I’ve always enjoyed Freds spot. Great music and cool crowd. Not all stuck up, just real people trying to have a good time. People say it’s ghetto but it’s very rare that I’ve seen any fights or anything out of the norm. Even the bouncers are nice. They don’t act like dicks like most bars. Male bartenders should smile more, but other than that great music and good vibes

Worst place in downtown I highly don’t recommend this place from security to the lame very not professional owner. Its the new Toonz. Security which take their jobs way to serious they are their own gang and including Freddy who would like to be them he does not worry about being professional. Their customers are 3x worse so ghetto and ready to fight everyone !

Freddie J’s is a pretty ill(ill as in cool) bar and lounge in Downtown San Jose. I first went here on one of the beer routes I use to do throughout San Jose. The owner here just like ones at other establishments told me to come in and check it out outside my working schedule. So I did and this place didn’t dissapoint, at least not in my experience. The crowd here is the«Grown and Sexy» crowd. So many people looking like they’re having fun, getting turnt up, and just all around having a great time. The music has always been on point here for me. Mostly Hip Hop and R&B, with stone of the 90’s hits thrown in there for good measure. For my style of djing on a personal level, this would be a great place for my skill. If you’re into pop and most top 40 music and edm. you wouldn’t have much luck here. The bathrooms are atrocious, outta the 4 years I’ve been coming here, seems they’ve gotten progressively worst, I just hope the women’s one isn’t as horrible. My reason for the one less star. The bartenders are a hit and miss, sometimes they’re on point and other times they aren’t. I’ve experienced a bartender make my drink right one time and then crappy the next… the drink was the same btw. In conclusion, great people, great music, might be a little to hood for some, but I feel right at home there! Be your own judge and Unilocal about it if you go.

Had a blast tonight! Thank You Robert for your hospitality and good vibes. I will be coming more often. Plenty of space and the outdoor area is awesome to just take a break. The music is kickin’. Security staff is really friendly. The only thing is the women’s restroom needs a facelift. Other Han that very hot spot.

Not very big. The music was a very specific kind of hip hop /R&B, like all the songs from popular artists that never made it to the radio.

Greatttttt. Happy this is where we will hold my wife’s 40th bray party. They pour heavy. The music is 90 – 2000 hip hop and r&b. What else can you ask for.

Freddie J’s discriminates against Lesbians that choose to dress as men!!! I will never go to this place again! I’ve been to the spot a few times and enjoyed I’ve been to the spot a few times and enjoyed myself! I’ve heard people say bad things about the place and have always defended it due to the fact it is African American Owned and I am a African American Woman. I always try to uplift, however; this is one time when my objective to uplift and support has to take the back seat! I was appalled and disgusted by my experience! My brother, sister and I decided to step out as a family and have a good time; we chose Freddie J’s because it’s local and as I stated before I’ve always had a nice time there. My sister is an Lesbian woman who is most comfortable dressing as a man. She had her hair braided going back; wearing a pair of Seven Jeans, a Polo Style shirt, and a pair of Jordens. While in line I observed the owner looking at us and thought nothing of it. My brother and I were in line In Front of my sister handed security our ID’s and entered into the club, we waited by the door for my sister and noticed she was having some difficulties with a man whom I later was informed is the owner. I approached him and politely asked if I could speak with him, he then turned to my sister and said«no matter what she says to me, you’re not getting in.» I asked him what was going on, he said; «her pants were hanging to low» my sister then said to him«I pulled them up, please let me in man.» Mr Freddie J replied«no because you are who you are when you approach the place!» This was appalling because anyone who has been inside of Freddie J’s knows there is always a really mixed crowd… Mixed with all types of people from different walks of life. In fact; this is why I’ve had to defend the«Black Owned» establishment in the past! Because there is sometimes a seedy crowed. But, as I stated before I believe in the whole uplifting movement. I asked Mr. Freddie J what the problem was. He said«her pants were hanging too low» I then said«she pulled them up» he then stated«there is nothing you can say, she is not going in!» I then said«wait a minute, I’m having a hard time understanding what’s going on, what is it about her that has you feeling so strongly about not letting her in?» Freddie J replied with the same statement«nothing you say is going to make me let her in.» Feeling very frustrated but still remaining calm and polite, I asked; «what is it about her that offends you to the point that you refuse to budge.» Mr. Freddie J continued to say he wasn’t going to change his mind. I then said«this is strange, it seems like you’re offended by her, what is it?» Mr. Freddie J looked at me and said” she’s not offending me, you’re offending me with what you’re saying.” I replied«how can you be offended by a legitimate question, it’s cool; you have a nice night.» I then signaled my hand to my brother and sister so we could leave. I guess maybe something clicked in his mind because about 30 seconds later he was trying to stop us from Leaving… He kept saying«wait a minute, lets hold a grow up conversation!» I replied«no thank you, we’re leaving.» We were all disturbed by what happened! I honestly believe Mr. Freddie J has a problem with Lesbian woman who choose to identify as a man! It was the most disgusting and disturbing situation I have experienced all year! I will never return and I will share my experience with everyone who mentions the name Freddie J! This is 2015 discrimination of any sort is illegal and morally wrong! In addition we had just left out the club to grab cigarettes from the car. Security let us in the first time and Mr. Freddie J refused the second! You draw your own conclusion and patronize an anti Lesbian club if you’re comfortable with it.

