Had dinner at Preview with a friend and did the tasting menu. Really excellent progression of dishes with some exceptional highlights that I’ll mention below. The wok smoked edamame with kimchee butter was not your typical edamame and I really couldn’t stop eating it. The spice and salt combination was just so addicting. The hiramasa amuse bouche was so bright and well seasoned. Excellent intro to the rest of the meal. This was followed with another hiramasa dish, that despite using the same fish, was just vastly different. Thai basil, pickled red onion, szechuan oil, and pomegranate made for a perfectly balanced dish. Truly sublime. The house smoked salmon was perfectly smoked and the addition of mustard seeds was really exceptional. The ceviche chips n dip was so inventive and really delicious. This dish was like a combination of fish and chips and ceviche taken to a whole new level. The day boat scallops and gnocchi were so delicious as well. The scallops were beautifully cooked, the gnocchi were delightfully crispy, and the truffle oil added just the right amount of earthiness to tie the whole dish together. I generally find truffle oil to be kind of superfluous, but it really added to this dish. The geoduck with szechuan oil and green apple was so fresh and showed chef Jason’s ability to really understand his ingredients. I don’t know that another protein could have held up to the rest of the elements of the dish so the geoduck was a really smart choice especially for its texture. Overall just a really delicious and well thought out menu with obvious care for the details that make a meal great.

Fine dining in Sugar Land! In a city filled with chain restaurants geared toward families with kids and generally mediocre food, Preview stands out as a hidden gem nestled in an Asian shopping center surrounded by cheap Chinese restaurants. The location is a bit unfortunate, as they deserve way more business than they get, and the local demographic just isn’t suited to support an adequately large clientele. The food at Preview is excellent. I ordered the tasting menu and a few extra items for two people, and enjoyed everything. My favorite was the Chilean sea bass. It was seared to perfection, juicy and buttery, and was simply divine in conjunction with the miso butter it was served with. They’re still experimenting, tweaking their menu, and working out kinks, so there were some minor issues with a few of their dishes. The crème brûlée was slightly burnt and the green curry-based«clam chowder» was rather too spicy. That being said, they’re very open to feedback and I commend them for being willing to take risks and experiment. I’d much rather have that and a few occasional misses than the same old boring dishes over and over again. Especially since they only have a staff of two, these minor hiccups are more than forgivable. Perry was our server(and also prepared some of our dishes!). He was very friendly and attentive and provided excellent service. He explained each of the courses very well and overall helped to make the dining experience excellent. I will definitely be going back to Preview and want to encourage more people to go as they definitely deserve more business. It was the best dining experience I’ve ever had in Sugar Land, and I’ll be sad to see them go if/when they move to Houston, but they probably need to do so to survive.

My fiancé made a reservation for dinner on NYE for my sister and I. The waitress was sweet and the atmosphere was quaint and classy. They gave us champagne that was on the house. The menu was less than one page and had limited choices. I quickly assumed since there were limited options that all of the dishes would be exceed my expectations. Two of the dishes that I wanted(Ceviche and Japanese Yellowtail) and also two beers that my fiancé requested were not available. This was after the host declared that the Ceviche was her personal favorite dish at Preview. For appetizer we had the yellow tail wonton. It came out with 4 on the plate. The wonton was EXTREMELY fishy. I would give it a 2⁄5. We ordered the smoked salmon on the cold menu which the waitress brought out in 3 individual bowls. Inside the bowls were a thin fillet of smoked salmon that was the size of a nickel. I was confused as to how many usually come in an order but apparently it costs $ 15 for 3 tiny pieces of smoked salmon. Our third dish was the lobster bisque. It came with 4 nuggets that sat in a very minimal amount of bisque. This is not the average cup of bisque(soup) one usually expects. This bisque was $ 19 and I have to say NOT worth it. Our fourth dish was the sea scallops which was $ 18. It came with 4 scallops that sat on a bed of sweet potato gnocchi, bacon, and truffle oil. This was the best dish. I give it 3⁄5. It was cooked and flavored well. The scallops didn’t blow me away because it wasn’t unique but it wasn’t bad. We asked for the check because I did not see any reason to want to try the last 3 dishes. If you try this place don’t come hungry. Plan to get semi-full off the mediocre bread first to lower you hunger pains since the food comes out VERY slowly(our waitress told us we don’t have the option to have all our plates come at once). I would recommend this restaurant for anyone whose taste buds are easy to please and does not mind spending money on expensive fine dinning appetizers that are presented beautifully. DONOT take a hungry girl here for your first date!

