Man, this place looks like a dive. But the fried chicken was delicious, and you really can’t beat the prices. Just walk up to the counter and yell your order at someone if it’s busy, or you’ll never get served. They expect it. In fact, they seem to enjoy it.

The name may be the«Barbecue Hut» but I highly recommend anything on their menu that comes from the fryer. Portions are generous and the prices are low. A «platter.» which includes two sides, and a soda would set you back at most, $ 8.00. The fried chicken here is phenomenal. The batter has a great mixture of spices, and it is crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and not too greasy. The sweet spot for fried chicken. The fried pork chops were just a little bit dry, but with chops that thin it’s hard to avoid it. Despite the name, the barbecue is just OK, the sauce is good. But you know barbecue can’t be the star of the menu when you don’t smell smoke or barbecue when you walk in; you smell chicken. If I could eat here every day, I would. I just wish the Rutgers campus was just a little bit closer.

i have yet to get a bad order from bbq hut. i highly recommend getting a baked potato — whatever topping option you want(they’re all mouth-wateringly good), fried chicken with hot sauce and white bread, or the pork chop platter with collard greens. those are my top three pics for this tiny grease joint on broad street. plus, it’s run by a group of really hard working people, so there’s that very mom-and-pop feel, if that’s something that appeals to you as well. bbq hut is a hot spot and always busy. don’t expect to just saunter in there during your lunch break, place your order, and walk out without coming back to the office late. echoing the suggestion of another Unilocaler, call it in ahead of time if you’ve got time constraints. claiming an empty seat at the long counter during lunch time is tough, too, but it is possible. it closes early weekdays by 4pm, but opens up early, so you can get a nice breakfast from the counter. i’ve never had the brunch on saturday, but i’ve heard it’s busy and good. the gist: it’s quality grease joint food and a bargain deal — ample portions at a good price. plus, great service. i say this based on the take-out test — the more stuff you get in the bag, the better. i think the test is a good indicator. bbq hut always makes sure you have napkins, utensils, and all the condiments you need — and they’ll ask you if you need more of anything. so if you don’t have problems with your cholesterol levels, come to bbq hut and revel in the undeniable glory of fried food done right.

They make excellent breakfast and great fried chicken and barbecued pork sandwiches for lunch… good prices… always crowded… it’s better to call in your order on the phone…

Every time I find myself in Newark, I make my way to this great greasy dive, complete with a long counter and regulars atop stools, for a delicious baked potato filled with sweet bbq pulled pork. It is to die for, and so cheap. Go get it, quick. Mmm. Update: I swung by recently and they were closed. It was late afternoon, so maybe that’s why. I hope so.

Though Barbecue Hut is right around the corner from my apt, I haven’t had a chance to actually eat any BBQ here, since this place is closed after 4pm and also Sundays. But I have had their breakfast, and it’s good. Whatever you want, they’ll cook it up for you. Takes a little longer than other places, but it’s worth the wait. The best part about the Q-hut is eavesdropping. The owners have a sharp wit, telling customers to «go on a diet if it’s too expensive» or saying«I don’t make your breakfast today. It’s too hot out!» Many of the customers have been going there for 20 years or more, and in this time they have developed numerous inside jokes. It’s totally the Cheers of grease joints.

Ahh, a TRUE Newark greasy joint… Yummmmmmm. I’ve been going here since I can hardley remember and it just keeps getting better. My mother comes to visit from El Paso and this is one of the first places she wants to go and eat ~ straight off the plane. Momma doesn’t waste no time. *****Carry a concealed weapon, heads up, hold that wallet and look everyone in the eye. your not in Short Hills, your in Newark ******

i was in my monkey suit today, having given a presentation to prudential financial across the street and gone through the tightest security i’ve ever seen in an office building, when the barbecue hut caught my eye and looked like a good place for some comfort food. comforted i was! sliding on to a stool at the straightforward lunch counter, i was cheered to hear the proprietors call several of the customers by name. a steal at $ 5.25, i got a platter of barbecue pork spare ribs with substantial sides of macaroni & cheese and collard greens. i could see why there were several old ladies there, because the meat, while a little fatty, was juicy and tender and didn’t require any teeth to pull it off the bone. the mac & cheese had a great texture and flavor, and the collard greens made me relieved that there was something somewhat healthy in my meal. i’m looking forward to my next meeting at the prudential.
