Design Within Reach

Walking in at 4:56 on a Friday, we had no idea that they were closing in 4 minutes… and as we casually browsed I began to wonder why it was that the salesman (smiling as he was) was checking the time frequently. I now know that we had been «those people» that walk in JUST as you would like to close and then walk around… haha, I hate those people.
Anyways, this place is great! The eclectic style of furnishings here make me want to go on a design binge for my house! Kyle and I had a great time trying to sit on everything, and check all the price tags!
This place is DEFINITELY on the upper tier of what I would be willing to pay for furniture… but Kyle really liked it, and honestly I have a feeling I will like it too once it is in the house!
But seriously… $ 6,000 for A SINGLE CHAIR?! It better have been designed by Yves, have gold interlined into the fabric, and have a lifetime cleaning and care warranty… yikes, for $ 6,000 I could restore my entire car!

Some of these same designs are in museums with velvet ropes and security guards keeping you from ever touching them or (gasp) sitting on them. Lucky you, you get to visit the best of all possible worlds, a museum where you can touch the art and even sit on it. That’s right, go ahead. Sit on the couches. Try out the beds. Nobody’s going to stop you or even look at you weird.
The prices are steep if you’re used to getting your modern furniture at Ikea and Target, but many of the things here are so worth saving up for. I visited one particular sofa for months before I saved up enough money for it. The staff didn’t seem to think my regular trips to see «my» sofa were strange. And they never treated me less politely for not looking like money. I’ve gone into the store looking positively scruffy and still been welcome.

Design Within Reach has a great selection from the website, but don’t expect to find everything there. The store is mostly a showroom with little storage, so most pieces you buy won’t show up for 1 – 2 weeks, depending on delivery.
The staff is seriously excellent, and supremely helpful. Each staff member is great with helping you pick out the right pieces for your room, and takes design very seriously. Our contact, Ferrell, has even offered to do a home consult. It didn’t end up being necessary, but it’s a great touch.
Among our buys is the Sonno Versa mattress, which has given me the best sleep in my (somewhat short) life, and the unique Cuks rug, which is the new centerpiece of our home.
If you’re into modern furniture and «it» pieces, I’d definitely recommend a stop at DWR.
