Tara’s Tipperary Tavern is my favorite small pub in RI. Authentic Irish pub, live music every week(Hughie and Ger are my favorite), considerate staff. If you are on the southern side of RI; want to go someplace to have a drink alone, bring a date, or just grab some dinner this is the place to go.

1) the name is now Tara’s Tipperary Tavern. This name is worth one point alone. 2) Irish coffee. Award winning Irish coffee. 3) Tara herself came over to talk to us about the latter. She is a great hostess. 4) there is great line up of specials, activities & food all week long, year round, for the locals And the visitors. Everything from football to trivia to Santa for the kiddos. 5) multi level back deck right on there beach. You will not find«new American cuisine«or «craft cocktails.» You will find a real pub, full of real folks, having a real good time.

I love this place and think everyone should go to it since it is so precariously set close to the ocean, you never know how long it will be with us. I love the Thursday open mic nights. I’ve had their chowder and thought it was too salty, but someone else would probably think the chowders I like are too bland. Warning: Some people comment on the nice rooftop deck, but when I was there this past summer, it was roped off for repairs. It takes a beating. Unlike some other comments made, I have only met nice people at the bar and have shared tables with friendly strangers. Some are tourists(like me) some are locals… some stay at the nearby mobile home park and some come in from all over to participate in the open mic nights. I once heard a very talented opera major from a CT college, although that is not likely to be on your evening’s repertoire. If you don’t like the crowd or the music being performed at the time, then walk up the back stairs and look at the ocean. If you can’t appreciate the sight of the pounding waves at night, then you probably shouldn’t be in South County anyway. Long live Tara’s Joyce Family Pub!

A great summer stumble-upon with their rooftop open air deck and some talented live music… was pleasantly surprised by the updated menu(pub food, plus some local seafood but they did a great job with it — I’ve had worse at twice the price from so-called upscale restaurants Sure, the downstairs remains the basic bar it always has been, back from when it was just«the Joyce» — and yes there’s a lot of locals drinking in the downstairs bar… but get off your high horse people! Strike up a conversation with those so-called«toothless hillbillies»(they’re not) and you’ll find that most a damn good people! This is definately under-rated… I was going to go to the Ocean Mist with very limited deck seating and then heard live music from up above at Tara’s and was nicely suprised by a great view, friendly attentive service, friendly patrons, and good food and drink. This will be a preferred summer hang out for me in the future! Bravo Tara and the Joyce Family!

My boyfriend and I were on vacation and during our trip to beach decided to stop in for lunch. It was great! The tuna melt with fries was awesome and you HAVE to try their homemade pub chips. The beer battered mozzarella sticks were amazing and my boyfriend said his ruben was the best he’s ever had! The atmosphere was really cool and you could tell it was a real local — everyone knows everyone — kinda place! We thought it was awesome!

This review is my first in years which speaks for itself. This is a 5 star review for what the type of establishment in review. Great view on the new deck, good food, and even better people. The Mist is a classic but if you have been there more than a few times and have not checked out Tara’s you are missing out. They are also a more family friendly option.

Went for breakfast on the deck today, beautiful view, pleasant waitress and horrendous food. I had eggs Benedict: the hash browns had no good taste and were very undercooked, the English muffin was grilled on one side and chewy and cold on the other, ham was low quality, holland aide sauce was watery and lacked flavor, coffee tasted like it was made with dishwater. Beer was good though.

Wow, I just read review about this place saying that the patrons don’t have teeth and that the bar is full of hillbillies. I’ve been going to this place for 15 years and I have never seen it so she must be going to Tara’s on Halloween. I love turd reviewers that goto dive bars and expect posh Miami clubs. What do people expect??? Please go back to Applebee’s and stay away from a classic dive bar. We’ll on the bar front, Tara’s is a classic Irish Pub owned by people from Ireland. My advice would be to goto Tara’s on a Sunday during the summer. Great weather, live music, and a friendly atmosphere. Thanks

Cheap booze, guitar player, local old drunks at the bar, greasy food. I’ll be back!

Joyce’s is the worst pub I’ve ever set foot in. Went there once a few years back – most people had no teeth, no shoes but there were overalls… ok fine, nbd– i can get down with that. Time #2: douchey door boy of approx 16 years old thought we were too intoxicated to come in – god forbid being light hearted and laughing is not allowed in sober activities. I walked in anyway and told the bartender that he was hurting their crappy business and she said«well he’s a pretty good judge of character» which is odd for a bar that has no character… Anywho, never go there. That place sucks, go to Ocean Mist instead.

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Have been once before, it’s a total dive with meh service, but served as an ok breather from the Ocean Mist. It seems their bro-dude bouncer now believes he is guarding the gates at a posh NYC nightclub. I had one beer next door, the DJ was not working(the official statement was a blown fuse), so figured I would opt for the quieter night, Bro says to our group of 4(all over 21, all dressed appropriately. nobody with more than 2 beers in their belly) «Yea, I’m done for the night, you can’t come in. Next?» and proceeds to let the people behind us in. No rhyme or reason. Honestly, the selection and service suck, but to get snobby on top of it? I will never go back again,

A dive by the ocean Tara’s Joyce Family Pub has been around for a long time. Most of the locals usually just call it The Joyce but it had other names in the past. Since it is literally right on the ocean it has managed to survive several large hurricanes and all sorts of other natural disasters and rumor has it that it was one of the most famous speak easies during prohibition. Definitely a place with some history. The actually bar area hasn’t changed much during the 25 or so years I have been coming here. It still always very dark, very dank, very cluttered, and very messy. I swear the same pictures and signs are still on the walls from decades ago and the same wet spots are still on the floor in the exact same places. Hopefully the wet spots are water, perhaps beer, or just maybe something a bit less appetizing. Going down into this pub leaves absolutely no doubt that you are in a different sort of a place. Sure it’s a dive and if it didn’t happen to be right next to the ocean it would look even crummier but it’s a very special place. You might tend to stick to the floor, stools, walls or anyone you bump in to but in this place you just don’t mind. The doors are usually open so you always get the smell of salt air and a cool sea breeze. The chairs and stools look like they are about to fall apart and you can just imagine the history that each one would tell if they could speak. Tara’s is a Irish Pub and has great Irish food and great Irish music. Some famous artists and people have crowded into this strange place to entertain and mingle. Of course it has changed a bit over the years and now has a fantastic and airy deck that gives great views of the ocean. A great place to climb up and enjoy some great food or drink and see the sea but I still prefer the ancient underground cavern. That’s where the history is and that’s where you find the friendliest bar tenders and the most interesting people to talk to. Assuming you can find some one still sober enough to be coherent you can always get some great old stories in this place. The great new deck gives it a different feel but the old ambiance still is present down below. This is a wet, messy, crowded and decidedly different type of bar. An anachronism that refuses to change with the times. A great place that has salt air, beautiful views, cool food, some wonderful music, fascinating people and history that just that drips off the walls.
