Had never been here before… will NEVER go back. Group of 8 went in tonight… we were seated upstairs(which was no problem). The Waitress was MUCH more interested in being a comedienne than in making sure our orders were correct …3 out of 6 got our orders in a timely fashion…(2 had drinks only) 3 were told their orders had be messed up by the kitchen. 20 minutes later 2 more orders came out …3rd was STILL missing(my wife’s) waitress tried to retake order but we’d already been there over 45 minutes so she told them to forget it. Waitress Never came back up stairs… another table of 8 had to get their own menus…& finally left after we told them our story. We had to go down and get our own tickets… never got so much as an I’m sorry… we screwed up from the waitress or the management. They did deduct my wife’s salad & our 2 soft drinks. Food that we did get was OK at best … nothing more… needless to say… no tips were received from our table tonight . Would not recommend this place at all except for maybe drinks only!

My wife and love spending time in Newport every chance we get. We do love to try a lot of different restaurants, but this place, has to be the worst that we have come across. We stumbled across this place while with our family on a slightly rainy night a day before Valentine’s Day. Originally we were headed for the Chowder bowl, but they were packed. We all were hungry and the kids really wanted to get out of the rain and the cold. The food was very sub-par. They were just getting ready to get into the dinner service when we came in, so we all just ordered some appetizers until they were ready. The oysters, not very fresh, the hot wings, very tiny but good flavor, the fries good and those were the best parts, the reason for the 2 stars. I could write a short book on what we tried, but all I can really say is, avoid at all cost unless you are looking for a dive bar, maybe things are better after you get a few drinks down you.

Perfect bar and great steamed Oysters. If you are lucky you can share a cracker with the Famous ‘Henry”

The clam chowder was very good, lots of clams and No potatoes! The prime rib special was not real tender but the flavor was good. Dinner and drinks for 2 was under$ 40, worth it for the entertainment value of the waitress tossing clams and French fries to the seagull on the roof outside the window!

We loved it. Sit on the second floor and enjoy the view. Best restaurant on our vacation !! !

Plain uneventful seafood. So disappointed. Clam chowder was very plain and very few clams. I’m pretty sure they lie about the halibut and chips. It seemed like it was frozen from Cisco.

This is a dive bar, so don’t expect fancy, but expect fast and friendly service and good food! Our waitress was super friendly and kind. The chowder and salad and bread were good! Fish and chips is golden, crispy and great!

It IS a dive Bar, and that’s precisely what makes it so great! You get that«local flavor» as I call it. The owner thought I was a Rockstar and my friend were my «entourage» and security. I’ll take that! How can a place like this be bad?! Tip: try the oyster shooters.

Definitely a dive bar… you have to go through the bar and up some stairs to get to the restaurant. When we got up there, there was only one table occupied, while the place next door(Chowder Bowl I think) was packed and had a wait. After placing our order and getting the food I see why. Portions were small, while the price wasn’t. Sampler platter literally had 2 of each item. No silverware was brought, no napkins were given… hell, the waitress didn’t even stay upstairs in the restaurant area. Never again! I should’ve waited for the place next door.

Best steamer clams EVER! Best people! Best place! We discovered this little local bar/restaurant during our stay in Newport. It’s located in Nye Beach, which is a very short walk, either on the beach or on Elizabeth Street headed north from any of the ocean hotels in Newport that are located on the north side of the Yaquina bay bridge.(We were at The Hallmark, and it was less than a mile — about a 10 minute walk.) There is a bar and small restaurant area with a pool table on the lower level, and a dining area upstairs. Out of the six days that we were in Newport, we were here five… either just for drinks or for drinks and appys… more specifically… the AMAZING steamed clams! We did venture out and order a few other things from their happy hour menu… calamari, crab cakes, clam chowder… none of which was anything spectacular. But the steamer clams are just absolutely amazing! We have had clams at many, many places on the west coast, and we have never had clams this good. They bring them in from Washington, and keep them alive in a large salt-water tank. They steam them in wine, butter and garlic. For those looking for an uppity, elegant dining experience… you will want to skip The Sandbar. For those looking for a totally chill place to meet some really nice people and have a few drinks, you can’t miss this place! I have read some pretty negative reviews of The Sandbar, and it’s really disappointing. This is a bar… not a 5 star restaurant, so comparing it as so, in my opinion, is not reasonable. This is a place you can go to unwind, have a few drinks, make friends with the bartender(Lindsey… you’re the best and we can’t wait to come back to see ya!) ANDDDDD have the best clams ever! We are already plotting on how we can get back here, even if it’s just for a few days. Yes… the clams and the company were that good!

