Just to let you know, The Goat is out of business. Someone has purchased the liquor license, for the same place, so something will be opening there sometime. Posted this 28 April 2015.

We just came back from a «hike» in McCloud and all of us were starving, mainly myself. I got a turkey burger sub the Swiss for goat cheese and it was delicious! I was also very impressed by how fast the cooks got the food out! The only downside was that my turkey burger was a little pink and undercooked but my waitress was super nice and got me a new burger as well as discounted my meal which I think is great customer service. She got a good tip ;) Now I have a burger for my hubs! I will definitely come back with the hubs :) Yumm!

I understand they’re closing up. I’m not surprised. Consider yourself lucky. Do not go here for a farewell. Nasty food and horrible atmosphere. The staff is what you’d expect after serving nasty food in a horrible atmosphere.

Within moments of entering the tavern, I hear the hostess and a guest call me and my husband a «a couple of assholes who think we can sit wherever we want». I don’t know what we did to set her off because we literally just walked into the tavern. That definitely colored my experience. My husband has a pretty thick skin, especially when he’s hungry, so he opted to stay and get a burger. I didn’t have much of an appetite since we were surrounded by a bunch of folks who looked annoyed by strangers. Hubs says the food is good. I say it’s not worth giving money to folks who want you to feel unwelcome.

This place is a small grill that you would expect to see in any mountain town. The service is somewhat slow, but that’s how everything is in Mt. Shasta. The food is great, especially their burgers. They make their buns fresh at the bakery right next to their little corner property. The only reason they get 4 stars instead of 5 is because the outdoor area is old, with the wooden tables splintering, and some of the chairs are cheap plastic long chairs. Overall it mainly has great food.

The food is meh and the service just plain awful. The only reason it gets three stars and not two is the nice outdoor seating area and frequently changing tap list. Every time I go there I feel like I need to shower immediately afterward to scrub off the filth and I’ve had to ask one of the slower(maybe dimwitted) waitresses to get up off her ass to fill my empty beer glass while she was sitting at a table near by and staring into space. They also raised prices in the short period of time I’ve lived here, and it’s definitely not for better quality ingredients. But, yeah. nice patio with a sweet tree and good beers. I’lll probably still go back and it won’t matter that I wrote this crappy review because I never got good service there anyway. except from Amber, of course!

Was told that this place was a must if I were ever in Mt. Shasta. My husband and I hiked Castle Crags one day and had some family golfing in Mt. Shasta so we decided to meet here for lunch. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside on the patio. After being given a heads up on their burgers and then seeing their menu listing, «Possibly the Best Burger in the World», I said«PROVEIT» and gave my order to the waitress. WEWERENOTDISAPPOINTED and we do agree: It is possibly the best burger in the world. I’m pretty sure I remember reading something about how their buns are fresh and local as well. Fries were delicious. Great pub food. You will not be disappointed. Well, I take that back. I recently went up to Mt. Shasta for my birthday weekend and had planned on grabbing lunch here and learned that they are not open on Sundays! TEARS! ;) I’ll give you a pass, it’s probably exhausting serving up food this good, you guys deserve a day off.

Good food but constantly understaffed. Only one waitperson on a Saturday afternoon = a lot off lost sales from potential customers walking out. This is the third time I have encountered this problem at The Goat. I would eat there more often(the food is really good) if they would have enough people working to cover the restaurant.

When you go visit Mount Shasta, you won’t miss the town that is also named Mount Shasta. It’s a small town, with the beautiful mountain as the backdrop — they even have festivals right on the street where you can see the mountain in its full glory. What do you do when you’re hungry in a new town? Find the local tavern, of course. The Goat Tavern serves an interesting menu that makes a lot of other pubs’ menus look plain — burgers with different toppings, salads, tacos, sandwiches. And of course, they have quite a few beers on tap. It’s amazing how a local tavern has such choice — but we are in California, after all. Us California dwellers are indeed a bit spoiled by our food choices. My burger here was decent, but nothing to rave about. I actually prefer another small town burger place that I visited prior on this trip. It was a really hot summer day, so sitting outside meant there were a few annoying flies around. But nonetheless, it is a decent place to stop by if you want some beer and chow.

Major Disappointment! Dive bar that serves food… Nothing more. Fryer was broke so we didn’t get to sample the fries. Salad was served with a tiny amount of salad dressing in a tiny disposable plastic dip cup. Burger was burnt and flavorless. Billy cheez steak is not bad if you salt it up a bunch.

