This is an interesting spot. It is very, very, very casual. The food is the real deal, the prep is questionable. There are basically two kitchens at this location. One is inside next to the seafood market where it appears that they have the usual suspects as far as a café. The next kitchen is located outside under a rain tarp, where most of the food is fried and prepped. Not sure that this portion of the kitchen would pass a health inspection with flying colors… The food was pretty good. I would say this place is worth a an adventurous visit, or at least stop by for fresh seafood market.

We just got off a sailing day trip in Greenport and were looking for a nice place to eat. I found Commander Cody online and the reviews looked very interesting. We decided to take the ferry across and give it a try. OMG, it was just like the reviewers said! We loved it! It was VERY different then what I expected but the food was great and atmosphere was fun. I would recommend it you are looking for a interesting place to try. Keep a open mind and you will love it. By the way Peaches rocks!

Very disappointed, my mother saw the following on the local new channel 3 years ago. Every year since she wanted to visit for her birthday! FINALLY we made it, she was so excited even though the hours were from 12 — 2 for lunch and 4 — 9 dinner she wanted to get there early just because. So we decided to take the 2 hours drive just to celebrate the big day arrived at 2 no problem lunch was over. So we will have dinner instead which started at 4:00 pm NOT!!! Came back for 4:00PM dinner services to wait another hours because they are not taking dinner order until 5:00PM. So once again, making my mother happy it’s her BIG Day… we waited to find out what she heard so much about the BBQ Rib will not be ready until after 8:00(really). To make a long story short my mother did not eat at all because she is allergic to shell fish. My suggestion please DONOT take a special trip. If you are a local resident or have a vacation home go for it. My father ordered the Seafood platter for $ 20.00 which is the going rate, I ordered pull pork to GO(this is very hard to find up North, now I can say it was delicious) however I just order to go to make a sandwich when I go home now that was $ 12.00. Now I am disappointed because I asked for Cole Slaw ½ pound which should have been $ 2.25 but when I arrived home it was red potatoes salad SMH now. Can someone explained to me how my bill was $ 39.95 I did not realize it until my mother question the tally. Too late now on the ferry headed back home. «The best time of the trip the view.» Word of advise to the OWNERS, time management. I know you have your regular customers, but you would have gain more. I was so ready to spread the words.

Picked here because of the reviews. It was 5:30 on a Saturday You pull up and it looks like a run down property. Actually to be more honest — it looks like a junk yard. Confused as to where you enter. Finally find the door and then can’t figure out what goes on here. Do I sit? Do I order? Do I get my own food? Woman in front of me helps me out — tells me what to do — you order than sit. They bring it out. We wait about 30 minutes for our turn to order. While waiting I here these monstrous order being called in for chicken and ribs. My turn to order — I ask the woman«what are you known for» Chicken and Ribs So that’s what I order. Picked a table outside and opened a bottle of vino. We did drink the entire bottle before the food came out. The food was amazing. Ribs? Best I’ve ever had. Chicken was obviously fried in oil so hot that it wasn’t greasy at all. Cornbread — Excellent Fries? Excellent. I normally don’t eat fries — these were so good. The food was amazing. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Okay, We went back and had fried chicken and pulled pork. ‘Can’t speak for the pork, but the fried chicken is as good as others say… woohoo! Jim is a sweetheart, but the women on the line seem needlessly gruff. Yes, it is brutal work in the heat… but geez, is that the customer’s fault?

If like me you find The Hamptons way too busy, and wonder why the hell you left Manhattan since most of the Upper East Side seems to be gunning around in BMW SUVs, Commander Cody’s is the place for you. Nice simple food, complete lack of ‘hey how ya doing service’, and off the beaten track.

Not to be missed — ever! The seafood and fried chicken are incredible. This place beats to their own drum… great value proposition, everything is made to order, things move slowly. Super hospitable, go now! Enjoy!

What can I say about the Experience at Commander Cody’s; fun time, byob, good food, great prices in a relaxed almost Caribbean resort town feel. Commander does smoked ribs like no body’s business! Smokey, fall off the bone meat and a delicious sauce. Some of the best ribs I have ever had. The Fried Chicken is phenomenal, crispy outside with tender juicy chicken on the inside. So good and on day 2, even better with a nice glass of Lieb Cab-franc(at the vineyard for a leftovers picnic lunch). We also had some fried sea scallops that were right off the docks fresh as could be delicious. Also, a little day 2 magic with these as well– tender and almost sushi like. You can’t beat the value of this wonderful long established down home eatery and take out market. Just great food in an extremely relaxed laid back island like environment. Don’t be shy, make sure you try this local spot when your on Shelter Island.

Excellent seafood. Warm and friendly atmosphere! We had an amazing fish n’ chips! The lady commander is very sweet and funny. We ordered to go and had to wait 50min but the wait was definitely worth it!

This place is nothing fancy and you certainly shouldn’t go if you’re looking for ambiance — this is really more of a take-out spot. That said, the food is really good and the prices are very reasonable. I recommend any of the soups(the spicy tomato lobster bisque is delicious), the smoked fish dips, the fried chicken, fried scallops and anything from the fish counter. Their one consistent weakness is the french fries, which are just not very good.

Rented a house just up the road from Commander Cody’s and wasn’t sure what to expect. Answer is, great prepared food and an amazingly well-stocked fresh fish counter. Ate here for dinner the first night, we arrived late in the evening after a day’s travel and the fried seafood combo was just perfect. Biscuit, hot sauce, Cole slaw, delicious. Came back for lunch, had shrimp cocktail and fish/chips. Our toddler loved it, if you have kids you understand how crucial that is. We bought all of our fresh fish for home cooking throughout the week there as well, and let me tell you, the quality ranks with anything I’ve eaten from Manhattan to Maine to San Francisco to Sicily. Swordfish, snapper, oysters… Not sure what I’m buying tonight but I bet it will be good. As far as the service, listen. This is a small family-run operation, if you make an effort to be friendly and understanding you’ll be rewarded with sweetness and good service. If you blow in here acting like the King or Queen of England, well… you might get the treatment you deserve.

Amazing is all I can say. Great food. Nothin’ fancy for eat in. In particular, I recommend the smoked fish for sale inside at the register. On busy weekends, place take out orders hours in advance and get there early to pick it up. The place is no longer off the radar.

Peaches is a doll. She creates a hospitable and fun environment which compliments the food delectably. The ribs are soft, flavorful, and peel off the bone with ease. The shrimp is fresh, meaty, and with that spicy cocktail sauce, whoooo nelly! Last, but undoubtedly not least, are the oysters. I haven’t had oysters as good as I did tonight in years: fresh, clean, thick, and large; just how I like them. It was an exercise in gluttony that I welcome again and again.

Been eating from the Commander my whole life. The fried shrimp are legit and all of his seafood is super fresh. Yea, it might take a while if you are ordering prepared food, but that is just how island life goes.

I have a vacation home on Shelter Island and live close by to Commander Cody’s Seafood. Consistently find the freshest fish and seafood. I stopped by recently and Cody filleted a bluefish in front of me. Also purchased some fresh scallops. Both were perfect for dinner on the grill. The seafood is fresh, local and a great value for the dollar.

Great and amazing food(seafood, chicken, ribs, etc.). I’ve never had something that is bad. Sometimes the staff is a little disorganized, but they are very accommodating and it’s worth it for what you get. Also, don’t attempt to eat there; this is a take out place most definitely.
