Great food, Great price, with a friendly staff, and decorative atmosphere. The lunch buffet has a good assortment of various dishes, and takeout is always ready without extending waiting time. My favorites are General Tso’s Chicken, and Twice-cooked pork.

Shanghai is the best Chinese food down on hull street. Their beef and broccoli is really tasty as well as their Hunan chicken. I love cold sesame noodles or Dan Dan mien but it is too peanuty. Good value

Dark and sticky. Food takes s long time I guess is a good thing? However the waitress took our sauces we were using and gave it to other table with same spoon. How nasty is that? Staff needs to present them selves better and cleaner. Their children are running around like is a playground. I applaud those who work hard but keep your children away from dining area. If I wanted to be surrounded by running children, I would go to chuck e cheeses.

This was my first time visiting this restaurant. I greatly enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the great customer service. I had the Drunken Shrimp Noodles and the best Egg Drop Soup ever! I will definitely be recommending this restaurant to friends & family!

Poor poor poor customer service. If you can handle a blatantly rude staff, the food is pretty good. Not for the faint of heart.

I would have never thought I’d find inside what we did based on the outside. This place is set in the corner of a strip mall but we were delightfully surprised when we walked in. We went for the lunch buffet– on Sundays it’s 8.95. Great price! I wasn’t sure what to expect with the price so low but the food was good. This isn’t PF Chang’s so if you’re expecting the best of the best, go elsewhere. But if you like regular Chinese food that you order from a standard restaurant– this place is great! Huge variety from chicken to beef to shrimp. Looks like they keep the buffet small but they’re constantly refilling the serving trays which makes me think it’s fresh and hot! Loved the bang bang shrimp, general Tso chicken, and coconut roll with some sort of cream cheese filling. Delicious. Service was so-so but at a buffet you don’t need to be waited on so much. This will now be on our list of local places to eat at on the weekends. Will return for sure!

Shanghai has updated their menu several times over the last 12 months, but the most recent iteration is the best so far. Prices are a slightly more expense than I recall them being at this time in 2014. Nothing to worry about though. Cost is still appropriate for what you receive in quality. I feel like eating at Shanghai can be two different experiences, depending upon whether you order takeout or dine in. For takeout, my orders have always been exactly as I ask for them. Keep in mind, I order out from here frequently and have several, special dietary needs. As for eating on location, I feel as if the service is a mixed bag. Sometimes the wait staff are friendly, sometimes they exude nothing short of animus. Food is consistently good dining in and ordering takeout. I suppose that’s all that matters. Go here if you’re local and looking for some decent Chinese cuisine. It won’t blow you away, but you won’t be disappointed either.

I hope the food is better than the service — I have now had 3x servers. each time I ask a question the servers can’t answer and go to ask someone else. Simple questions about the menu. It’s a Saturday night and we are the only ones here. That should have been the first sign this isn’t the place to go. First time, possibly last time — if food is good I’ll order take out next time and avoid the bad service. We will see. Food was not bad– wasn’t hot was warm– as in my food was finished before my friends because there’s was hot. Mine was left to get cold. Will order take out in the future.

Pretty disappointing, especially after reading such good reviews on Unilocal.A co-worker and I stopped by for quick takeout after work — my spring rolls were soaked with oil and my kung pao tasted both bland and«off». She ordered steamed dumplings and said there was something off about them too. She didn’t even brave her entrée after eating them. We both ended up just eating our rice, which was the best part of the meal… but rice is hard to screw up. Even the fortune cookies were hard and stale. I don’t think we’ll be back to try again.

Truly a hidden gem with the best Chinese food in the area! You’ll find all of the American/Chinese standards here… but the taste and textures are far from standard. Flavors are both subtle and bold with finely prepared ingredients. Of special note is the lunch buffet. It’s only $ 5.95 with a nice selection of very tasty dishes including delicious soups. Try the outstanding hot and sour soup. The atmosphere is quiet and warm with décor a step above the competition. Service is friendly and prompt.

This is the best Chinese restaurant I have found in the area. The Peking Duck is fantastic as is most of the other items on the menu.

