I wish you could give 0 stars because that is what this place deserves. Some of the fish in my sushi was brown the waitstaff didn’t even know what some of the items n their own menu. Place was dirty smelly and gross. Avoid at all costs.

Pretty bad lately. I used to like this place a lot. The soup was watered down. California roll looked like my kid made it and tasted bleh. I think I’m breaking up with this place

The sushi was just ok and the service was awful. Our server had only been working here 2 days and couldn’t answer any questions about the menu. The rolls were very loosely wrapped and kept falling apart. I would try eating here again but would come during a busier time and hope our service was better.

We consistently go to this place because of the awesome Groupon deal. The food always seems to be pretty decent. The cooks are always very entertaining so that helps with the overall experience. Lately though we have been receiving the same waitress and she is absolutely terrible. We have had her 4 separate times now and she will make the whole experience very unpleasant. You have to repeat everything slowly and she will still repeat it back to you wrong. We might not ever come now because of her or at least request any other person from the wait staff besides her.

When we got there I wanted to leave immediately based on the musty smell, disgusting carpets, and the silverware stack had food crumbs, and a cherry stem that someone had tied into a knot in the middle. I had the Lobster Teppanyaki and it was overly salted to the point I couldn’t eat it. The fried rice was crunchy and looked like it had been sitting for a long time in a warmer. The vegetable tempura was good.

Service was great! Décor is deteriorating… Needs renovations badly and chairs are torn up. But don’t be discouraged! It’s pretty good!

Food quality is average at best and slightly overpriced. Restaurant needs a complete overhaul — it just looks and feels«dirty» Our service was very good and the food good, not great. I prefer Bushido’s for that type of food but our group voted on Shogun’s. I do not eat sushi but my daughter thought it very good. This used to be the only game in town, now there is competition from Osaka’s and Bushido’s — they need to update to compete.

The sushi here is delicious! Ashley made ours and she was very helpful and even makes your sushi to order. The prices here are fantastic– definitely cheap for top notch sushi! We also love the location! We will be making this our sushi place for the rest of our stay in Midland.

All this place gives you is good service with mediocre settings. Food is horrible. The management is invested in eye candy people not the food quality. The teriyaki chicken prepared on the table by an amateur(So called qualified to do this) was really bad. They have pretty blondes as if to make up for the horrible food. The settings are old, like 30 plus years without much investment in the upggrades. With the plenty of oil money in this area the management has rightfully guessed that any gimmick would make money in these parts of Texas.

Firstly let me say that this is not Shogun the chain Japanese steakhouse but a private restaurant that we were advised has been in business 30 years? I would be surprised that this is the case. This place was overall less than average unfortunately. Restaurant was dirty inside and was hesitant to stay but gave it a shot and regretted it afterwards. The chef was nice and the chicken teriyaki and steak were okay. The rice was under cooked and the sushi was awful and almost seemed pre-made. The server wanted to keep taking everything away from us before we had finished and they forgot to turn on the grill so the wait time was a little longer than expected but not to bad. The soup appeared to be canned broth with a mushroom and onion in it and the dumplings were not very good at all. The server forgot our crab puff and egg roll and we received late with our entrée. By the time we got to the parking lot my stomach was honestly making noises and flipping around. It was within minutes that we had to pull over at a gas station because I was ill. My companion and I will not return. 2 stars because the chef knew football and was personable and the waitress although in a rush to take everything away, was attentive. I would not recommend the food and they need to so a major shut down and clean every inch of the place.

Went here today with frac crew when we found out that the churrascaria I was hoping had opened I had found had pushed back their anticipated launch date :( Trying to keep an objective mind despite clear disappointment we came here; mostly because it had a groupon offer going($ 30 for $ 16). As far as Japanese steakhouses go this was remarkably… Average. To be honest, the crab ragoon should not be the best thing I had at a place like this… But it clearly was. I’m not sure why they decided to not bring miso soup like any other place worth it’s salt would and instead some beef broth which tasted like salty armpits. Also, isn’t cucumber salad supposed to traditionally have shrimp? I really did enjoy the dressing that came on that though; very heavy and full of zip which is important with such a strong vegetable taste. Add just a little shrimp or calamari and it would be a smash hit. Main course: We all went for steak + chicken in crew, while the others dining with us had tilapia and shallots. Mixed vegetables consisting of zucchini, onions, and mushrooms. Slightly disappointed to have all diners vegetables cooked together so couldn’t get sans mushrooms; but picked around them and turned out just fine. I knew the fried rice would have a bunch of peas and junk in it so opted for streamed. The woman from the couple that are with is opted for garlic noodles, which as I saw them getting grilled made me wish I knew that was an option! Very jealous of how the smelled so don’t make the same mistake! The meat itself was ok. Steak containing an enormous amount of gristle which surprised me as it looked like a great filet pre-cooking. Our chef was fairly talented and put on a good enough show; although the racist jokes about Chinese people and pretending to mess with your food you could obviously tell was extremely off-putting to the couple with us. Didn’t bother us though and was actually crudely funny and appreciated. Doesn’t sound like I have much nice to say about this place but I’m giving it 4 stars though. What’s up with that? I will tell you why and it’s customer service. A problem I have with quite a few reviews on Unilocal is how they talk about customer service when everything goes right. Well… customer service is something you are supposed to get when you go out to eat in my opinion. I am of a firm belief that customer service is judged by how things are handled when things go wrong. In this instance: there were two people that had ordered filet mignon; a member of my crew well done and the woman in the couple ordering medium. The chef accidentally placed the medium on my crew’s plate… much to the dismay of the woman. The woman said she would take the meat that was well more done than her liking; but the chef would not have it. He did give her the well steak, but brought another one out to prepare correctly for her… As well as make an additional order to well done for crew which I don’t think even noticed in the first place lol. Anyway, I admire the professionalism in which the chef handled this to make everything right, and how the request for more(free) steaks was not even questioned by management as to what happened. They simply rushed to get another one. Perhaps they will discuss and get an explanation later as to what happened later. You know when there aren’t hungry guests at the table. PS — the main complaint from crew is how everything was cooked and served separately so that you had to eat throughout the cooking so things would lot get cold. I understood, however, that they were trying to seat and cook for as many people as possible at once in a limited prep area, but keep in mind this is a problem at this place. It won’t be like that at a Benny Hanna’s… But it won’t be $ 20 at that place either for that reason. PSS — They appear to have an extensive sushi menu but I didn’t try any. A menu was not provided until half way into the meal after I asked about pictures on the groupon.

