We have had dinner here twice, and the food is superb. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone dining in Durango, it is well worth it. Also, the Hotel is top notch!

My son, daughter-law, granddaughter, sister and I had breakfast Sunday morning. There were only a few people there at 10am. The service was excellent, food was good. The only complaint was there was no place to change Sydney’s diaper. I’m sure it is difficult to find room when the building is as old as the Strater is, but something should be done. It won’t discourage us from returning as everything else was great.

So I spent three nights at the Strater Hotel at the end of November. My birthday was on the 25th and the next day was Thanksgiving. I was really looking forward to the Thanksgiving buffet in the restaurant. On my birthday I ate at the Mahogany Grille and had a fabulous Rib Eye meal and some great wine. This meal was a 5 and the staff was incredible and kept bragging about the Thanksgiving buffet. So I arrive about 6:45pm for my awesome Thanksgiving buffet. I had the same waiter, ordered some killer wine then went to the buffet, only to find out they had already run out of turkey and dressing, WHAT, by 6:45pm! I was told the other two places in the hotel that serve food let the patrons partake in the buffet. This is insane! I saw so many families who had reservations, like me, be very disappointed. So many dishes were already gone. At least I got some prime rib and a little bit of fish, but was really bummed out. How can you run out of turkey and dressing for those that had reservations for a great Thanksgiving dinner? I loved the hotel and restaurant, but felt slighted by what happened. I put off writing this for months now but felt I needed to write this and get it off my back. I would tell anyone on planning a Thanksgiving meal here to avoid this restaurant at all costs!

So many eateries in Durango; so this was my first time in MG(!) The seating is lush; the ambiance is lovely. The recommended wine was excellent(red zin Lodi, Cali); the bread w/both oil ‘n balsamic and olive tapenade were great — the entré, notsomuch:/ I ordered the special marlin w/pineapple salsa, jasmine rice, zucchini and red pep… I have cooked all these at home and ALL were Much better from my kitchen – fish was overcooked+dry and not even warm temp(!) every food on plate was practically tasteless – And the price was OVERTHIRTYDOLLARS! Both servers recommended this entré; as they had enjoyed it themselves… perhaps fish was prepared properly for them, perhaps the college age servers were hungry and/or inexperienced cooks/foodies. It would have to close-to-perfect if I were to so enthusiastically recommend an entré – and even if fish were flaky and hot from kitchen — it truly had no taste – the two diners I was with tried it and concluded same. I would go back for a glass of wine and maybe an appetizer; but never for an expensive disappointment dinner again. (the other meals were so-so; and if I knew how to give a Unilocal 2.5 stars to MahoganyGrill I would!) (Sorry MG, I don’t like to complain; but you should know and it was a special evening for us; so was a bigger letdown than just a night out)

Stay away from this place. They are greedy. The quality is better at McDonalds. Such a rip off. We went on NYE for $ 55 a person they served hashbrowns, a rib of lettuce, and rubber chicken.

So. I registered just to provide a review for this place. What a disappointing experience. It is very obvious the restaurant operates as a two star restaurant with four star prices. Ignoring the chaos in the dining room at the time we were seated, I still had issue with the delayed service. We ordered our drinks and waited over 20 minutes to be served(for the 4 of us). Meanwhile our salads had already arrived. Then when ordering dessert, we had to bus our own table and beg that they take the plates. After that, dessert arrived and we ate it and then coffee arrived after. It makes no sense. Well, if you factor in that this is a ski town, then maybe this is acceptable, but I guarantee this poor service would not fly elsewhere when charging these prices. So disappointed. I should add that the food was fine. Elk steak was on par with the $ 39 price tag(though incorrectly advertised as $ 36 on the website). Although the waitress was not able to make our table side bananas foster actually catch fire, and therefore it was a bit flat and boring for a dessert.

Excellent service and good food. My wife got the pepper steak Herbert and aside from it being partially overcooked it was very good. I had the trout special, which was excellent. The waitstaff checked on us several times and offered additional drinks and dessert.

Great food! Bacon wrap shrimp as an appetizer is a great way to start dinner. I ordered the flat iron Oscar. Amazing! Definitely recommend.

Service was excellent, but a little bit overpriced. My husband and I got the steak special but it was a little fatty and not very tender. If I’m going to pay $ 36+ for a steak, I would expect a little more. Nice staff though.

What a wonderful classy place. We had the prime rib and it was the best I have ever had, cooked perfectly along with the mash potatoes. The mushroom soup of the day with home make and excellent. For dessert we had banana foster that was prepared at our table and was quite the show. Something everyone should experience at least once. I highly recommend this establishment as their food is of the highest quality and the staff is friendly and very kind and accommodating.

Service and food were excellent. We had the flatiron steaks and cooked to order. Wine list is somewhat limited.

I thought this place was good but not great. The service was good. I was just not wowed by the menu. For the prices I expect a tiny bit more creativity. The desert choices were not interesting either. But overall if you want a decent meal with a little above average service go here. The building is neat and the décor is very Victorian. I don’t have a complaint and I do think it is better than other places on that street. I would like to give 3.5 stars but can’t.

There is nothing about this restaurant that isn’t top-notch — our server Nolan was attentive but didn’t hover, the presentation beautiful, and the elk was outstanding. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone desiring a special evening complete with great ambience.

Appetizers were pretty bad… bruschetta was cold and shrimp seemed like they were bought from Walmart. Steak entrees were phenomenal though! Probably will go back one day.

We had a party of 12 and the service was slow and often the waiter seemed to be absent. We had mixed feelings about the food. The steak entrée and the salmon tamale were excellent while the brisket was fatty and chicken over done. Likewise the Raspberry salad was a winner while the Caesar salad was one of worst we have been served. It is a beautiful dining space but the kitchen is uneven. Not worth the price.

Good and staff did a great job. The girlfriend and I both had steaks and they were cooked correctly. We had a chocolate desert that was just delicious. A little pricey but worth it.

For the price, the food was just okay. It wasn’t outstanding like it was last time we were here. We had fond memories and were expecting better. Bummer.

Unique atmosphere with interesting décor. We ordered Cannonball wine which was good. For dinner I ordered the peppered steak Herbert which was good. My boyfriend ordered the special which was a steak with some sort of fig sauce. He enjoyed it a lot. For dessert we ordered bananas fosters which was so amazing. They prepare it for you right in front of your table. This was the best part of the night. Service was mediocre– could’ve been better especially since this is a pricier place.

One word, disappointing. The food was mediocre bordering on bad, yet price point was high. I hate that. I don’t mind paying for quality, so it is not a matter of being cheap. If you charge on average $ 30 per entrée, those entrées better be good. Some things that I did like: good service and historic décor. But since I was hungry and expecting a restaurant(not museum), that just doesn’t cut it. Avoid.
