We went back for my Birthday and it turned out to be a big disappointment. The food was mediocre, the service was mediocre at best. My filet was overlooked and the quality was not aged prime. No one asks if we were happy with our food. The salmon was oily and had a thick awful dark underside that should have been cut off in the kitchen. No cracked pepper was offered. The worst error was that the desert that was prearranged with the waitress by my wife prior to being seated was forgotten so I never got the desert with a candle! The waitress when asked about this omission when we were departing, she said«I forgot, do you want it in a bag to take home?» How inadequate, no apology. No offer to make us happy by reseating us and serving the desert. My wife was quite upset. So was I. Very disappointed. Not the restaurant it used to be.

Elegant dining room, excellent service, very good food. Vegetarian has mushroom ravioli, root beer short ribs. Very tasty fru-fru mixed drink. Had to change our reservation a number of times, and they were very accommodating.

I had roasted pear salad — incredible! The scallops appetizer was one of the best! The prime rib was out of this world! My brother had the scallop and lobster pie another home run.

Service is great – they always remember our names. I drink tons of water and I never have to ask for more, which is unusual. And the food is good and great value. We will be back soon.

Canfield House was a nice stop for us on our East Coast Trip after visiting the Newport Mansions. The dining room is a large Victorian Style dining room that has the same feel(albeit dated) as the dining rooms in the mansions(but not nearly as fancy). The service is very friendly and welcoming, which is especially important for me while I am playing tourist. They also were very accommodating to our 13 person group. Overall the food was pretty good, especially for the price. They have a killer deal that is 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for $ 35 per couple!(note: the bottle is a cheap bottle approx worth $ 4-$ 10, but was surprisingly good!). I ordered a grilled prime rib and my girlfriend ordered mushroom ravioli and we were both happy with our dishes. We also ordered the French onion soup as an appetizer and it was delicious. We love French Onion Soup and order it whenever we can, and we particularly enjoyed this one because it wasn’t too salty like most usually are. Overall, if you are in the area, I would recommend eating here. You definitely can’t beat the price!

We arrived at the Canfield House at 6:00 pm on a week night in late May and was promptly seated. The room was old style, plenty roomy, and the noise level was low. We ordered off the $ 35 for two dinners and a bottle of wine menu. The bread was crisp and good. We both ordered salads for $ 4 extra. No dressing choice was offered, they came with Russian. I ordered the grilled chicken, which was excellent. The other meal was a prime rib special, it looked like it was briefly grilled, very tasty. We both also ordered desserts, a little pricey at $ 9 each, but again very good. So our $ 35 meal cost $ 80 with tax and tip. There was only one waitress for the entire room, at least 8 tables, yet it was not a problem. She did a great job and never kept us waiting.

My husband and I came here last week while in town, and enjoyed the two for $ 35 dinner and wine special. I was very happy with Pan Fried Tilapia, accompanied with a lovely rice pilaf. My husband enjoyed his steak frites, and the fries were very nice. We shared a chocolate dessert that was very good. The white wine that came with the meal was very good, especially with the chocolate sauce and whipped cream that it came with, and I would be happy to have it again. We did have our 8 month old baby with us(we confirmed while making reservations that they would be able to accommodate for this). She slept for most of our meal, and I suspect that some of the patrons weren’t even aware that she was in the room. We’ve been here before(after Thanksgiving a few years back), and they do a beautiful job decorating for the holidays. Overall a very nice meal, and we hope to be back again!

The lobster macaroni and cheese takes your tastebuds to a decadent heavenly place! Omg I I just can’t rave enough! The bacon wrapped scallops are perfect too… The cheese crumbles are the magic touch! A true gem of a bed and breakfast and a Resteraunt! The staff are absolutely wonderful! As gordon lynch would say«absolutely a five star experience’ ! And gordon Ramsey would have given kudos for the five star dining experience! You know it’s good when you just can’t stop eating it! Mmmmm!!!

After touring the Newport mansions, this place was perfect, because it has a large formal wood paneled dining room. The warm bread they serve tastes like it was just baked and just came out of the oven. I had the luscious lobster/scallop pie. If you go Tues-Thurs, there’s a great deal: dinner for 2 from a set menu, which didn’t include the lobster/scallop pie, and a bottle of wine for $ 35! I went at Christmas time, and the huge tree is really festive.

An excellent place for lunch in Newport. This is tucked away from the main part of town, so you won’t be jockeying with tourists for a table. The restaurant so nicely keeps with the traditional feel for the area and really nicely set up. The staff was so welcoming and attentive without being overbearing. It really made the experience that much better. The food was outstanding! I absolutely recommend going for the specials if you can.

Ate there last night, fairly good food, service good, $ 34 special two-fer with bottle of wine Tuesday thru Thursdays. Quite noisy with one table of rowdy people. Interesting place, but just ok. Not sure I will go back.