We went on a Friday night at 6 pm and were the only couple there for 2 hours. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the wait staff very attentive but unfortunately the recent is very high end for a grocery strip location. They advised us that it was a tasting menu and there was also a la carte menu. The tasting menu is $ 65 dollars for about 5 courses. The al carte items average around $ 16 – 18 dollars. We tried 2 cold and 2 hot/warm dishes which were plated very well and also the taste was delicious. The chef gave us an amuse bouche for free… yum. I want this restaurant to make it but they need to have some less expensive items to build clientele. The food is flown in and is delicious but the ambience of an empty restaurant is a little weird and the menu is 2 pages in total. I love that the menu is fresh and it reminds me of Uchi’s but it’s not as popular.

I have this problem where I love good quality food that’s both creative and constantly new. There are few«mom and pop» or small-business owned restaurants that can provide this, but I’m not satisfied with chains or franchises either! I think Preview is one of very few restaurants who can do the quality, creativity, and innovative aspects of food well… love it! We had about 8 different dishes(family style, my favorite) and honestly, I have no clue what they were called but I can tell you that my favorite was the yellowtail dressed on the thin cracker(similar to a crostini?). My BF was a chef for a long time and his standard of good food is far beyond mine. I have taken him to some of my «favorite» restaurants and he has torn them(in private to me only) apart in the freshness and quality of the fish, the meat, etc. Even HE was raving about this place. We also really enjoyed the staff. The owner is a very good friend of mine(I’ll be honest!) but the rest of the staff was new to me and the server was awesome about the descriptions, including background and inspiration of each dish and how/why it was created. I think his name was Steve(n)??(Sorry, dude). But he was great!

Preview is redefining suburban dining and making Sugarland a destination city for dining. Located in a very ugly Asian strip shopping plaza, Preview transports you to another world once you walk through the doors. First off, and I cannot stress this enough… Preview is not a sushi restaurant. I made that mistake when I promised my daughter yellowtail sushi. I did order the yellowtail crudo on the menu(which may not be there since the menu changes often) and it was awesome(just not sushi). The restaurant is very small and very intimate, which means it isn’t the greatest place to bring kiddos. With that said, I decided to bring mine anyways. They were very accommodating, providing a makeshift high chair and semi-kid friendly food. Reservations are an absolute must and can be made on OpenTable. The tasting menu is unique… and offers options that aren’t on the regular menu. Unlike other restaurants, they do not require the entire table to order the tasting menu. Preview is a must if you live in Sugarland and a must visit for out of towners. In short… make this a dining spot in the very near future. Just don’t walk in thinking it’s a sushi joint!

+unique dishes +craft beers +sparkling sake(I could drink gallons of this stuff. Gallons) +North American Day Boat Scallop Carpaccio +Blackened Hawaiian Blue Marlin +Canadian Lobster Bisque with Miso +Miso Marinated Alaskan Ivory King Salmon +Ceviche Chips N’ Dip –skip the Nobu«surf and turf» The restaurant is small but well designed and intimate. We were seated right away in a booth with the table already set up for my parents and I. Service throughout the night was personal and attentive, but it was a fairly slow Sunday night for them. I went ahead and got the 6 course tasting menu while my parents ordered a la carte. They do change the menu frequently and they have an experience saucier coming up with fresh ideas as well. I’ll start with my tasting menu review first. 1)Hawaiian Mako Shark — Never had shark before, but this one was a meaty chunk sprinkled with crispy ginger and served next to some XO sauce and szechuan pepper corn. The shark had a firm meat-like texture and mild flavor — no ammonia here. 2)North American Day Boat Scallop Carpaccio — Fantastic dish, probably my favorite. The thinly sliced pieces of scallop, topped with gelatin, was delicate and wonderful with the fragrant basil oil. The pieces of green apple added a nice crunch to the dish. 3)Kimchi Cured Ora King Salmon — Not my favorite as I thought the strong flavor of the peach kimchi overpowered the delicate salmon, which itself was very nice. 4)NZ Langoustine Gumbo — A hearty and tasty dish that may have you licking at the bowl. The langoustine looks like a cross between a shrimp and a lobster and it tasted like that as well. 5)Miso Marinated Alaskan Ivory King Salmon –A very tasty and balanced dish — the slight crunch and taste of the white asparagus(I thought it was bamboo shoots at first) complemented the salmon nicely 6)Pecan, hazelnut, orange chocolate tart tasting — a trio of small desserts. It was good, but I’m not much of a dessert person so I can’t comment much about desserts. A la carte items: Ceviche Chips N’ Dip — An excellent cold dish Blackened Hawaiian Blue Marlin — It’s served with corn purée that was pleasantly sweet and creamy — try spreading it on your bread. The marlin was delicious as well. Definitely try this dish. Canadian Lobster Bisque with Miso — Lobsters were fried into little nuggets and the bisque was cooked down to a very thick soup. Not a large portion, but incredibly delicious and a unique take on what otherwise would be a very common dish. Hot smoked north pacific albacore — They smoke their fish in-house and it imparts a subtle smokey flavor without too much salt. Albacore tuna isn’t as fancy(nor endangered) as bluefin tuna but this dish is perfectly good as-is. North American Day Boat Scallops — Scallops perfectly seared at the top and bottom. No complaints here — if you like scallops, you will like this. Nobu — inspired«new style» surf and turf — This was unfortunately the only dish that I did not enjoy. It consisted of some ground wagyu beef served on slices of scallop and then barely cooked by pouring hot oil over it. I thought the flavors of this dish didn’t blend well at all — the oil and the peach emulsion didn’t do it any favors either. Skip this one dish. Conclusion: It’s inevitable for me to draw conclusions between this and Uchi, which is more well-known and also one of my favorites. I think Preview stands out on its own and offers unique and tasty dishes. Unlike Uchi which has several non-seafood dishes, Preview is almost strictly seafood with only 1 – 2 meat dishes. The only downside that I can find is that, like Uchi, it can get quite expensive. Give this restaurant a try however — it’s a gem in an unassuming shopping center. The ingredients here are fresh and of the highest quality. If its location was more ideal, I’m confident reservation would be much harder to come by. I will be coming back, and bringing friends.

