff! Sorry no picture as my family has eaten all of them in no time!

Meh, on everything, including the cleanliness, taste and customer service. It could be a great place but but the employees definitely don’t want you there, whether it’s busy or not. Selling things seem like a chore and they don’t enjoy it at all. There will be no Aloha here. If you are ok with a dark, dirty and unfriendly bakery, this is the place for you.

Not like the donut shops in LA but delicious just the same. Inside isn’t old school but old timey like the rest of Makawao. I wish they didn’t close at 4pm.

What a great family owned bakery this is ! You will have a hard time deciding just what to get. The cream puffs are the BEST !!! Every July 4th its our first stop when we get our seats for the Parade(Its on the parade route) We cant decide what to get so we get several items top choice being the cream puffs and doughnut on a stick ! We usually bring home a pie too ;) If your a sugar lover this is your place.

This bakery is not to miss when you’re in Makawao town. The cream puffs are the best on the island. The trick is to have everyone in your family get different item & share so you could taste all without eating it all by yourself, less calories that way. If you go there alone like me, I always get a few of my favorites & bring it home to share. The bakery is dated, it brings back old Hawaii feeling of community & culture.

The bakery doesn’t look like much on the outside(honestly, it doesn’t even look like a bakery)… but the donuts were out of this world!

I dream about these doughnuts. When I gave birth to my daughter my BFFs brought a big box to the hospital to celebrate!!!

This is a great little bakery in a sweet town. Arrive early for best selection and service. Try the donuts on a stick.

Came to this place on recommendation from a friend while we were here staying in Maui and boy she was right! The store reminded me on a convenience store my grandfather use to own, not all very inviting from the outside. But once you made it inside everything sort of fades away in the background leaving only the assortment of goodies in the display case. I got some guava malasadas, coco joes, custard filled long johns and a do-nut stick. They were all very good! Especially the guava malasadas made with fresh guava jam which were still slightly warm to the touch. I guess its a good thing they don’t look more inviting otherwise a line might be forming for blocks :).

Came here on a recommendation that we HAD to get the stick donuts if we were in the neighborhood. So after an armrest gripping drive down Haleakala — there was rain, and fog and weird bikers who thought it was a good idea to zip down the mountain in 15 ft visibility — we needed some sweets. The case was pretty depleted by the time we got there, but we were able to pick up some donuts on a stick and guava filled malasadas for the ride home. Glad we did because I was popping those little balls of fried dough in my mouth like hotcakes all the way back to the hotel. Not the cutest place I’ve ever been, but the pastries make up for it. Go, get a stick, and just try your hardest not to eat them all at once.

Came here after our Haleakala sunrise tour! I bet this place gets lots of business from the tours passing through here. The ladies running the bakery didn’t act the nicest. They sort of gave me an attitude for ordering more things after they had boxed up my 12 malasadas. I guess if selling more pastries and making business isn’t the goal here. If it is. Maybe lose the attitude. Especially when there’s a large group buying lots of pastries from you. They could’ve been friendlier. The malasadas were definitely fresh and soft and gooey deliciousness though. It’s the best I’ve had on the island of Maui. Though still not comparable to Leonard’s in Oahu. They have a guava malasada and azuki malasada that are wonderful. Lots of sugar coated but does not taste greasy at all and were still good later that evening. This rating is for the pastries and not the service.

Desserts aren’t my forte, so I’m not one to get excited by bakeries and confectionaries. Put an ice cream shop in front of me and we have a different story. So why am I reviewing the infamous bakery of Makawao and a popular island wide establishment? Because cupcakes hold a strong second place in my heart. Read on… Whenever I’m eating something from Komoda’s, its because someone brought them to work or a party. I will not make a special trip up to Makawao to buy sweets. But after what I recently tried this past Halloween at a friend’s house, I honestly would make the drive up. ATMOSPHERE: I’ve been inside maybe twice, over a decade ago, so I can’t comment on the inside digs, but the outside is just what a mom & pop place looks like: Plain, simple, and looks at home in a western movie. DESSERTS: Chantilly Cupcakes — I had no idea that chantilly was a local recipe until I Googled it. The specifics are that its a German chocolate cake without coconut. Great for me because I’m not a huge coconut fan. So what does it taste like? The chocolate cupcakes are super moist and just melts in your mouth. The inside is filled with a small amount of the cream that makes a chantilly cake, a true chantilly cake. The flavor is similar to caramel, a bit sweet and a bit salty, and really damn good. The cupcake is topped with the same cream and a maraschino cherry. Wow. This cupcake guy is a total fan. This would definitely kick some Cupcake War ass! Cream Puffs — Meh, I’ve never been a fan of these. I don’t care for the texture of the cream puff which reminds me of stale bread, or the flavor of the cream which has a chemical-like taste. Pass. Butter Rolls — Whenever this comes in to the office, I always ask where they’re from. If they came from Four Sisters Bakery, my heart starts to race, my eyes get big, and I look for the nearest napkin and microwave. If they say Komoda’s, I politely pass. Why? There’s not enough butter on theirs, and the rolls aren’t as soft. Sorry. French Apple Pie — A co-worker ordered a whole pie because she absolutely loves it. The slice I tried was absolutely delish! The crust was flaky with that great homemade baked taste, the filling was full of chunky apples and not overly sweet, and the whole thing is topped with a mixture of crumbled crust and possibly a dusting of sugar crystals which gave it a slight crunch. Yowza! This guy may be turning into a dessert lover… OVERALL: Must try cupcakes for the cupcake fan.

