One of my favorite sushi places around Reno. They have baked rolls that are pretty unique and very tasty. I am pretty picky and there are plenty of options for someone like me or for someone with a huge taste pallet. The fish is always cold and fresh. Would be 5 stars if the service was a little bit better

Great food and service, the all-you-can-eat has great selections and the servers were extremely attentive. We had many items from the appetizers, sushi, and their awesome selection of hand rolls and long rolls. Our waitresses just made sure we had plenty of food the whole time we were there. Everything was fresh and tasty, I highly recommend this place!

I really liked this place! 1) customer service is amazing here Everyone is super friendly, VERY quick service and very helpful. 2) Good atmosphere, not too busy and crowded, but not dead either. But place is a bit small and they don’t have booth seating, only a few tables and bar seating. 3) sushi rolls are good,(Not the best I’ve had) but definitely tasty. They have a somewhat small variety if you only eat cooked/baked(not raw) sushi, there isnt much to choose from. But they have homemade ice cream, that is DELICIOUS! 4) They have a limit on the number of mussels you can order… probably the only reason I wouldn’t return here, mussels were also a bit bland… Overall this is a nice place with great customer service, but as I am a HUGE mussel fan, I dont like only being able to eat 4 mussels when you pay for AYCE. But if that isn’t important to you, then I would definitely recommend this place. Make sure to try their yummy ice cream!

I really wanted to like this place, like REALLY wanted to. It’s so close to my home, it could have been dangerous for my wallet. We’ve dined here twice, and both times service and quality seems to fall flat. Our first visit was just after their soft opening. A «soft opening» really should be called a flaccid opening… because you sorta get screwed out of some menu items, but still pay the hard opening price. They didn’t have octopus, didn’t have takoyaki, told us there were a few other items they didn’t have there yet… ummm, ok. We decided to roll with it. This location is their second… why open without the full menu offerings? The sushi was OK, and the chef was friendly and made us a special roll after we mentioned we were treating ourselves to sushi as our anniversary dinner… but for a relatively empty bar we had to ask for refills, never seemed to have our dishes cleared away… just lackluster service. This past visit was early lunch on a Fri, an impromptu visit at about 11:30am and we thought we missed the lunch rush. We had our 2 young kids with us, and were seated on the side dining room area. Maybe sitting at the bar isn’t an option with kids? By the time our order slip was finally picked up, I was beginning to regret it. The bar was getting a few more people, and a few more tables had been seated over in the Dining Room of the Forgotten. We waited a long time for our order. My kids’ bento finally arrived and the chicken(I had ordered teriyaki sauce on he side) was fairly burned. We were able to get a busser to pick up another order form, at this point we’d been there about 45 min and had not seen our server since the first order. Again, the sushi was just OK. The fish seemed thin and dry, but at least the rice matched the small portions. The ice cream is wonderful, but that was the best part of our meal. That’s not the way I imagined reviewing a sushi bar…“great ice cream!“ Thank you Sakana 2 for saving me from myself. We’ll stick with our old fave bar. There’s some pretty stiff sushi competition in Reno/Sparks. Banishing customers to a side dining room so the servers can avoid them won’t fly long with the finicky sushi fans here.

Best sushi in Reno hands down. The portions are large. They have alot of unique appetizers you cant find at other places as well as your normal appetizers. I usually dont eat rolls but they have such a great selection I had to try a few and they are great. They sear their tuna on the spot and the taste is amazing all I could say is wow. My server Topher was awesome his love for what he does truly shows. I found my new spot.

There’s a Sakana in Las Vegas that has amazing AYCE sushi offerings, so when I learned there was a Sakana in Reno/Sparks, I was eager to test it out. While I learned the two locations are not affiliated, the northern Sakana was as good as the southern one! Sakana’s sushi roll menu isn’t as extensive as some other places in town, but their appetizer menu is much more robust and features unique items. The Beach Ball, the Monkey Ball, and the french fries are must-order items. I’ve eaten there a couple times now and am always pleased with my meal. One thing I will note, though, is that the baked rolls are done a little differently here — the toppings on the roll are hot, but the rolls underneath are not, so it can be a weird temperature difference when you pop a piece in your mouth. Also worth noting is the AYCE ice cream that comes with your lunch/dinner. I’m not sure if the ice cream is made in-store or locally, but it is GOOD. They always have varying flavors, and some great ones I’ve had include birthday cake, butterscotch, and coconut. It can be hard to save room for dessert when binging on fish, but do yourself a favor and try!