Preview Modern Seafood was a unique experience. Even though the portions are a lot smaller than I had expected, the quality of the food made up for it. I would definitely frequent this restaurant, if I live closer.

Hidden Gem! We decided to try Preview as we had read about it in a local magazine. We were pleasantly surprised. The service was very friendly. We had many courses and each was delightful and fresh. All of the seafood was prepared and presented perfectly. The chef is a seafood master. I would now choose Preview over Uchi or Kata Robata. The plates are small but it gives you the chance to try many different dishes. the dessert was outstanding. cheers to the pastry chef! we will be back.

We went here for my Hubs’ 36th birthday and enjoyed our experience. We double dated with another couple so we had an opportunity to try a variety of dishes. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu and shared(that’s the kinda place this is). At the time it was also BYOB and they did not charge a cork fee so that was also a plus. We came on a weekday and we were the customers all evening. Their location is a bit far for us but becasue of the write ups and their menu we thought it was worth the drive. I’ll only mention our favs and unfavs. Favs: Ceviche Chips N’ Dip. The snapper chips were awesome! This dish is definitely worth trying and sharing. Another cold dish that we enjoyed was the Hawaiiian Pomfret«Tiradito»(there is a pic below of it). Our favorite hot dishes were the seared scallops(see photo) and smoked yellow tail with apple tortellini. These two dishes were perfectly cooked with the right balance of texture and ingredients. The other dishes that were good but not our favs were the«KFT»(Fried Tuna-see photo), lobster bisque and octopus. The KFT was lacking salt(as was a couple other dishes we tried that aren’t mentioned). The bisque is not actually a bisque but rather a croquette in a little bit of cream sauce. And the octopus was rubbery. This was actually on the tasting menu but because we really wanted to try it the chef made us a complimentary dish. We really appreciated the kind gesture but the octopus(for me) missed the mark. It was also lacking salt. However, the other members of our group really enjoyed it so maybe it is worth trying. I believe Preview will do well because of their innovative concept. It is not often you find American cuisine prepared raw. Usually this type of food is bathed in Asian concepts. For that reason alone it is a restaurant worth trying.