Man, you can get a blazin’ good deal here for 2, Tuesday through Thursday: dinner with wine for only $ 35! On a recent Thursday night the restaurant was pretty packed. Despite being crowded, we were waited on in a timely manner. I thought the food was a good value. The portions were fairly sizable. I’m not sure if the full price entrees are particularly worth it. The options are fairly generic. Definitely would recommend the Canfield House for inexpensive weeknight dining.

Service was exceptional as was the food & the manager certainly was paying attention to the service being provided without being intrusive. The Seafood Alfredo was one of the best seafood dishes I have ever had. Best of all is that you can have a conversation in a normal tone of voice without competing with a loud sound system. This place is definitely worth a second visit!

The restaurant’s building is a beautiful ol’ casino that is well maintained on the inside. We chose to sit on a large, partially enclosed porch, where there is a bar and some tables. It was just a very nice place to sit on a cool breezy evening. People watchers especially will enjoy this area. The tables are nicely spaced and there is unobtrusive live music playing in the background. The service was very attentive and really perfect in terms of pace. We were not in a hurry and our server was content to let us take our time. It was nice to find a place that was not at all concerned about table turn over. There were four of us. We shared two appetizers, the stuffed clams and the bacon wrapped scallops. Both were delicious. The clams were absolutely fantastic. For entrees we selected the rib-eye, the lobster pie, the short ribs and the seafood Alfredo. All of them were so good that we passed them around for tasting. I think the number one choice was the lobster pie and I regret passing it up. But I would pick any one of the four choices again. The wine list is excellent and the prices are reasonable. All in all, we enjoyed a really nice, relaxing dinner. Everything — food, service and ambiance — was just fine. Go here. You won’t be disappointed.

Upon entering Canfield House, the first thing you’ll notice are the colorful remnants of its former life as a Gilded Age casino – complete with a large and colorful game wheel at the entrance to the dining room. The space is a throwback to yesteryear. With its heavy drapery and ornate wallpaper, the interior of the restaurant, much like its nearby neighbor The Chanler, will transport you back to a time when folks actually lived in those big old mansions around the corner on Bellevue Avenue. Four of us made reservations toward the end of the night here, following a cocktail party down the street at Forty 1 North. By the time we arrived, the place was less than half full, but the wait staff was still lively, friendly and responsive. I ordered the Seafood Alfredo: packed full of native lobster, scallops and shrimp and tossed in a parmesan cream sauce with caramelized onion and sundried tomatoes over linguine. It was decadent, delicious and hearty on a cold and snowy winter night. After dinner, our server sidled up to the table with one of those absolutely evil dessert trays — you know the ones — featuring teasers of all their lovely sweet selections. I swear, restaurants must shellac the most beautiful pieces when they emerge from the oven so as to make them look like sugar-soaked perfection all day and night. It was not a sound judgment call, but I gave in to temptation and ordered some rich, chocolately, and wholly unnecessary concoction. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the clientele does skew older; but I don’t have a problem with that. Everyone deserves to have a nice meal out once in a while, and to be completely honest, I’d rather a well mannered elderly couple sitting at the next table than a bunch of idiots in their twenties, blowing half their week’s allowance on shots. It’s no longer a gambling establishment, and the place itself is not a gamble, either. I personally prefer being as close to the waterfront as possible when I’m in Newport, but when the weather is less than lovely, this is a great choice.

A former acquaintance of mine who has a wife with some very particular dietary requirements once told me to steer clear of this place. Since I had almost painful experiences dealing with him and her in regards to setting up event menus, I decided that we should try this place, mainly out of spite(and also because the other reviews seemed to be generally favorable). The perfect opportunity for us to try it out was the last Newport Restaurant Week(sometime last fall). The place does look very nice, in a big old Victorian with lots of wood trim, etc. But, once one looks closer, the shine seems to come off a bit from the expected fancy-schmancy experience. One, the place seems a bit worn(old carpeting, faded wallpaper, etc), which I guess could be expected from an old house. Second, the waitstaff was dressed in polo shirts and khakis, something I would expect at a more casual, family, maybe chain-type like Chili’s restaurant. Perhaps they’re not going for high-end dining, because when I think of elegant, high-end dining, I think of staff at least wearing dress/button-down shirts, perhaps even with a tie, not business casual attire. We noticed a lot of the older set here as well, so maybe they cater more to that crowd. As for the food, we went with the RW menu, so we weren’t able to sample most of the main menu. And since we dined there a few months ago, I don’t even recall what we had, which I guess says something. I do remember thinking the food was good-not-great, but not bad at all. Since it was RW, the prices were reasonable. From looking at the main menu, it looks like the prices are fair even when it’s not RW. The service was fine, not over the top awesome, but not lacking in really any way. Overall, it was an okay experience. Would we go back? I don’t think we’d go out of our way, but if we found ourselves in the neighborhood and needing a place for dinner, we would consider going back.