We ate here for dinner while we were in town for business. We both had burgers and fries. They were called«the best burger in the world» and had bacon and fried onions and BBQ sauce. Awesome. Both the garlic fries and the sweet potato fries were great! The Burgers were HUGE and the serving sizes were large. Mostly outdoor seating, the atmosphere is pretty cool with music. The service was pretty good and friendly. The only thing that sucked was all the flies we had to bat away from us constantly, but outdoors in the mountains I think it comes with the territory.

Tasty! I had pork sandwich with tomato based soup. $ 9.75. The pork had BBQ sauce. Bread was good, too. All my friends saied the food was tasty! They had WINO burger, black bean burger, and salmon sandwich. Only problem was that it was small for me. Maybe because it was after a big hike, but compared to huge sandwich in American restaurants, it’s small.

I was so unhappy with almost everything about the experience this past Saturday night at the Goat. My son and I stopped there on our way up to Yreka for a burger having read the great reviews here. The server did not greet us at all. I had to ask if we should seat ourselves and she just replied yes and went back to whatever she was doing. Only outdoor seating was available and the flies were overwhelming. At this point we should have left. I had the feeling it would be bad service because the table next to us kept rolling their eyes about the server who was apologizing and offering them free drinks for whatever mistake she had made… But no… we stuck it out hoping for an excellent burger. We ordered the bacon burger and the wino burger… onion rings, garlic fries and pepsi’s(which were never delivered and we learned that the machine was out of order only because we finally asked). Both burgers were extremely dry and the garlic fries on my plate were lacking garlic. The onion rings were the only redeeming factor. That was not enough. We will never go back.

I love the Goat. Every time we go through Shasta, we stop there. We’ve probably been about 10 times now. Here’s my assessment of the things I’ve had: Wino burger. Delicious. Best burger they’ve got there if you’re into beef. «Best» burger is pretty delicious too, but if you’re trying to decide between the two, go Wino. Fish choices: both the crab cakes and crab cake sandwich are excellent. Fish tacos are pretty good too. I lean veggie these days, and I keep gravitating toward the veggie burger — yum with the sprouts and avocado. I haven’t tried the portobello, but maybe someday if I can get over my addiction. Bar is good, rotating many beers on tap, so something for everyone. They’re good with the kids too. They have coloring for them, and the kids menu has actual real food on it instead of the homogenized crap most places serve. For example, my kids got the chicken strips this time and it was actual sliced of chicken breast breaded and fried. Yummy. If I love them so much, why the 4 stars? It’s kinda dirty, if I have one complaint. Most of the times I’ve been there, the flies are a little intense. If you can tolerate it, the food and beer is worth it.

Cute little find while on our family vacation. Server was extra prompt, the place had a laid back vibe(actually the whole town seems extraordinarily laid back slash hippie-like-woah), food was great. No complaints here! We sat outside on the patio in the warm sun, my toddler was given coloring stuff and the food came out super fast! The garlic fries were delish, my mushroom burger was yummy, my husband said his burger was OK… but my daughters grilled cheese was one of the best I’ve ever tasted! I kind of wanted one of my own lol! Great place, I’d certainly return :)

Ok, the best burger was really, REALLY good! I had fairly low expectations, honestly… But from my first bite, I was like, wow… this really IS a good burger, and yes, possibly the BEST burger I have ever tasted. And, yes, the garlic fries were very tasty. My daughter, who is gluten-free, LOVED her meal. Sorry, I can’t recall what she had… But I will never forget my burger! lol Definitely worth a try!

We were camping at Shasta Lake when we came across a local Park Ranger named Josiah and asked him were locals go around here… that’s how our less than two hour trip ended us here. Quest for the Holy Grail… you’ll find it on a beer-tap hooked to their ceiling. The food is rustic and gourmet at the same time. Both Meat eaters, pescetarians and Vegetarians can get along under the same roof & not just because there is beer. The food choices are a plenty. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich with the best garlic fries I’ve ever had. My boyfriend a «meat eater» had possibly the best burger in the world… really that’s the name of it but he could agree that it was possibly the best. The ambiance was everything you would expect in a dive… various colorful 6 pack beer boxes are used as caddies and hundreds of cool beer taps are displayed on the ceiling with names such as «weed» and«the holy grail» Jordan our server was attentive and very nice. Must visit if your in the area… or not. Like we did… drive the distance, you won’t be disappointed. And check out bunny flats while your here!

Goat Tavern is a cool little place… not the biggest place ever but it’s cozy. I love the mellow vibe that exemplifies the laid-back Mt. Shasta populace. If you’re just grabbing a beer, hang out in the small inside area and take a gander at the ceiling covered in beer taps. Or if the weather’s nice, sit outside on their pleasant patio and enjoy some drinks and food. They offer standard pub fare, including great sandwiches and burgers.