Really enjoyed a nice, fancy meal here. They are going for the small seafood plates like Uchi. It’s modern seafood, but not sushi. It’s good for special occasions(birthdays, anniversaries, new job), but it’s quite expensive to make this a regular thing. We came out of there paying about $ 70 per person when you add up tip and tax. Food. Great presentation and most plates were really delicious if not amazing. They start you off with some super yummy pretzel bread and homemade butter. I just want to make pretzel bread now! They also provide you with a complimentary tasting bite of some fish and chip. Ceviche. Must get this one. So fresh and the scallops was one of the best part of the meal. Lobster bisque. Four lobster ‘nuggets’ with Nice crunchy texture on the outside and good chunks of lobster in the inside. The gravy has amazing lobster flavor and takes 2 days to prepare. Scallops. Four delicious scallops with cute and tasty sweet potato gnocchi. Also a must have. One tasting menu — $ 59 — includes 5 tastings, one of them being dessert. First one, mushroom 3 ways. Loved it. Surprisingly good. Second was the kingfish sashimi. It was just okay. Nothing to rave about. Third was the prawn gumbo which was also okay but I wasn’t really a fan of the texture of the prawn meat. I don’t know if it’s the way they cooked it or what, but it had like mashed potato texture. Fourth was the white salmon. That was pretty good. My bf loves salmon so it was a hit. Fifth was the 3 mini pecan tarts. Because they were so little though, you get more crust instead of filling and I thought it was just too much crust, but that’s probably my own preference. The sauces and berries that are served with it are a much needed compliment to a more dry dessert. I’d love to see them come up with a nice citrus ice cream or something for dessert. Service. They were very prompt at refilling water, getting your order down, and bringing out the plates. The orders come out perfectly timed, so you don’t have to wait too long after you finish one to get the next one. Atmosphere & location. Located right next to Welfresh, it used to be the old Classic bakery. Feel free to park in the ‘classic bakery’ marked parking spots. They did a great job making it look nice inside. It is small though with 7 tables and the bar area.

Presentation was excellent. I almost didn’t want to mess up how beautiful the dishes were by eating them. The food was as excellent as the presentation, I am a huge foodie and I actually prefer this place over Uchi! I will be back, I need to try the rest of the menu. My dad(who is a big sushi snob and also liked the crudo dishes) had the yellowtail, the Hawaiian pomfret, and I had the baby cucumber salad, lobster bisque, and the ceviche. I loved that the snapper was the chip for the dish. The only thing I would change would be the location — please come closer to Houston proper!

We weren’t very impressed. I probably only liked 3 out of the 6 dishes we ordered. I would much prefer Kuu or Uchi over Preview. I’ve ranked them in order of my favorite to least favorite dishes. 1) lobster bisque — delicious, wish there was more broth 2) edamame — this was a hit, super buttery 3) sea scallops — cooked well 4) salmon — nothing special, bland 5) KFT — tasted like chicken katsu but with tuna 6) Japanese yellow tail — least favorite dish For the money spent I was expecting a lot more. Only plus is that it was BYOB so we saved lots of money bringing in our own sake and beer.

Now you don’t have to go far to have upscale seafood dining. Let me say this now, like most upscale places in and around Houston, the portion sizes are VERYSMALL compared to any Texas standards. That being said, the flavors, textures, quality of the food was really good. Located in «Chinatown» of Sugar Land, you would never have known this restaurant serves up delicate upscale seafood. we my family arrived, we had the tasting menu($ 55 per person) that consisted of 5 courses. Since I am sure these 5 coursers change all of the time I won’t go into what I had but all of the dishes were cooked very well and were very fresh. I think the dishes were kind of expensive for what you got as well but not terribly priced either. We got to chat with the chef/owner about the dishes and he admitted that they were still working the kinks out of the tasting menu because the dessert was kind of an after thought to the whole meal(still pretty good but you could definitely tell it wasn’t up to par with the rest of the dishes). Since this restaurant is still in its infancy I can definitely see a LOT of potential for this restaurant. So if you have a date night and don’t want to drive into the city this is a great place to go visit!