I’m a sushi nut to start with. So I have pretty high expectations. Sakana Sushi met or exceeded them all. My wife and I decided to go here on date night, abs had the all you can eat dinner, for $ 25 a plate. My initial thought was that $ 25 was a bit spendy. But by the end of the night I was happy to pay it. We started off with appetizers, 2 come with each AYCE plate. I had the jalapeño pipettes poppers(delicious!) and the fire cracker, which is like a spicy tuna mash with tortilla chips. It was actually quite good. Then I moved on to the red dragon roll, which I ordered as a hand roll, but they brought as a long roll. I wasn’t complaining after the first bite. Spicy, fresh, flavorful, and I could really taste all the layers! Complex! We shared some nigiri, including salmon, tuna, seared albacore, octopus, and the unagi. All of the fish was very fresh, not the least bit fishy, and wonderfully flavorful. Even the octopus(tako). Perfect. We finished up, as I often do, with a spicy tuna hand roll. It was the best I’ve had. Made with chopped tuna instead of larger slices, I didn’t find myself fighting with the fish after getting through the seaweed. And the flavor was excellent(could have been a little more spicy, but I’m a pepper head), and the salmon wasn’t propped up with rice. It was all salmon! The service was excellent and friendly, even for the couple next to us who were complaining about everything. Yes, we’ll be back.

First time here. I think I’ve found a new sushi place! Good service, lots of variety. My favorite was the millionaire and my husband highly recommends the Philly and baby lobster.

I am not a fan! I have been here 2 times both of witch where not all that great. I feel like the staff is the majority of the problem. My chef today sadly falls into the not so good category. He was to pre occupied wth the what I assume where restaurants politics he service suffered. Not a single roll I ordered was made correctly, it took forever for him to get them made because he was everywhere but his station. One thing I would not want to be in Reno is a sushi joint! There are so many great ones the standards are very high. This one to me don’t meet the standard!

Picked up a to go order and they didn’t have the very best customer service even though they weren’t packed. I was so excited to try this place because of all the reviews and the pictures, but I guess I’ll try to original place or maybe no order to go? But that really shouldn’t matter. Very skimpy on the fish and rice was SUPER dry(so dry that it was very hard to chew). Update: currently sick in bed with food poising because of the sushi here. I didn’t even finish my entire order since it was really hard to eat.

Enjoy the original location, so we thought we would try the new spot. Bright lighting and nice décor. It doesn’t seem quite as big as the Sommerset location, and the tables are a little closer together. It might have a little more bar space. Four of us came in at 6 pm and were seated promptly. Service for the first half hour was good. Then got quite a bit slower as the restaurant filled up. To the point a roll and quail egg shooter has to be requested 3 times before it came. And we asked for dessert twice. Outside of service on a busy Friday night… the food was wonderful. And we had a LOT of food. We tried the miso soup, two salads, fried tofu and five different nigiri. We also are our way thru eight rolls. The lion king was wonderful and you can totally see where the name comes from. I personally loved the Crunch. The rice proportions were nice and small, the fish was generous and had great flavors. There were no fishy smells. Mussels were large and plump. Now if you have any possible room left, I highly recommend the coffee ice cream. I think it’s the best in town. Enjoyed this spot, but Somerset is closer for us.

It was nearly dead when my son and I came to Sakana on the recommendation of a friend. We sat at a table on the side of the sushi bar. I typically don’t write such short reviews but this is an exception because I don’t have much to say about it. Location is OK. Parking is OK. Interior ambiance is OK. Customer Service was OK. Sushi was just OK. Price for lunch was higher than most places at $ 22 and change which is what will keep me from coming back. Try it once and hopefully your more impressed.

Ok this is now become my favorite sushi place in town. The efficiency of the staff to get you seated, the sushi chef’s creating amazing, flavorful, tasty food. This place is in a strip mall by Winco and you know what? Who cares. It is super fresh, great plating, and worth every penny.

