For what you pay for, you get your money’s worth. Best part is the variety of shakes. Burgers are paper thin and not that great, fries are thin and the seasoning options are nice. Over all, if you want a treat on the cheap Steak n’ Shake is your place. Service is hit or miss. Personally I do not like getting my bill when my food is delivered and some of the servers don’t bother to check on you, so like many other places it depends on who your server is. But for a cheap lunch date with the kids after school it can’t be beat.

Go in with a low bar and you’ll leave happy. A plethora of options at $ 4 and a lot of various milkshake options. I love their chili. I don’t think I have ever been there and not gotten their chili. The staff is friendly and the food comes out rather quick. The only downside is that they give you your check shortly after you receive your food. Yes this is good in that you can leave whenever you wish, but sometimes this means that you won’t see your server after that point. On a recent visit, I did have to ask someone else to receive a refill. But oh well. Not the end of the world. You get what you pay for. At Steak ‘n Shake, if you go in not expecting a fine dining experience, you will leave happy.

We always enjoy coming here and the service is good. The fries are excellent, as are the shakes. The burgers are definitely better than other fast food joints, but not my favorite in the world.

I love the variety of shakes! fast food prices for dining in experience. Although, I am a bit confused how the drive through works since dining it it takes a while for the food to come just like a regular restaurant. Either way though the food is good!

Burger? Yes! Shakes? Yes! Cheap? Heck Yes! Love this place! Came here a few days ago with with my family. The burgers are great! A little small, but burgers and fries for less than $ 4? Now that’s a deal. Not the mention, their shakes. They have so much shakes to choose from for cheap prices in large sizes. Is this better than Mcdonald? Yup. Anytime, anyday. I would definitely be back. But, wished they had more of this kind of business where I live, not when, where I have to drive four hours to visit my family just to come here.

Just moved here and was super excited to see there was a Steak ‘n Shake nearby. It’s good and cheap. Not a gourmet meal by any means, but satisfying. This time I had the chicken fingers and fries(only $ 4!!) and my husband had the frisco melt. Both were really good along with the Heath and Oreo shakes we ordered. Would definitely be coming back and would recommend to anyone. It’s an old school burger and shake joint that won’t disappoint and is easy on the wallet.

Wait… I’m not sure why there are so many bad reviews about this place. I was first introduced to Steak ‘n Shake in Richmond when i went to college, and I instantly fell in love. The burgers are so big and juicy, and not to mention CHEAP. A big meal like that on a college girl budget its anything I can get behind. I love love love the fries, especially when they’re piping hot! I know others who hate the fries, but still very confused about that. Like what’s not to like about fried potato goodness? My go-to is the Wisconsin Buttery, which I think is doused in butter, so that’s probably why I like it so much… there’s also onions on it, so like hoooowwwww bad is it for me? haha I usually go to threw the drive thru which is kind of on the slow side, but I don’t mind waiting because that’s just the kind of person I am, but I can see how that would be a problem for others. The inside is a full service restaurant, and the waiters are very nice and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. I’m obsessed.

Omg so mad I typed a long review & it didn’t post. Overall, very disappointing staff and food. Customer service is horrible they make you wait, Hygiene isn’t something important either bc silverware and all dishes are very dirty. Residue on forks and cups, I’m not dining in anymore. I recommend getting a milkshake and leaving through the drive thru

Okay I guess. Someone once raved about them so I thought I was in for something ridiculous. Not the case. It’s like a Highway 55… Diner-like set up inside. Old, retro feel. Old-school music playing. Things are ridiculously cheap. There are a ton of items under $ 4 which is unheard of these days. I ordered their double cheeseburger with Cajun sprinkled on the fries along with a cookies and cream shake. I saw a table nearby get their food and it looked unappetizing. My meal came out looking better but it tasted like I ordered something from Wendy’s. That’s not a bad thing. My expectation was much higher My milkshake was okay… Not good enough to bring all the boys to the yard. I work out so much because I want to eat like a fat kid but when I do I want it to be epic. Meh… More like 2.5 stars.

Love Steak ‘N Shake!!! I was so disappointed when I moved to Virginia from Atlanta many years ago to find no Steak N Shake. I actually cried when I drove through my old haunts in Atlanta on a trip from Virginia to Mississippi & passed my favorite Steak N Shake. How many people have cried over a fast food restaurant? There is still no Steak N Shake in Bayside. Why? Are the fast food gods in the sky not smiling on me? Have I frequented too many upscale restaurants & incurred their wrath? This is not a review of the General Booth location. It is far off my normal path. It is a review of the king of fast foods — Steak N Shake! May they thrive, prosper & open a location in Bayside.