The sushi here is the best in Midland. The service is mediocre and inconsistent. The hibachi ranges from amazing to sloppy but overall it’s a good place to eat.

Our waiter was great, he knew the menu well and, when asked, gave us his honest opinion. This is also the only place I’ve been able to find lucky buddha beer — it goes great with Sushi.

Waitstaff was relatively attentive. However, the cook had the personality of a board! He mumbled and had no style on his cooking procedure. He DID cook the food with plenty of flavor and did cook the meat to our Specs.

The first time I went there was for a date and it was amazing. They put us in a VIP room where it was private away from the other customers. We was sited in front of a plasma TV which was controlled by us. ALSO the cook only cooked for us and our waiter was very friendly! The food was Amazing!

Went here on my birthday(December 2) after contemplating which teppanyaki place in Midland to enjoy on my special day. What sealed the decision was the $ 10 for $ 20 certificate on Unilocal.I purchased that and brought proof(iPad) into the restaurant and ordered away. At the time we walked in(c2:30) my family and i were the only people in the restaurant. Quite a surprise given Midland where restaurants are typically crowded. We got seated right away at our own table and didn’t have to wait at all to place our orders. I explained to our host the $ 10 for $ 20 certificate and also that it was my birthday. A few minutes later, chef Steven came out and put on a pretty good show. After we finished our meals and our dinner plates taken away, our host surprised me with a chocolate-covered warm chocolate cake a la mode. That was special, and it was yummy! My wife ordered hibachi chicken, and i ordered hibachi vegetables and Philadelphia roll sushi. I ate it all and enjoyed every bit. No complaints about the food, but i wouldn’t consider myself the most picky connoisseur either. An extra kudos for our attentive host is deserved for his bringing out, without being asked, a special kid-friendly chopsticks for my toddler. In the food industry, ratings do matter, especially for those who want to go to the right place the first time. i want to give this place 5 stars for the treatment we received overall, their recognition of my birthday, and the good deals on food we got such that we all ate for that $ 10 we spent on the certificate. To anyone considering where to go for teppanyaki, i recommend getting that certificate and getting your fill!

We were passing through the area on a road trip and chose this place because it had the highest Unilocal rating for a sushi restaurant in the Midland-Odessa area. We can’t speak for the hibachi side(maybe that’s why the place is highly rated?) because we never do that — we can stir-fry rice, steak and shrimp at home, plus once you see one onion ring volcano you’ve seen them all. We go Japanese for the sushi, but I wonder if anyone else in Midland-Odessa does. Generally our experience at this place was awful. We walked in and asked for a table. The host led us to a hibachi table. We said no, we want sushi. «JUST sushi?» he said, and took us back to the bar area with a «sit anywhere you like.» Just sushi. Shame on us. The barely-warmed Miso soup tasted and looked like beef broth, not fish, and it’s the first time ever that the seaweed in the soup was crunchy. Go figure. We ordered a selection of sashimi, nigiri, and a couple rolls. The eel had been cooked first, then refrigerated until they needed it – it’s supposed to be the other way around — so it’s the first cold eel I’ve had. Not good. The say that sushi/sashimi is «edible art» but if there is an artist on the staff here, he had the day off. The sashimi came laid out like house siding planks on a few pieces of loose leaf lettuce. The only reason this place earned two stars instead of one is that some of the fish tasted good, but then it’s hard to screw up raw salmon. Hopefully they will send some of their chefs to real sushi restaurants where they can see what they are supposed to be shooting for. Until then, if you want sushi in Midland/Odessa, go to Dallas.

Based on the largely positive reviews on Unilocal, three of us went to Shogun for lunch today. Upon entering, we were told there would be a 15 minute wait for a teppan table so we elected to eat at a table in the bar area. Our waiter quickly took our drink and appetizer orders and brought us each a bowl of lukewarm miso soup. The appetizers(egg rolls and crab puffs) were served shortly thereafter. The egg rolls were flavorless and filled mostly with cabbage; the crab puffs were mostly filled with cream cheese with no sign of any crab. A long wait ensued for the main courses. My lunching companions ordered sukiyaki steak and teriyaki chicken and I ordered the hibachi shrimp. All the dishes were very salty. My shrimp were caked with salt and I had to send them back. They made a fresh dish for me which was less salty but this time the shrimp were covered with burnt garlic. All the entrees were served with fried rice(steamed rice is an option) and a stir fry of zucchini, mushrooms and onions. The sides were pretty bland. This was a disappointing experience and I won’t be going back.
