The place is terrible. The food was horrible and overpriced. I ordered a steak and couldn’t even eat it. Not sure what kind of meat it was, but it sure wasn’t beef. I have never had an experience like the one at Charlie’s. When I said something about the taste of my steak(tasted like it was really freezer burned) the manager/owner? Pretty much told me to leave and not come back. Great way to run a business. I don’t know how this place keeps the lights on. Update: 11−29−12 And now the lights are off. Good Riddance. Sorry Charlie, but your place sucked

Well, bust my buttons, the wife and I eat here 2 or 3 times a month, we like the home cooked meals, She loves the fried chicken! As we entered last night there was a new sign, telling us they were going out of business on Nov. 30th, 2011 after 40 years. We are sad to see this happen.

Any place that still uses cloth paper towel rolls and lava soap should know better than to dip whole catfish in batter before frying. What a nasty hellhole this is — whole catfish dinner 11.15WAY overpriced! And now I need a shower and I have the runs. Please! If anyone in the Pflugerville area wants to open a restauarant and offer fried chicken or fried catfish on the menu — get in touch with me first. Most restaurants that I have been to in Pflugerville take NO pride in their southern comfort foods! What’s up with that?!

My husband and I wanted to try someplace new and relatively inexpensive. So, we drove around and happened upon Charlie’s SH. We had the MIL and SIL in tow and said, what the heck. Well, when we first walked in, we were surprised to see the inside of this place. It almost looks like a storage unit or 1bedroom home was converted into an eatery. Let’s start with the waitresses. Holy smokes, these girls are not your standard servers. There were three total. Two had to be over 50 and the other looked like a teen or very early 20s. The oldest has white hair, hobbles, and appears to have a few teeth missing in the front. The one we had to serve us was nice enough, but didn’t seem to want to be there. She would take our order but didn’t offer anything in the way of service. She would only stop at our table if she was flagged down. That pisses me off. If I go to a restaurant to eat, I expect to be waited on. That’s the entire point of going out. We were seated quickly and our drink order was taken. Waters for everyone, except the MIL who wanted«sweet tea.» The waitress pointed out that they served tea and if you wanted it sweet, that there was sugar on the table. Alrighty then, rude much? So, we get our menus and start looking over the selection. The steaks are the priciest things and the hamburgers are the cheapest… pretty much the standard anywhere you go. Orders: H-The Lady’s Club with green beans, SIL-Cheeseburger no mayo MIL-Soup and the Saturday special(forgot what it was) and I had the chicken fried steak with fries. Our salads come out and they consist of two lettuce leaves(not cut up) and three pieces of tomato with dressing. Hmm… let’s just say our salads were edible but left a lot to the imagination. My husband said his steak was very tender and that was the only positive thing about it. He said it lacked flavor. My SIL had her burger put in front of her. No fries, no cheese. Just a plain burger. She had to send it back and the waitress looked as if my SIL had sprouted three heads when it was brought to the waitress’ attention. «Oh, ok, I’ll take it back.» She seemed to be personally offended that my SIL would complain about not getting any cheese. I’m thinking geez, all she got was a cheeseburger and it was messed up? Wow. My MIL said her soup was good but the rest lacked flavor. I have to say, my cfs was really good! I ate the entire thing. But I can’t understand why our plates were garnished with pickle slices. I could understand if I had asked for a burger, but I didn’t. My brother in law joined our party right after we had put in our orders. I had to flag down our waitress and ask for a menu so he could order because although she saw him, she acted as if she didn’t realize he intended to eat. He ordered the nachos. We all ate and were finished with our meals… no nachos. My BIL flags down the waitress and asked if she could just box them to go so that we could all leave together. «Oh, ok» He gets his check and still no nachos. We all get our check and even send it back to have it separated correctly… no nachos. She assures my BIL that they are«almost ready.» Finally, he gets his nachos and curiosity must have gotten the better of him. He opens his styrofoam box and he has maybe 15 chips with a small layer of beans, cheese, and one jarred jalapeño slice on each chip. Seriously!?! That took 30 minutes to concoct? I could have made that in two. That’s when WE got offended. The nicest person was the man ringing up the tickets at the register in the smoking section. I doubt we will ever be back, but I guess you never know until you try something.

I’ve passed by this place for years and today decided to stop in for lunch with a friend. We both ordered a chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. The food was decent, but not very memorable. I had to laugh a little at the clump of dill pickle slices that graced each side of my plate to add that green bit of garnish that others just do with parsley. The salad that came with the meal consisted of a bunch of badly chopped lettuce with a few tomatoes and then was smothered in salad dressing. We each had a slice of coconut cream pie, which wasn’t bad, but tasted like it had some sort of liquor in it. The thing that most bothered me was that you get your check at the table, but have to take it into a smoke filled bar in an adjacent room to pay out. The signs all over the place were a bit nutty too. All in all it wasn’t the worst place I’ve eaten, but it wasn’t the best either! Prices were kinda high for the quality of food they served. Thought about a steak until I saw that they were the highest thing on their menu. My Chicken Fried Steak, glass of tea and a slice of pie cost me a little over $ 13, which is a pretty high price for lunch within the Pflugerville area.

This place is as good as it gets! The folks are honest, hard working, good country folk. The food is reasonably priced, portions are pretty good sized, everything I’ve had there is delicious, the iced tea is great, and… they have an indoor smoking section! I used to go there every Thursday when I lived closer. I love the environment. From the old pictures of staff, owners, friends, family etc, to the trophy heads on the wall, to the neon beer signs, to the TV playing the big game… this place has got it! All in all, if you want good food, at a good price, from friendly staff and management, in a great environment … this is the place to go!

By far the creepiest place I’ve eaten in a long time. It looks like an old converted funeral home or church and it was eerily quiet the entire hour we were there even though there were at least 5 other parties there. The food was overpriced(think $ 10+ for chicken strips and fries that tasted like what I could get from a fast food place) and the service was incredibly slow. Between the bad service, off-the-mark prices and the feeling that the impersonators would soon crawl out of their host bodies and eat us alive, my husband and I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

We have been going to Charlie’s for years. When we first started going. everything from service to food was fantastic! When we entered the second time, the waitresses greeted us like we had been there a million times. Now after all these years, they greet us by name. Ann is a fantastic waitress and very personable. The last few times we have gone… we have been very disappointed. Some of the food was cold… and we know Ann didn’t let it sit in the back. The prices have gone outta sight… and when we paid the bill in the bar… roaches were climbing on the bar. Needless to say. and sadly.we won’t be going back. It seems that a place that cared about everything from its food to its customers. doesn’t care about either one anymore

#1 It’s the only place I know of where you can SMOKE and eat! My wife and I started going to Charlie’s a few years ago and it just happened to be on Turkey and Dressing day, my favorite! The place makes me think of a truck stop; nice people, low prices, and good food. Yes the salad is pretty basic, but you’re not going to get candied pecans, apple slices, prociutto and gorgonzola at a nice little family restaurant. I think the soup and the green beans are canned, so get the fried squash! You can swap it with the extras on your meal and it’s wonderful! The prices went up a few times recently, kinda sad.