What an authentic Chinese restaurant, Peking Duck is absolutely the best I had in the Richmond, VA area. Great service, friendly, and clean, the food like I said already is authentic with Chinese Chef cooking in the kitchen, short and well pick menu items are all delicious. Dine there more times than I should and they are always consistent. I recommend for everyone to experience this wonderful Shanghai Chinese Restaurant… Lalaine

I made the mistake of ordering lunch delivery from Shanghai yesterday. I called them after waiting 45 minutes and the lady informed me they didn’t have a car to make deliveries. I told her I wanted a refund and all of a sudden she found a car. I then asked if the food was going to be cold and she informed me she would take care of it. After waiting 30 additional minutes I called back, I asked where the food was. She said she was bringing it to me now. I told her I did not want old food she said she was on her way. 30 minutes she showed up. The bag seemed hot so I went ahead and kept the food as I was pretty hungry at that point. The food was disgusting to say the least! It was soggy(over 2 hours old). I will never order from them again and I will make sure that everyone I know knows how bad my experience was! Hopefully they will go out of business so that we can get a new restaurant with owners who take pride in the food they serve and value their customers!

My wife and I discovered this little gem a couple of years ago. I have lived overseas(in Asia) and have always enjoyed flavorful Chinese food that is not as mundane as every other Chinese buffet in Richmond. Over the years, I have eaten food from Abu Dhabi, Brisbaine, Singapore, Tokyo, Hawaii, Seattle, Boston, Houston, Memphis, Atlanta, Albuquerque, Dubuque, Chicago, New York, Denver, Dallas, and San Diego and sampled various platters over time. I am not a food critic, but I am well traveled enough to know good food from mundane. Shanghai is in my opinion, the best Chinese food to be found in Richmond. I discovered this place when a second restaurant was open in Hull Street, but since have been eating regularly at the Lake Harbour location. Note, my wife and I drive nearly 15 miles to enjoy their food on a nearly weekly basis. Some of the gems of this place are the curries, seafood delight, crystal Chicken, spring Rolls, and a whole other variety of dishes I have been able to enjoy. The service is good, but at times we have been greeted by a limited English speaking waitress which made our experience a little more interesting. Despite the slight language barrier, the service was good. We have endured horrible service at other restaurants, but never at Shangai. The atmosphere is quiet, and the dinner menu is easy to review. I would urge people to order something other than what they might ordinarily order when trying this place. Many of the dishes are quite affordable, and unlike most Chinese places in Richmond, the staff has always been friendly and accommodating. Shanghai is a little known secret(as another reviewer put it). We have taken many of of our friends, and I even take clients there. As the description says, this is as good as it gets in Richmond. PS: We have discovered that there are off-menu items available upon request for those who might enjoy the less American experience.

I have been ordering food from Shanghi at Oxbridge for years! Called to place a pickup order with the Oxbridge store… Arrive and they are out of business! I call back and learn the owner just closed the store about a week ago! But she failed to tell me that when I ordered. She apologized and then asked me to drive 15 –20 minutes down hull street during rush hour to get my food because if I didn’t she would be out $ 50 because I had ordered so much. I refused. If you know anything about hull street it’s incredibly congested after 5. She finally said she would have the food delivered to my house which I agreed to, and offered to give me a discount if I would come to the woodlake store. Overall, I was glad she delivered, but I think that was more for her than me, but I was not happy she was not upfront about the store being closed. She admitted she knew I called the Oxbridge number and she should have said something. I felt misled and I don’t appreciate that… I doubt I will go to this restaurant in the future.

Of all the Chinese restaurants around midlothian, this is nothing special. The chicken is bland and dry. Not my favorite place.

I have been eating here for several years. It is good quality food. I never dine in, but take out at least once a month. I have never been disappointed. I would recommend this place to anyone. It is nothing fancy, just plain good value.

Tried the spring roll & shrimp w/mixed veggies. Roll was worth 4 stars but dish was awful… I’d subtract stars if I could. The shrimp was overcooked & everything was drowned in sauce, lacking any distinct flavor. The service was pretty good though… I’d give 3.5 stars for that, which is hard to come by for Chinese food in Richmond.

I always enjoy finding those little known secrets. We stumbled upon Shanghai while looking for something to eat last night. It was pretty late in the evening and we were one of two customers in the place. I never know if that’s good or bad. It was actually good. The atmosphere is quiet and the décor reminds me of some of the places I’ve eaten at in New York. The service was very friendly, he wasn’t a bad singer either, he was constantly singing along with the piano hits that was playing in the background. The food was phenomenal. I got the sweet and sour shrimp, my girlfriend got the General Tso’s chicken. She said it’s the first time she had truly spicy and hot General Tso’s in years! We shared their cheese won tons as well. There’s a lot of «meh» in Richmond when it comes to Chinese, but we were treated to food that was expertly prepared, fast, and darn near perfect. I just can’t believe no one else has found this place. I’d be interested to see what others say about it, but I have to highly, very highly recommend people checking out Shanghai’s!
