At a hospitality event, I met the manager of Freshens(not sure of which downtown location). Anyhoo, she told me all about the menu, and even suggested that I try the Kale smoothie. Now, I’m skeptical of all things kale… I’m guessing that if you deep-fried kale in bacon fat… it would still taste like foot callus. However, I did make my way in to one of their locations, and decided to try out this kale(aka: foot callus) smoothie. To my great surprise, it was delightful! It didn’t taste like feet at all! In fact, it almost tasted like a strawberry/banana concoction, but it was green! After drinking that smoothie, I felt great, and didn’t get my 2pm nap urges. I’ve been back a few times to pick up my green glass of goodness. It’s been great every time!

I was actually surprised by the other reviews since I really like Freshens. Whoever is reading this review, please keep in mind that Freshens is a chain of fast food, not a restaurant with food made to order! Staff: super friendly, always greeting you with a smile as soon as you walk into the restaurant. They make it clear when you order extra toppings for whatever you are ordering that there might me extra charges, so very nice, honest people! Food: I usually get their rice bowls, the Mediterranean one is my favorite. It is very flavorful, full of veggies(red peppers, lettuce, onions, tomatoes) and the hummus sauce is really good. I also love their chocolate frozen yogurt, it makes a great dessert! Bottom line is that I have always been very pleased by their rice bowls. Again, I am rating this place as the fast food chain that it is! And compared to McDonald’s, they are a five star French cuisine type of place to my eyes!!!

I debated on 2 stars because the crispy flatbread under my ceaser salas was delish. This cannot make up for the subpar service and food.

The staff is nice. This review is on the food, I don’t know about the frozen yogurt or smoothies. Menu is not very vegetarian friendly for one of us(had the brown rice thai bowl w no meat, extra veggies and was sparse on veggies) and the other person had a Tuscan turkey crêpe which is more like a wrap. She said it didn’t have much chicken and it was«edible» but she was hungry. They said they are about to open a new location in the subway next to Caribou Coffee.
