I went to this location this past Sunday morning to pick up a gift card. There was no wait and we were in and out in under 5 minutes. The cashier was friendly and allowed my boyfriend and I split the payment between us. I’ve been to this Academy on previous visits for gifts and it’s always been easy to find what we need and in my experience they always have enough cashiers to the point where your wait time is incredibly small.

My review and overall appraisal of Academy is based solely on going through their interview process… aka waste of my time. At the front of their new build on Bandera Rd I noticed a now hiring sign. As I am tired of working a corporate job I thought I’d give it a shot. I applied online for a loss prevention position and was called for an interview the next day. I am prior military with a martial arts background. I also have a spotless criminal history and great customer service skills. I felt as though I was custom fit for the position. The first interview was in a trailer that stunk of a porta potty with a young lady that’s name started with an F. Apparently the interview went well enough that I was scheduled a second interview at the stone oak location with a guy who’s name started with T. I arrived approximately an hour early to look over the store. In that time I found six different areas of easily fixed theft concern. But that was nothing in comparison to witnessing an internal employee/customer theft issue. I confirmed it was an issue because after the interview I saw the same employee and customer parked side by side in an adjacent parking lot with their trunks open exchanging merchandise. The interview went very well and it truly seemed as though I was being looked at rather favorably. There was no doubt in my mind I was more than qualified to have been a valuable asset to this company. I was rather surprised to have received the standard BS thanks but no thanks email. The sign on the trailer said they were hiring quality people. I assume what they meant are those completely lacking in customer service skills and thieves. I don’t mean all of this as a derogatory statement towards the company but I truly feel as though this was an age discrimination issue as I am somewhat over 25 years old and everyone in their employ are mainly just recently moved from their parents house. The store itself reminded me of a wanna be sports related K mart. Nothing impressive about it or those managing it. I’ll shop their competition.

My most recent visit to Academy my dad and I were looking for a pair of fishing gloves. We do a yearly trip down to Rockport and as we were checking our fishing gear we couldn’t find our usual gloves, so it was off to Academy. Sometimes I wish we were more than just once in a while fishermen. There is so much to experience whether you’re in saltwater or freshwater. So many tools and toys. Of course it’s always fun to look in all the areas of the store, no matter what you originally came for. We did find our gloves(after considering a couple of choices) and a knife to cut our bait shrimp with, so we were happy with our visit. It’s also where we get our fishing licenses. One stop shopping.

Worst store I have ever been to. Felt like I walked into a thrift store but with higher end prices. Customer Service, CRAPPY!!! Not one person acknowledge my family and I. Never returning here!

As far as Academy stores go, this location is my favorite. Quiet, clean, well-stocked, and there doesn’t seem to be a problem with car break-ins like some of the other locations in town. I encountered really great customer service, and plenty of willing and helpful staff. Definitely a great place to get good Spurs gear, camping supplies, hunting gear, fishing goods, workout equipment, and almost anything you might need for your sporting needs. I was very happy to find they had a decent selection of dance gear as well! I doubt there’s much the sports enthusiast inside you won’t find here!

I agree with the other reviewer. This is a clean and quiet store. And even though it probably gives away my fashion sense(or lack thereof), I do most of my shopping here. Running shoes, hiking boots, tees, shorts, I even picked up my official UTSA cap here yesterday. Return policy is no muss and no fuss. I especially like not being bombarded by sales folk. But when you need something, they are always available and helpful. One odd thing about this place is the cashiers; for some reason they always seem to be impersonal and aloof. Not like they are swamped with people at the check-out. Not getting that. But I don’t go there for an an encounter session, so ce’st la vie, but –1 star.

A clean, quiet store. This Academy is usually well stocked, has knowledgeable associates who are always willing to help out. The first place I go when I’m looking for quality outdoors equipment.

Great location!!! Never too busy and I always find an open register. A great place to find bullets, especially when other stores are sold out!!!