I like to think my commitment is strong. I’ve been in a relationship with the love of my life for around 9 – 10 years and my loyalty to my friends is ironclad, but if I was in a relationship with a sushi bar in Reno, without a doubt, I’d be one cheating SOB! Someone recently told me there are 39 sushi bars in the Biggest Little City, and there are more on the way! Talk about market saturation! One would think that would be a bad thing, and I’d tend to agree, but the reality is that it just drives the best to get better, pushing the mediocre out of the picture all together. Sakana Northtowne, the second location of the popular Sakana Somersett, is a prime example of this effort, and after 4 or 5 visits, they have yet to do anything less than wow me. Sakana is small and intimate. The main room is dominated by a U shaped sushi bar, with only a few high top tables, and adjacent is a smaller seated dining room with tables for those that prefer that experience. The service staff is pleasant and prompt, and the sushi chefs are on their game, effortlessly balancing orders from the tables and bar with great speed and efficiency. The entire team has smiles on their faces too, which means they enjoy serving the guests, and that’s a big deal! The menu here is perfect, with a great selection of nigiri, and mix of rolls that span a spectrum that includes raw, semi cooked, and deep fried rolls too, and most importantly, the fish to rice ratio in both nigiri and long rolls is easily the best in town. In fact, at most sushi spots I steer clear of long rolls and go right for the hand rolls, but Sakana is one of the few where I’m happy to order them because everything is in perfect proportions. The Somersett roll, signature Sakana roll, Wolfpack, and Pacific are amongst my favorites, but the yellowtail, albacore, seared tuna, unagi and uzura always make an appearance multiple times. They also have a fantastic caterpillar roll, which I enjoy as a hand roll, as well as a fantastic salmon skin hand roll that I don’t need to ask for extra crispy! Their signature sauces are great too, and work with the combos they’ve created vs. hiding the flavors. Pro-Tip: If you like it hot, ask for the house habanero sauce. You’ll love it! The menu also has a heap of interesting appetizers to supplement your sushi, and I really enjoy the dragon ball, which is Inari stuffed with spicy tuna and fried very quickly, so the tuna actually stays relatively uncooked! Another fave is the deep fried baby octopus. Think calamari but cuter! Really there’s nothing on the menu that I have not enjoyed, and on my last visit I found out that each chef has worked out 4 – 5 specials that are unique to them! On this last visit we tried a special torched tuna nigiri with smoked Himalayan sea salt that was bomb! Can’t wait to see what the other chefs have cooked up! With so many sushi restaurants, Reno must rank near the top of sushi consumed per capita, and I’m doing my part to contribute to that! Before giving it though, I wasn’t sure how we could support so many, but when they keep stepping up the sushi game like Sakana has, it’s pretty easy to see where the future of this beloved cuisine is headed!

Came in based on the stellar Unilocal reviews. Medium sized eatery in a strip mall. Table and sushi bar seating available. Loud top 40 music in the background. You can order a la carte or AYCE. Kids menu available. Nigiri was nothing special. Almost all of it was edible. The rolls were mainly different mashups using California roll, fish, and sauces. There were 3 sushi«chefs» and each one prepares the fish a little differently. Some interesting fusion style appetizers.(Okonomiyaki fries, monkey ball, beach ball, etc) Service was mostly good. One Chinese and one Caucasian waitress were friendly and helpful. This place has potential. Maybe they can work out the kinks in the near future so they can remain competitive with the countless AYCE sushi options in the area.

Yeah, this place is goooooood!!! I would give their sushi 4 stars, but because they have homemade ice cream that tastes amazing they get 5! Plus the excellent service! They’re a little more pricier than other lunch AYCE sushi joints but they offer a wider variety of appetizers like coconut shrimp served with a orange zest dipping sauce(amazing! I want more but I’m stuffed) I really enjoyed their tarantula roll, spicy tuna hand roll(with habanero sauce), wolf pack, sierra mountain, salmon nigiri. Godzilla was good too! But really, this homemade cinnamon ice cream and vanilla ice cream is soooooooooo good. I can’t even handle the taste buds right now. Its a party in my mouth and I want more! Yummy! Service is wonderful and the sushi chef is so helpful and inviting with having us ask for roll orders! I usually feel afraid to ask for rolls when I’m at the bar seating area because the chefs don’t conversate much at other locations. But I felt comfortable with ordering with the guys here! Our server was wonderful too, she was really sweet and attentive to clearing plates and timely too! Great food, great service and great ICECREAM!!! Yum!