I have to say that if there were half stars, I would have probably gone with 4.5. It’s new, it’s good, it’s memorable and every new restaurant can make room for improvement, but I’m sure it will be five stars soon enuf, so why not! First of all, it would be nice if this restaurant was«closer». But plenty of people seem to like Killen’s and that’s in BFE.(Personally, I don’t think that drive is worth it [to Killens] but to each his own :). I would classify this restaurant as a very contemporary seafood restaurant. Most would compare it to Kata, UCHI and now KUU. I would tend to agree, but hate the comparison. Especially because this is not a sushi house. DISHREVIEWS… Canadian Lobster Bisque w Miso – They boasted that this was called out for one of the top ten dishes in Houston right now. Rightfully so. This was a robust bisque with a unique approach to presenting the lobster. They’re lobster nuggets of deliciousness. This I would have ordered two of. Ceviche Chips and Dip – We did order two of these and that was after we tasted the first one! The ceviche was bright w the right amount of acidity. Fresh scallops. These hot«chips» made out of thinly sliced snapper?! Genius. Seared Hokkaido Sea Scallops – Well seared. YUMMY sweet potato gnocchi. I don’t even like SP. I really liked this dish. Like really liked. New England Salmon w Squid Ink Ravioli – Hmm I’m on the fence. The other patrons thought the pasta was«tough». I didn’t have that problem. I liked the ravioli. I liked the crunchy mushroom garnish. I was on the fence about the salmon inside. I don’t know if it melded well. Maybe crab would be better, but maybe the Chef would consider that too easy: P Japanese Yellowtail Crudo – Nice intro to the restaurant. It was light and new. Blueberry gastrique. Candied Garlic. Lime zest. All worked. Those were definitely the highlights. The KFT was just ok. Edamame had a little too much butter for my taste. West Coast Sea Urchin(two ways). I didn’t eat it bc my friends love urchin more than me :) The restaurant was quaint(see: small) but cute and well adorned. I say if you’re willing to drive to Pearland for meh steak you can definitely make your way to this Sugarland gem. You will enjoy it. P. S. Enjoy now while there’s no cork fee and it’s BYOB. Our bill for 13 dishes, including starter and one dessert was only $ 45 pp with tip.

Preview is a brand new seafood restaurant that needs some love to stay open. We learned of its opening through . It’s not sushi or just a fish restaurant. The modern take on fish is working off the same thought process that Uchi is. If you like Uchi or places like Kata Robata as other reviews have pointed out you’ll love this place. The biggest problem for them is the location. It’s in a normal shopping plaza off Highway-6. If this was downtown you would have a hard time getting a seat. I would agree that for the portion size the prices may be $ 2-$ 4+ per plate to much in some cases; however take into account that the fish that you are eating is being brought in from around the world. That little extra is not cheap. We ordered literally everything on the menu but 6 dishes, including two off menu items. In all for a party of four the bill was only $ 175. This is on par with Uchi for the portion sizes. The service was great, however i would expect it to be since the place was empty. I hope that positive reviews and word of mouth keep this place alive as its real gem for the area… The food, ambiance, service were worth the price. Tell your friends as this place is too good not keep around. Note: The original post states this is dressy attire. There is no dress code speaking with the restaurant. As long as you don’t look like you’re headed to the beach anything is find. Someone in my party wore shorts and decent shirt and was fine.

One of the best things about this restaurant is the variety of seafood you get to try. Jason, the executive chef, orders seafood from all over the world and creates amazing dishes from them. The menu selection changes and rotates so that you aren’t limited to the same items every time you come in. I love the smaller sharing plate concept because it lets you try different items on the menu without having to be stuck with one thing. We ordered 8 different dishes, 9 total, and were very impressed by the quality, freshness, and inventiveness. RESERVATIONS: The seating capacity is 36 so it’s best to make a reservation if you want to guarantee yourself a spot. SPACE/AMBIANCE: We were immediately greeted at the door by one of the waitstaff, told him we had a reservation and were seated right away. The space itself is very cozy, modern, and has romantic mood lighting. The walls are covered with dark wood planks and modern tiles. I like the size of this place because it feels very intimate and would make a great date spot or just socializing with friends. There is a long bar where you can sit at to see all the magic happen. There are also a few booths and tables for parties of 2, 4, 6(at the bar) and 8. COLDPLATES Hamachi Crudo: I loved everything about this dish. Thick cuts of fresh hamachi and the candied garlic was unexpectedly one of my favorite things on the plate. New Zealand Ora King Salmon: I’ve never had this type of salmon before and it was beautiful and delicious. You could definitely taste the apple in the emulation and edamame in the purée. Ceviche Chips N’ Dip: This is one of my favorites. The snapper is beaten thin to be made into a crispy chip. The tuna ceviche and scallops paired very well with it. Uni: This is my other favorite from the cold plates. The uni was amazing and the salmon roe had a nice sweetness to it. We ordered 2 of these because it was that good. HOTPLATES «KFT» Kentucky Fried Tuna: Amazing tuna that I think had little bits of shredded coconut on the crust. I really liked the coconut crème and peaches with this. Lobster Bisque with Miso: Lobster nuggets were really good, miso was flavorful and we loved dipping our bread in it. Seared Sea Scallops: The sea scallops were so good paired with the candied bacon and truffle oil. DESSERT «Chocolate — Ripped» Strawberries: Huge strawberries covered in chocolate ganache that went really well with the mint sauce. It was a nice way to end the meal. COST: There were 4 in my group and with tax and tip, it came out to about $ 38/person for 9 dishes.