Do not confuse this with the ‘Back Bar’. Even though they share a hallway, and restrooms, the experience is totally different. Bad music, bad décor, Bartender was pretty clueless… They obviously don’t get very busy since the bottles were still wrapped with plastic on the tops at 7:30 to 8:00 at night. I shall not return!

5 stars is an understatement for Freddie Js, friendly staff, 90s-00s rnb and rap which bring back nostalgia of my youth, occasional free drinks and fine Latina women! Freddie Js is the club everyone ends up at even if it’s not the club they start the night out at!

The starting point of a drinking night. It has a good location as its at one end of dtsj. Add in knowing the bartender and there you go. Pre drinking is no longer a necessity. Sure it saves you a few bucks but you kinda miss out on the public drunkenness that dtsj has to offer.

I came here last weekend and saw the security guard in the front SUCKERPUNCH this poor guy in the face. I was standing right by them and witnessed the entire thing. I mean, this is the kind of thing that should be captured on cell phone to keep proper record as it truly was unbelievable. The customer was waiting on his friends to come outside as he stood in the front and kind of just talking shit, but to himself. He was faded but duh it’s a bar and that is what people come to do. All of sudden, literally out of nowhere this poor guy gets socked in the face by SECURITY. I was so disgusted and frightened with this behavior. I mean, security is supposed to be there to diffuse situations in a professional manner. The security guard never even said a word to the guy, he just socked him!!! I am absolutely terrified to ever come back here again, who knows what their staff will do next? I am sure it gets much worse than just the small incident that I saw. I will pass!

I went here on Halloween and it was a lot of fun! The bar was packed, people were having fun and it was a great time. There were two things that happened to make me never come back to this place. 1. I was dancing and having a great time and some man came up behind me and grabbed my arm super hard. He told me to «Get the fuck out of the way» and stared me down. The fact that security wasn’t vigilant on Halloween makes me not feel safe about going to this place, especially because this happened INSIDE. 2. Freddie J himself was tending bar. He was visibly serving only his friends. I was waiting at the bar with a $ 20 bill in my hand. He passed over me several times. I was waiting for about 20 minutes. My friend came up and he almost immediately served her. I asked him what was up with that and he told me to calm the fuck down or I’d be thrown out. To have an owner with such a ridiculous ego is insane. He needs to tone it down and buckle up, or else more people will never come back. You just lost a patron.

Second time visiting this bar; my most recent experience was terrible!!! I think that Freddie himself represents his establishment well. He is very mindful and courteous to his patrons, but his staff definitely needs a customer service seminar. I understand that working in the service industry can cause a person to become jaded but Jesus Christ to be all out rude for absolutely no reason, is way uncalled for. From the attitude from the security guy checking IDs and purses to Solomon the jerky bartender, I was over it!!!

We hosted a San Jose State University Homecoming party at Freddie J’s. The venue appears to be small but quite nice. The DJ was good but he didn’t have the«Wobble» which is a line dance for those over the drop it like its hot /hip hop era. Overall it was fun and we plan on hosting other events in the near future.

I’ve been here twice, service wasn’t to great and a lot of that nasty dirty dancing business going on. Not my type of crowd. Not letting anyone talk me in too going here again. It’s gross.

That staff is all really cool. They don’t short you on the drinks. Good music. We need more hip hop clubs like this.

Freddie’s.what a chill hood bar. I love coming here because of the music. They play hip-hop and RNB all night long! The crowd is not very diverse and it seems like a lot of regulars make up this bar, which is a good sign! Also, the bar tenders are very friendly. It gets packed after 11 p.m. on weekends, so don’t come too early. The bouncers are pretty cool with the line too. totally unpretentious like some other DTSJ spots. If you’re looking for a chill place with good music, then this is your bar.

«Freddie J’s has some pretty ratchet ass hoes,» our hero was told by his friend before he went for the first time. Indeed, the venue did not disappoint in that regard. It’s pretty dead before 10PM, but after such time, it gets crunk and cramped with a fairly urban crowd that doesn’t seem to adhere to any kind of dress code. There’s 3 main areas here: the main bar, the dance floor, and the outside patio. The main bar is the first place you walk into after the entrance and barely has any room at the bar to order a drink on the weekends. The dance floor behind the bar is filled with some booty shaking girls and a 3:1 ratio of dudes trying to grind up on them and literally SHOUTING at them with catcalls and solicitations. The only tolerable part of the joint is outside, which has a bar and is reasonable enough to have a conversation at. Come decked out in your Yankees caps and jerseys and come for the LOLs. PROS: — No cover, even on weekends. — They play pretty much all the recent Top 40 and 90’s hits the other clubs play, so the music is «good», or at least comparable to any other place one would visit in downtown San Jose. CONS: — Crowd there is a bit rough around the edges. — Gets pretty crowded late night and hard to order a drink at the bar. — Drinks are somewhat pricey for a place of this caliber. Definitely closer to prices you’d pay at a half decent club for a drink.

I used to come here a lot when it was Mission Ale House and WOW has it been seriously upgraded! I love the new feel to this place. The outdoor patio is huge and is a great place to hang out during these hot summer nights. The indoor lounge area has this great big couches that are super comfortable! Restrooms need a little more upgrading but they are still doing some construction. Drink prices were reasonable for downtown SJ. Around 8 bucks for well drinks. It would be cool to see Hookah offered here. It has that vibe to it. I heard that there is some questionable activity here like a lot of bar fights but I didn’t experience any of that. There were a ton of bouncers but maybe that is why… lol