We actually stopped here on the way back from a bike tour so it was the perfect snack after 20 miles down the mountain. I would definitely recommend the glazed donuts on a stick!

Setting is a little laid back/down to earth/nothing special. Baked goods are amazing. Had two malasadas and some apple pie — gained about 5 lbs. They take cash preferred and wouldn’t budge on 12 cents for me(on a $ 3.12 purchase) so I had to buy more to use a credit card(10 dollar minimum).

Stopped by for«breakfast» and got one of each of their specialties — cream puff, guava malasada and stick donut. The only thing that could’ve made it better is if they were warm. Aside from that, they were all still delicious! I especially loved the stick donut! I also liked the fact that they are literally a «mom & pop» store who is not all about the looks, but just about yummy, local bakery goods.

What a unique store & bakery… I’ve heard about this place called — T Komoda Store & Bakery in Makawao, but I never got the chance to visit this place until today. After visiting Maui off & on for the last 25 years, believe or not… I don’t think I’ve ever been to Makawao. I must say Makawao is a very beautiful small town… up the mountain just right next to the Pukalani area… Makawao is filled with beautiful green hills, and I even saw some horses on a ranch too. Upon finally getting into the small business town area, I finally found the T Komoda Store & Bakery. Man, it’s a trek to get up here, and lucky for the GPS on my phone… without it, I don’t think I would be able to find this little store. Upon walking into the store, the bakery reminds me of an old school local type bakery… you know, like the Tropics Bakery I use to go to in Kaimuki, when I was a little kid. When I walked in, I noticed it was really dark in the store/bakery…doesn’t anyone know what lights are for? Dammmmmm, it was so dark! I had a hard time seeing the items on the shelves, plus since I got here at almost 2PM, most of the items in the bakery display were all gone. This is what I heard about the T Komoda bakery — they were known for their cream puffs, butter rolls, & the little donuts on a stick. Upon walking up to the counter, I was able to order try a Cream Puff, & I also got a Long John. Unfortunately I did not see the donuts on a stick, nor did I see the butter rolls. What can I say about the bakery items I ate? Well, the Cream Puff was as advertised! The custard was all so creamy & delicious. The pastry puff was light & not heavy at all. I would say this cream puff was as good, if not better than Liliha Bakery’s cream puff. Noms! :) The Long John… oh gawd, it was TERRIBLE! Although the Long John weighed a TON, as there was a very generous portion of custard in the Long John(I like custard!), the dough part of the Long John was very heavy & doughy. When I bit into the dough, it did not taste fresh and all, and all I could taste was the old oil from the dough. Yuck! Too bad I came here too late, so I wasn’t able to try the butter roll, or the donut on a stick. Maybe next time… Overall, still a cool local«old school» kinda place… worth the trip to Makawao to see this place for nostalgic purposes.

We got wayyyy too many donuts and treats here for just two people but it was totally worth it, as we continued to eat them for 2 days and they stayed pretty fresh the whole time! We tried the regular stick donut, coconut stick, guava malasada, chocolate filled, Long John, Anpan donut, apple turnover and maybe a few more. It was ALL ridiculously great!!! We were very satisfied with our selections and they weren’t the kind of donuts where you eat one and feel stuffed beyond belief, they are a little lighter than that which makes them very tempting and awesome! We went right at 7:30am and there was no line at all, then jumped across the street to the general store, got some organic coffee and took our treats to Baldwin Park in Paia and sat on the beach with them(only about a 12 minute drive). It was perfect!

Came here around 9AM on a Saturday and timed it perfectly because a few minutes later I glance behind us and there’s a line out the door. Per fellow Unilocalers, we tried the guava filled malasada delicious, plain malasada, stick donut, cream puff and long john. All are delicious and the fillings in the cream puff and long john aren’t too sweet. Definitely a must try if you’re in upcountry!