I think I’ve found a favorite comfort food spot. You have $ 4 burgers and shakes so good that you want to slap yourself. Let me explain. Our server was awesome. She was friendly, offered to tweak our orders to our liking, and took care of us. That’s what you want from a server — excellent service. I ordered the jerk burger. It was meaty, smoky, spicy, and peppery. That’s want you want from a jerk — attitude. The fries were crispy but too little of it. It should have been an endless mound of ooh-la-la. The others in my group ordered the regular burgers. That’s because they’re boring. Okay they’re not… but really, they are. At the end of the meal, we had shakes. I had the Nutella shake, because… NUTELLA! But here is where our server Ashley showed her super power of excellent service — She suggested putting salted caramel pretzel pieces in it. Whaaaaaaaat? I almost actually slapped someone. I had to make people have a moment of silence while I spooned pure hazelnut happiness into my mouth. That’s want you want from a shake — silence and happiness. So you guys need to come here — except on Sunday afternoons. That’s my time. ALL. MINE.

I hate giving places negative reviews even though I liked the food, but this is one place I have to. Now, I do understand this place is popular, but still, far from what I should expect. I went in on a typical Saturday(I’ve been to this Steak n Shake before and it was great) and it was around 2pm(my companion and I couldn’t decide on lunch close by, so we decided to drive 25 – 30 mins to grab a bite). I’ll admit, as soon as we parked we could easily tell it was packed. Now, even though it was packed, we decided«well, hell, it’s a good burger and cheap, so let’s dive in». Honestly, I wish we turned around. So, we got to the hostess, and there was probably 5 or 6 families waiting for tables. It was just two of us, so we decided to sit at the counter. So we sat, and about 2 minutes later, we received menus. However, it took us about 20 minutes until we ordered as the waitress was occupied. I ordered the Bacon and Cheese Double Steakburger, double fries, and a cherry Coke, while my companion ordered the Royale Cheeseburger, fries, and a cherry Coke. This is something that should take at the absolute most 20 minutes, right? Wrong. Took over 75 minutes for us to get food. They must’ve had over 100 burgers on the griddle during the period I was there. Yeah, the food was good. My companion never had a fried egg on a burger, but loved it. My burger was great. Fries, ehh(a little too hard, maybe sat a little too long). But that’s not the issue. It took 75 minutes for 2 burgers. Ridiculous. Will I be back? Maybe. On a Saturday? Probably not.

If you are a big time meat lovah this place is for you. It is kind of like a modern version of an old time classic diner. I really wanted a mint chocolate chip Oreo milkshake, but at almost $ 4 I hesitantly decided against it. I settled on a root beer float. I considered a steak hot dog because I was curious how they would compare to 5 Guys or a Nathan’s Frank. There’s a good chance these dogs could be great… if they are feel free to tell me. I went meatless that day and just got a large order of onion rings. I was unfortunately very disappointed. I did not expect gourmet, but I’d hoped I would like them a little. What I can tell you is that I had very positive interactions with 4 staff members, including the manager. I was impressed with the staff’s responsiveness, and great attitudes. It is nice when the staff don’t seem miserable at work and they are pleased to serve you. Read our fellow Unilocaler’s reviews if you want to know more about great meal options.

Arriving a bit after the lunch rush should have been over, I was brought to a table which was wiped down by the hostess and then dried while I sat there. The waitress came over a few minutes later and took my drink order. When she returned with my sweet tea, I ordered the Guacamole Steakburger with regular fries. And then… a long wait. I get that they make the burgers to order but it seemed like they didn’t even start my cooking until I placed the order. You’d think they would have some that had already started cooking? A good seven or eight minutes and then the burger arrived. Very tasty with big flavor and a small scoop of guac on top. This was an excellent burger, especially for«fast food.» No shake today. I figured a double cheeseburger with fries was enough of a risk to a coronary, thanks. Very inexpensive. I look forward to the«newness» of this place wearing off. The parking lot was nearly full!