Yet another sushi joint that has blessed the Reno area. And yes it is closest to my house also. We live in the north valley area so everything is far from us. And this is one of my favorite sushi places. I love their other location but it is absolutely far from me and anything else in town. Haha. So I know the owner again! And he is very very nice. When he saw us he greeted is right away and chatted with us for a little also. The unique rolls that we tried was amazing. There was one roll with salmon and lemon slices and that’s it. But it was our favorite. We tend to go more for the raw stuff. I’ll have to update my review when I get all the names to the rolls that we’ve tried. Im a bad Unilocaler for not knowing. And I apologize. The tobiko with quail egg is my absolute favorite everywhere I go and this place had black tobiko. Felt like I was eating a fancy caviar. The owner says he orders a better quality of fish which you can definitely taste. And if you smell the fish before you eat it you can also tell that way. So glad this place has opened and we have now found our go to sushi place.

I love the original Sakana… it’s just sooo far from my house. This one is thankfully a little closer. So here is another quality place for Sparks. The décor isn’t as upscale as the Northwest Reno location. But for me I don’t need an upscale décor, I just need good quality fish and unique rolls and a responsive chef. We have gotten that on both occasions that we have gone to this new location. Even the management did a great job of taking care of a tough situation. Breaks were given and then the whole place fills up with only one chef on staff! They gave us a heads up and told us they had called them all back. We didn’t even notice until they said something. This was our Thanksgiving/Son’s Bday dinner, so we had been prepared to spend some time there. We just told the chef what we like and he made us a bunch of rolls. I’m sorry that I don’t know the names of what we got, but if you are adventurous… try this out. You can get some really amazing rolls. I’m not sure how long they can keep up the quality here, but I’m totally impressed so far.

Sakana Sushi never fails to both impress and overstimulate my tastebuds. Though still in their«soft opening» they are pumping out fantastically fresh sushi like they have been open for years. By far the freshest fish in town. Clay, the owner, makes sure that the seafood is never fishy or soft. The price is a little higher due to the fact that they only use premium fish for their sushi. If you want the most impressive fusion of Japanese, and Korean spices and cooking, then this is the best place to try. I will definitely be returning.

I came in for lunch yesterday, planned only getting one or two rolls, but by the time that is ordered you are at the AYCE price of $ 19.99 for lunch… a lot pricey for lunch, which is one reason I have a lower star. I’m honestly not sure how the second location will fair considering a lot of the surrounding area on Wedekin and El Rancho are generally lower income neighborhoods. Granted the entire menu is offered, and they have a huge selection of appetizers(a lot fried though). And the place was fairly busy, with a lot of single tops, but the bar is a huge«U» and accommodating. The service was good, two waitresses who were on top of it, while the menu was explained to me, which was a little overkill. I know what AYCE is and can read what a lunch price is. Regardless, I had a fast sushi chef, Jesus, who was more than happy to make me a roll based on my selections. I tried only two rolls, Millionaire: cream cheese, cilantro, avocado and tempura shrimp topped with spicy crab and unagi sauce Somerset: cooked scallops and cucumber toped with spicy tuna, crispy onion, spicy mayo and unagi sauce I liked the millionaire the most, small bites with I prefer and hardly any sauce, which I prefer. I love cilantro so that pretty much seals the deal. The Somerset I didn’t care for as much, the mayo was a little strong for me on the scallop mixture and for some reason, I didn’t care for the cucumber in that combination. The fried onions were good, but the amount way more than I needed, I practically had a side of onion bites. After the rolls I had tuna nigiri, smaller slices of fish, BUT I preferred these little bit sized morsels actually where I feel like I’m not being slapped on the chin with fish or have a huge mouthful of fish and rice. But that’s just my opinion man. Another thing is most of the rolls are salmon or yellowtail, which is good, but I’m a tuna gal, so I either have to hunt them out or request substitutions. These are just little nuisances that aren’t probably going to be noticed by anyone else, but just things I noticed. The point is, will I be back? Well even though its a couple bucks more than most other places, I like the variety and the uniqueness, as well as the cleanliness and proximity to work. I feel like if I can get a good relationship developed with Jesus(or whoever), I’ll be even happier as that is a lot of the experiences at a sushi place.