Tried tonight for the first time because Chowder place next door was packed. Next time I will wait for Chowder Bowl. This place is disgusting. We walked through mold smelling bar up stairs to the«restaurant». I think the waitress was drunk. She plopped down and sat at table to take order. Never took drink order. While she was downstairs we poured our own water after half hour of waiting. Then decided not to drink because of filthy glasses! When she came back up i asked if we could get drinks. After about an hour food came. Steaks were Cold. Seafood fettuccine was like soup. She said condiments are over there behind counter because that’s how we do it get it yourself. Ketchup for bland steak was there next to vacuum. She disappeared for long periods. This young couple walked in with kids. Waitress said just so you know there will be a long long wait. Bar is packed. I gave them notion to run! They left I gave them thumbs up. 15 minutes later walking through stinky bar I noticed those 3 tables that made kitchen busy! Waitress just wanted to be in bar I suppose! I’m not impressed. Quite disgusted. This place is filthy. I wouldn’t even look in kitchen as we left. Scared what i would see. Will never eat there again. Shame on us for not just leaving! My dad wasn’t in the mood to get back up! Warning to all… wait in line next door!

Sooooo, had the ahi sushimi, amazing, little dry but nothing to write home about, and lady had the onion rings let’s say Applebee’s has better rings. The ones here were very mushy on the inside texture kind of kept us from finishing them, now to the burgers we were both turned off by the appearance of the place kind of dirty run down local bar type and we had our 9 month old, so we had bad thoughts coming in, plus the waitress smelled like she was smashed drunk but she was nice, any who back to the burgers, we both had Paul burgers, eh fries, not great super salty but I like them that way, and the meat on the burger, fricken fantastic! Burgers were amazing among everything else screaming no don’t come back, I totally would for a good Burger!

I understand the Seafood and Wine festival brings a lot of business during the one weekend of the year, but that doesn’t mean everyone working in your bar needs to be so rude… Very local only feel. Wait staff was grumpy and extremely slow. Bathrooms were so filthy I choose not to eat there for fear of the kitchens cleanliness. I actually had the luck of winning $ 100 on video poker, but when I went to cash out, after waiting for more than 10 min, was advised by the bartender they couldn’t help me because lotto came after they served everyone with drink or food orders. Was told I might as well come back at 9 in the morning when they opened to cash out. Showed up at 9 only to find out they didn’t even open tell 10. I would love to support local business in town while visiting, but I will never spend a dime here again.

I am from Newport, OR originally and I love this place. Great view, great food and good service. If you are in Newport don’t pass this place up. Location is good, too; easy access to the beach for a sunset stroll after dinner.

The only reason I rated this 2 stars is the owner was standing out front of the bar saving a place to park for her husband or boyfriend. I would have thought that customers come first, apparently not at Bonny and Pauls Sandbar. The bartender Shaun is doing a great job, we are in the bar as I am writing this review. We have not got our food yet so if it is bad I will write again. If you come here and see a lady with dark hair, smoking and standing in a parking spot tell her customers come first.

Found this place while strolling along the beach. Our server, Terri, was very pleasant and attentive. We had a great view of the ocean. The steamers, salad and wine were wonderful. The locals were gracious with sharing the pool table. Dinner(scallops and steak) left a lot to be desired. My roommate left his card at the bar, and we went to retrieve it the next morning. We got there 5 minutes before opening. The door was open, and a woman who seemed to match the description of the owner in previous posts was standing right there at the bar refused to give us the card until the place was«open».