So first off, I was super excited to hear that Steak ‘n Shake was coming to Virginia Beach. I was in Ohio when I went to my first one and got a phone call the same day from a friend that there was one coming to VA Beach. Having had a great experience at the one in Ohio, I decided to give this one a chance. And I am sooooo glad I did! I’ve been to the drive-thru a few times and got delicious food(we don’t ever talk about the red velvet cake milkshake, though… that was a mistake), but I decided to sit down for once. My mother wanted a Frisco Melt because she’d been craving one for the longest time, but her eye caught the all-you-can-eat pancakes sign on the window and that was it. It’s been busy every time I’ve been there except for this time. It was literally me, my mother, and another table. So yea, you can go to Steak ‘n Shake and not feel crowded(if you don’t mind going on a Wednesday morning). I ordered the Chicken California Skillet with a biscuit on the side($ 5.99) and my mother had the AYCE pancakes for $ 3.99 and a cup of hot tea($ 1). The skillet looked smaller than I thought it would be, but it filled me up quickly. It was so tasty and the hashbrowns at the bottom were criiiiipsy. Crispy, crispy, crispy. My mother enjoyed her pancakes, too, but she could barely get through hers. I had a bite and they were buttery, hot, had a little crunch on the outside. Nice and fluffy on the inside. My biscuit was a little on the underdone side, but it was still really good. The staff was friendly and everyone was very attentive. Our server was always checking on us and made our experience great. I don’t know if the other man walking around was the general manager or the shift manager, but he asked us how we were doing. A bus of people came in as we were leaving and he helped the host set up tables for them. You know? Just doing things he ought to be doing, but with a smile on his face(which is a huge change from what I’m used to). Anyway, we’ll definitely go back. :D

After a few visits under my belt it’s time to weigh in on one of my favorite burger joints. I have anticipated Steak n’ Shake moving in our area for years, so I was thrilled when the first one in HR opened in Newport News. Well if you read that review it was not pretty and left a lot of room for improvement. Although this location has a lot more going for it there still can be improvement. The parking lot is not adequate when they are packed out. Making it worse the drive thru-line curling around a blocking your exit, or entrance. The entry road is in very poor condition, as a matter of fact my last visit I had to dodge a huge pot hole. No noticeable issues with debris that I encountered on any visit. A couple of my early visit at the bar were within two months of opening and it was a total mob scene. Those early visits were weaker than I would have liked on the service end, but the burgers and shakes held up to my satisfaction and my son’s. My last visit was a full service set down at a booth meal with my son after school around 3PM. I was glad to see things had finally died down and parking was a breeze. We entered and was quickly seated by the hostess. Our waitress came over and was friendly and got orders in quickly. All good and satisfied with the start of the service. A survey of the dining room had a few tables that needed cleared, but they were being worked on within minutes. Some debris was around the floor the main travel areas of the restaurant. The dining room was less than half full. Shakes came out first which was a very nice plus and appreciated. Meals came out within 15 – 20 minutes, not a problem with that timetable. Two double cheeseburgers with fries were delivered by our waitress. Order were correct and food was hot and yum! The waitress was upbeat and friendly the whole time. Some may criticize the fact the burgers are so thin, but this is a trademark of the franchise. The buns were nicely toasted and fries nice and crisp. All washed down with a delish shake and life is good. We also hit it at the right time during the Happy Hour shakes for half price. So we enjoyed our meal and I needed a water refill and some extra napkins, but our waitress never returned. Probably 20 min, or so went by and she could not be flagged down, I never saw her. Meals completely finished and were really good. Our waitress show up as shakes were just being dusted off and apologizes that she could not get back and was tied up. At that point we just asked for a bill so we could leave. Really hard to excuse no follow up visit when they are not packed, but I can’t say how many tables our waitress had. I think on the three to four visits I have utilized the restroom facilities and found them spacious with the proper supplies for washing hands etc. I try to include this any any review where I do use the restrooms because I think it does say something about the business. In this case they get a passing grade. I am still a fan and will return. This Steak n’ Shake is superior to our other HR location in Newport News any day, but work still needs to be done. I am at a 3.5 rounding down. They are too inconsistent for me at this point and I hope to upgrade in the near future.

I was so glad that a Steak N Shake opened up in Virginia Beach! It stinks it’s so far from where I live, but it was worth the drive! We had a group of 10 people, so we had to wait a little bit for a table. It wasn’t so bad because we were still waiting on people to arrive. There were 2 girls that were sitting at a table in the area that our group was going to be seated and didn’t seem like they were going to leave for a while, so the waitresses kindly moved them to a booth so we could sit down. Our waitress was amazing! She took our orders and put them in right away. We ended up getting our burgers before our shakes, but that was okay. There was no way I could finish a shake by myself, so I shared a Very Berry shake. It was delicious and made with real strawberries. The waitress specified that the strawberry shake was made with a syrup. My cousin and I split two burgers, the grilled portobello and Swiss steakburger and the All-American melt. Both were delicious! I really like every style of fries they had, especially the Cajun seasoning. I can’t wait to go back, this place is delicious!
