I was in a rather sorrowful mood after a doctor’s visit, so my husband took me to this Mexican Restaurant to cheer me up. I asked the waitress what she recommended, and she prompted me to order the salmon, which I did. We were the only one’s in the place, and it was 6pm on a Friday night. First clue. Silly us for staying. But, hope is always the last thing to die. The fish arrived in a subtle aroma cloud of gamminess. Thinking it was an olfactory hallucination, I took a nibble. The taste of freezer burn was evident. After another smell, I sent the salmon carcass back to the kitchen and ordered a hamburger. I had two Micheladas. The first contained lot of Worchestershire Sauce. The second was more pleasant and came with a banderilla candy straw. No other diners ever showed up that evening, yet the food took a very long time to cook. The waitress, sweet as can be, never offered refills. When I asked her if she had any chips, she replied that she didn’t know, but would check. The chips and salsa that she scrounged up for us were stale. She asked me if we would like tortillas with our meal. I thought this was a funny thing to ask, since my husband had the Chicken Fajitas. I affirmed that we did, and she turned towards the kitchen. Before she got too far away, I piped, «Flour». When we tried to pay, the waitress ran around to various people in the kitchen and behind the bar with our money, like Henny Penny, asking them something, like she didn’t know quite what to do with it. As we prepared to leave the Karaōke crowd began to creep in.

I was fooled by the only other review(5 stars) but I’ll give this place 2 stars cause I didn’t get sick after eating there last night(2÷13÷12). When my husband & I walked in, the room to the right was completely empty but we were told it would be in use that night so we had to sit to the left. No problem. The only two booths were filled with other couples and they were the only other diners in the joint. The fourtop table we were seated at was near the from, and directly under some kind of weird, random strobe disco light that would come on periodically. The menu is kind of strange. It’s a Mexican place but there are very non-Mexican offerings(a couple pasta dishes & American fare). The Mexican specials are limited(one page) and do not include chimichangas(boo, after reading a review for another Mexican place while searching for a place to eat, I was kind of craving one). The upside was that the meal I chose(Enchiladas), came with soup or salad(clam chowder @ a Mexican place? Pass!) so I had a decent house salad(the cucumbers & cheese were the best parts of this iceberg concoction). I’m 7 months pregnant so couldn’t try the margaritas but my husband had a couple of imported bottles and seemed to enjoy that. The lemonade was very tart & obviously homemade. We waited a looooong time for our food, especially considering that by then we were the only eating table in the place. The chips & salsa were ok… the chips definitely didn’t taste homemade though & the salsa was quite thick and kind of a blobby thing but when you’re so hungry from traveling all day, you’ll eat just about anything! A small group did have a tribal sort of meeting(no food, just water & cups on a table in the corner), which was unfortunate because they all stared when I walked through to use the restrooms. .GOD. If I’d have used the restroom first, I’d have walked out. It was dirty & dingy. There are two stalls, the first of which had ass gaskets and no toilet paper and the second had a single half-roll of tp but no ass gaskets. Ugh. At least there was soap and a roll of paper towels(not in the dispenser of course) so I could wash my hands and get out! The food was unmemorable but served in very generous portions. If you like it more than I did, you can get a takeout box for leftovers! The female owner seemed to be the hostess, waitress and cashier. I’m thinking this is a very small mom & pop operation. It’s really a shame our experience wasn’t better, she seemed quite nice. :(( We’re only in town 2 weeks & I’m hoping my next culinary adventure is more rewarding. Again, though, it could have been worse. I could have gotten sick sooo, 2 stars for that! Good luck!!!

WOWWOWWOWWOW… This is THE hidden gem of Oxnard. The chef is a gourmet chef who makes everything from scratch. If you order a Hamburger, he actually grinds the steak to make the ground beef. Love the food. Big fan of the Fajitas. They also have some of the best Fish and Shrimp tacos anywhere. Prices are good, and the service can be slow depending on the crowd. Make sure you call ahead to make sure they are open as I see a lot of private events being held here. Tip: Thursday nights they have a live hula dancing show. Warning: it takes forever for your food to come, so if you are hungry you may get mad. Service can be frustratingly slow.
