Absolutely the place we always stop when passing through town. Chopped beef sandwich is the best. Add a side of beans and I’m in BBQ haven. No frills but a must try experience.

Tried this place for the first time today. Ordered a combo meat sandwich with sliced beef, sausage, and ham. With a side of coleslaw and a large sweet tea. The sandwich was good but nothing exceptional. Tea was very good. The coleslaw was disappointing. All of that for $ 9 and some change seems a bit high. Doubt I’ll be back again.

Saw BBQ while coming out of the gym so we had to stop. Brisket was dry and did not have a smoke ring whatsoever. Ribs were big but chewy. Jalapeño sausage was the best thing there. Potato salad was standard and so was the cole slaw. Tyler’s is way better.

Stopped in tonight … The cashier kid was super friendly! I appreciated him asking if I wanted the sauce on it, the side, or both! The potato salad was great… because there was no celery or onion! Thank you, Doug’s! I was surprised to see that it came with pinto beans… rather than baked! But just as tasty! Not really a coleslaw fan… it seemed it was lacking something though… I had the chopped beef bbq… it was good, not fantastic… But next time I pass through town I will likely try it again… maybe trying something different… I didn’t think Doug’s knocked it out of the park… BUT I also didn’t think it was bad. Thank you for a filling supper!

Use to come in here all the time when I lived in Amarillo. I have not been able to find a good BBQ place in San Antonio. The Frito pies are the best I ever had and the combo sandwich are also great. The BBQ sauce is so good and the key to good BBQ in my opinion. If the sauce sucks the what’s the point. That seems to my problem when looking for a BBQ joint in San Antonio, the sauce suck. If you looking for good BBQ then stop here.

Since we moved away we miss Doug’s Hickory Pit Bar-B-Q so much. We sometimes even drive four hours just for the great chili. I’ve tried to copy the recipe but I don’t have that wonderful smoked brisket to put in it so it’s just not the same. Love that you can run to Doug’s and grab a some brisket by the pound and a big cup of sauce. sigh gotta go I’m feelin faint just thinking about it.

I guess I can understand the nostalgic sentiments expressed by some of the rave reviewers, but the offerings here are mediocre. The people are friendly and the place is homey but, guess what sentimental folks, this isn’t the best bbq in Texas, Amarillo, or even this part of town. The ribs are chewy, and not flavorful. Same for the brisket. I EXPECT great brisket in Texas, and was disappointed by Doug’s. The sauce is weak, which can be a good thing with great bbq, but just compounds the mediocrity here. Saving grace? The brown beans are great! If you are a bbq fiend, come here and get beans to go.

It might be nestled in a little corner and hard to find on a busy street, but the food is well worth it. My boyfriend introduced me to it just like his mom introduced his dad! I know that one day we will be bringing our kids.

This place is a Mecca for me. Born and raised in Amarillo, this was my first barbecue. Living away, still make the pilgrimage when I return. Chopped beef sandwich, pint of beans. Always perfect. Key is to ask for a side of their sauce. That way you can dip or drench the sandwich and experience the full spice and warmth. Wife was sacred by the building the first time, so you know it’s going to be good. She came around.

One word: nom. We were making good time back to Denver from Austin when we saw an advertisement on the side of the road for this place… and it looked like our favorite kind of place. Small, local, divey… and delicious. A quick exit off the road and we were in lunchtime heaven. As soon as we parked, opened the door and inhaled the rich, deep, smoky scent we knew we stumbled onto a gem. Super nice people and great food.

I have been eating here since a kid! My dad introduced me to Doug’s. I have moved away from Amarillo, but I sure can’t find BBQ like this anymore.

I’ve been going to Doug’s BBQ ever since my dad could drag me in the door. I recommend the chopped beef sandwich with the sauce(sauce is the key) and the slow cooked beans. It is a small restaurant with limited seating and small window unit air conditioners(I usually take mine to go). But they take a credit card for those of us who don’t know what cash is!

Hands down the worst bbq I’ve ever had. If this is the best of Amarillo I suggest you move… anywhere. Bland tasteless chopped beef, I’ve had better microwaved at convenience stores, hell I’ve had better at McDonald’s with their McRib and that’s f-ing gross. The sandwiches came on hamburger buns and were only edible after loading them up with pickles and Doug’s poor attempt at bbq sauce… and the hickory pit flavoring? Absent. Maybe they missed their hickory shipment for the week. Beans tasted like they were right out of a can, cold slaw was just wrong and the sausage, did they raid a going-out-of-business Hickory Farms and load up on the summer sausage? The only thing Doug’s has going for it is the ample parking and the employees were nice.

I had thought that Texas was a magical culinary state, where every town was brimming with good barbeque, and so long as you picked someplace dirty and genuine, you were in for a treat. Apparently not. At Doug’s I got bland, gristly, ribs that were unpleasant to eat on top of «chopped beef» that was bland and mushy. These treats were served in combination with a scoop of thickened mayonnaise purporting to be potato salad, a little serving of mayonnaisey cole slaw, and an uncooked hamburger bun purporting to be «Texas Toast.» We also got a half-slice of Frito pie, which was more of the bland beef, plus some moderately peppery pinto beans, on top of Fritos and topped with shredded cheddar cheese. It’s not Doug’s fault that Fritos are kind of disgusting(and far inferior to a tortilla chip) but it is his fault that the beans were too sweet and the beef was bland. The cheese was pretty good, although I suspect it comes shredded out of a bag. Despite all of this, I am glad we stopped here. The friendly, helpful, cashier who rang up my order asked me if I’d ever spent time in Amarillo before. I said that I had not. «Don’t stay long now,» he said. I looked at him alarm. «Dallas is a nice place,» he explained, «but you’re in the panhandle of Texas. You’re liable to end up in a Deliverance-type situation.» We left Amarillo and did not stop until reaching the border.

Staple of Amarillo. This place has been here since, well, since well before my conception. Small hole in the wall behind the old blockbuster. That’s how you know it’s good, it’s small ass place in a small ass TEXAS down. I’ve been going here since I was just a tiny TEXAN. The chopped beef sammys are the best I’ve ever had. I prefer mine with extra sauce, but that’s just me. The pretty sure that the ribs are the same that Ron Burgandy got stuck in his teeth. This place is old school, and in a good way. They know all the regulars by name, and they sell glass bottle Coca-Colas, like the ones you grew up with. I can’t tell you enough how good this place is and when I come to bless this town with my presence, which is typically once a year, I can’t get enough of this place. Now how player is that mayne? I pity the fool that be slipping on this…

I know the food is served from a red mobile home abandoned in the Blockbuster parking lot, but the chopped beef and brisket sandwiches here are the best I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot of BBQ in my day. This is a must stop for anyone in Amarillo looking for good BBQ at reasonable prices. I practically lived off of their menu when I was in high school.

This is an awesome Texas BBQ joint. The combo sandwich was great.
